Contact area of rough spheres: Large scale simulations and simple scaling laws
We use molecular simulations to study the nonadhesive and adhesive
atomic-scale contact of rough spheres with radii ranging from nanometers to
micrometers over more than ten orders of magnitude in applied normal load. At
the lowest loads, the interfacial mechanics is governed by the contact
mechanics of the first asperity that touches. The dependence of contact area on
normal force becomes linear at intermediate loads and crosses over to Hertzian
at the largest loads. By combining theories for the limiting cases of nominally
flat rough surfaces and smooth spheres, we provide parameter-free analytical
expressions for contact area over the whole range of loads. Our results
establish a range of validity for common approximations that neglect curvature
or roughness in modeling objects on scales from atomic force microscope tips to

Anticoagulation: a practical guide for strabismus surgeons.
An increasing number of surgical strabismus patients are taking oral anticoagulant and antiplatelet agents, with more diverse mechanisms of action than those used in the past. The decision as to whether to continue these drugs throughout the perioperative period is difficult and must be based on the balance between hemorrhagic and thrombotic risk. To help guide strabismus surgeons with clinical management in these cases, we review potential hemorrhagic complications of strabismus surgery and examine the use of anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs during the perioperative period. Surgical strategies that might help minimize intraoperative hemorrhage in patients on anticoagulant therapy are also discussed
Contact of Single Asperities with Varying Adhesion: Comparing Continuum Mechanics to Atomistic Simulations
Atomistic simulations are used to test the equations of continuum contact
mechanics in nanometer scale contacts. Nominally spherical tips, made by
bending crystals or cutting crystalline or amorphous solids, are pressed into a
flat, elastic substrate. The normal displacement, contact radius, stress
distribution, friction and lateral stiffness are examined as a function of load
and adhesion. The atomic scale roughness present on any tip made of discrete
atoms is shown to have profound effects on the results. Contact areas, local
stresses, and the work of adhesion change by factors of two to four, and the
friction and lateral stiffness vary by orders of magnitude. The microscopic
factors responsible for these changes are discussed. The results are also used
to test methods for analyzing experimental data with continuum theory to
determine information, such as contact area, that can not be measured directly
in nanometer scale contacts. Even when the data appear to be fit by continuum
theory, extracted quantities can differ substantially from their true values
Fcc-bcc transition for Yukawa interactions determined by applied strain deformation
Calculations of the work required to transform between bcc and fcc phases
yield a high-precision bcc-fcc transition line for monodisperse point Yukawa
(screened-Couloumb) systems. Our results agree qualitatively but not
quantitatively with previously published simulations and phenomenological
criteria for the bcc-fcc transition. In particular, the bcc-fcc-fluid triple

Yield conditions for deformation of amorphous polymer glasses
Shear yielding of glassy polymers is usually described in terms of the
pressure-dependent Tresca or von Mises yield criteria. We test these criteria
against molecular dynamics simulations of deformation in amorphous polymer
glasses under triaxial loading conditions that are difficult to realize in
experiments. Difficulties and ambiguities in extending several standard
definitions of the yield point to triaxial loads are described. Two
definitions, the maximum and offset octahedral stresses, are then used to
evaluate the yield stress for a wide range of model parameters. In all cases,
the onset of shear is consistent with the pressure-modified von Mises
criterion, and the pressure coefficient is nearly independent of many
parameters. Under triaxial tensile loading, the mode of failure changes to

