    Bystander intervention among secondary school pupils: testing an augmented Prototype Willingness Model

    This study augmented the Prototype Willingness Model (PWM) to assess reactive and deliberative decision-making underpinning bystander intervention in gender-based violence contexts. There were 2079 participants (50% male, 49% female, 1% unreported), aged 11-15-years-old (M = 12.32, SD = 0.91), attending 19 secondary schools across Scotland. Participants self-reported the augmented PWM variables, then their intervention behaviour approximately one month later. Path analyses mostly supported the predicted relationships between positive and negative bidimensional attitudes, subjective norms, prototype perceptions, perceived behavioural control, and self-efficacy on intentions and willingness. Willingness predicted positive (speaking with a teacher) and negative (doing nothing) intervention in less serious violence. Self-efficacy predicted negative intervention in more serious violence. Subjective norms positively moderated the attitudes-intentions relationship. Overall, the results suggested that reactive (willingness) more so than deliberative (intention) decision-making account for intervention when young people witness gender-based violence. Additionally, the findings highlight the complexity of bystander intervention decision-making, where adding control perceptions, bidimensional attitudes, and moderators have independent contributions. Furthermore, self-comparison to the typical bystander who positively intervenes (prototype perceptions) was the strongest predictor of intentions and willingness, highlighting in a novel way the importance of image, and group membership on decision-making

    Fire and ecosystem change in the Arctic across the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum

    Fire has been an important component of ecosystems on a range of spatial and temporal scales. Fire can affect vegetation distribution, the carbon cycle, and climate. The relationship between climate and fire is complex, in large part because of a key role of vegetation type. Here, we evaluate regional scale fireā€“climate relationships during a past global warming event, the Paleoceneā€“Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), in order to understand how vegetation influenced the links between climate and fire occurrence in the Arctic region. To document concurrent changes in climate, vegetation, and fire occurrence, we evaluated biomarkers, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), terpenoids, and alkanes, from the PETM interval at a marine depositional site (IODP site 302, the Lomonosov Ridge) in the Arctic Ocean. Biomarker, fossil, and isotope evidence from site 302 indicates that terrestrial vegetation changed during the PETM. The abundance of the C29n-alkanes, pollen, and the ratio of leaf-wax n-alkanes relative to diterpenoids all indicate that proportional contributions from angiosperm vegetation increased relative to that from gymnosperms. These changes accompanied increased moisture transport to the Arctic and higher temperatures, as recorded by previously published proxy records. We find that PAH abundances were elevated relative to total plant biomarkers throughout the PETM, and suggest that fire occurrence increased relative to plant productivity. The fact that fire frequency or prevalence may have increased during wetter Arctic conditions suggests that changes in fire occurrence were not a simple function of aridity, as is commonly conceived. Instead, we suggest that the climate-driven ecological shift to angiosperm-dominated vegetation was what led to increased fire occurrence. Potential increases in terrestrial plant biomass that arose from warm, wet, and high CO2 conditions were possibly attenuated by biomass burning associated with compositional changes in the plant community

    Drought, agricultural adaptation, and sociopolitical collapse in the Maya Lowlands

    Paleoclimate records indicate a series of severe droughts was associated with societal collapse of the Classic Maya during the Terminal Classic period (āˆ¼800ā€“950 C.E.). Evidence for drought largely derives from the drier, less populated northern Maya Lowlands but does not explain more pronounced and earlier societal disruption in the relatively humid southern Maya Lowlands. Here we apply hydrogen and carbon isotope compositions of plant wax lipids in two lake sediment cores to assess changes in water availability and land use in both the northern and southern Maya lowlands. We show that relatively more intense drying occurred in the southern lowlands than in the northern lowlands during the Terminal Classic period, consistent with earlier and more persistent societal decline in the south. Our results also indicate a period of substantial drying in the southern Maya Lowlands from āˆ¼200 C.E. to 500 C.E., during the Terminal Preclassic and Early Classic periods. Plant wax carbon isotope records indicate a decline in C_4 plants in both lake catchments during the Early Classic period, interpreted to reflect a shift from extensive agriculture to intensive, water-conservative maize cultivation that was motivated by a drying climate. Our results imply that agricultural adaptations developed in response to earlier droughts were initially successful, but failed under the more severe droughts of the Terminal Classic period

    Left ventricular systolic and diastolic dysfunction after infusion of tumor necrosis factor-alpha in conscious dogs

    We used a load-insensitive index of systolic left ventricular (LV) function and an analysis of diastolic pressure-dimension relationships to test the hypothesis that recombinant human (rh) tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF alpha) impairs LV function in dogs. Animals were studied 7-10 d after aseptic implantation of instrumentation to monitor cardiac output, external anterior-posterior LV diameter, and LV and pleural pressures. Data were analyzed from seven dogs that received active rhTNF alpha (100 micrograms/kg over 60 min) and from five dogs that received heat-inactivated rhTNF alpha. At 24 h after infusion of active rhTNF alpha, the slope of the LV end-diastolic dimension-stroke work relationship decreased significantly, indicating a decrement in LV systolic contractility. Simultaneously, LV unstressed dimension increased significantly, suggesting diastolic myocardial creep. The end