Shear yielding of amorphous glassy solids: Effect of temperature and strain rate
We study shear yielding and steady state flow of glassy materials with
molecular dynamics simulations of two standard models: amorphous polymers and
bidisperse Lennard-Jones glasses. For a fixed strain rate, the maximum shear
yield stress and the steady state flow stress in simple shear both drop
linearly with increasing temperature. The dependence on strain rate can be
described by a either a logarithm or a power-law added to a constant. In marked
contrast to predictions of traditional thermal activation models, the rate
dependence is nearly independent of temperature. The relation to more recent
models of plastic deformation and glassy rheology is discussed, and the
dynamics of particles and stress in small regions is examined in light of these
findings
The continuous performance test (rCPT) for mice: a novel operant touchscreen test of attentional function.
RATIONALE: Continuous performance tests (CPTs) are widely used to assess attentional processes in a variety of disorders including Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia. Common human CPTs require discrimination of sequentially presented, visually patterned 'target' and 'non-target' stimuli at a single location. OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to evaluate the performance of three popular mouse strains on a novel rodent touchscreen test (rCPT) designed to be analogous to common human CPT variants and to investigate the effects of donepezil, a cholinesterase inhibitor and putative cognitive enhancer. METHODS: C57BL/6J, DBA/2J and CD1 mice (n = 15-16/strain) were trained to baseline performance using four rCPT training stages. Then, probe tests assessed the effects of parameter changes on task performance: stimulus size, duration, contrast, probability, inter-trial interval or inclusion of flanker distractors. rCPT performance was also evaluated following acute administration of donepezil (0-3 mg/kg, i.p.). RESULTS: C57BL/6J and DBA/2J mice showed similar acquisition rates and final baseline performance following rCPT training. On probe tests, rCPT performance of both strains was sensitive to alteration of visual and/or attentional demands (stimulus size, duration, contrast, rate, flanker distraction). Relative to C57BL/6J, DBA/2J mice exhibited (1) decreasing sensitivity (d') across the 45-min session, (2) reduced performance on probes where the appearance of stimuli or adjacent areas were changed (size, contrast, flanking distractors) and (3) larger dose- and stimulus duration-dependent changes in performance following donepezil administration. In contrast, CD1 mice failed to acquire rCPT (stage 3) and pairwise visual discrimination tasks. CONCLUSIONS: rCPT is a potentially useful translational tool for assessing attention in mice and for detecting the effects of nootropic drugs.Funding for this research was provided by Professor Mark Johnson, Imperial College London. Serum methylarginines and spirometry-measured lung function in older adults
Rationale: Methylarginines are endogenous nitric oxide synthase inhibitors that have been implicated in animal models of lung disease but have not previously been examined for their association with spirometric measures of lung function in humans.
Objectives: This study measured serum concentrations of asymmetric and symmetric dimethylarginine in a representative sample of older community-dwelling adults and determined their association with spirometric lung function measures.
Methods: Data on clinical, lifestyle, and demographic characteristics, methylated arginines, and L-arginine (measured using LC-MS/MS) were collected from a population-based sample of older Australian adults from the Hunter Community Study.
The five key lung function measures included as outcomes were Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second, Forced Vital Capacity, Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second to Forced Vital Capacity ratio, Percent Predicted Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second, and Percent Predicted Forced Vital Capacity.
Measurements and Main Results: In adjusted analyses there were statistically significant independent associations between a) higher asymmetric dimethylarginine, lower Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second and lower Forced Vital Capacity; and b) lower L-arginine/asymmetric dimethylarginine ratio, lower Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second, lower Percent Predicted Forced Expiratory Volume in 1 second and lower Percent Predicted Forced Vital Capacity. By contrast, no significant associations were observed between symmetric dimethylarginine and lung function.
Conclusions: After adjusting for clinical, demographic, biochemical, and pharmacological confounders, higher serum asymmetric dimethylarginine was independently associated with a reduction in key measures of lung function. Further research is needed to determine if methylarginines predict the decline in lung function
Bulk and Interfacial Shear Thinning of Immiscible Polymers
Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the shear
thinning behavior of immiscible symmetric polymer blends. The phase separated
polymers are subjected to a simple shear flow imposed by moving a wall parallel
to the fluid-fluid interface. The viscosity begins to shear thin at much lower
rates in the bulk than at the interface. The entire shear rate dependence of
the interfacial viscosity is consistent with a shorter effective chain length
that also describes the width of the interface. This is independent
of chain length and is a function only of the degree of immiscibility of
the two polymers. Changes in polymer conformation are studied as a function of
position and shear rate.Shear thinning correlates more closely with a decrease
in the component of the radius of gyration along the velocity gradient than
with elongation along the flow. At the interface, this contraction of chains is
independent of and consistent with the bulk behavior for chains of length
. The distribution of conformational changes along chains is also studied.
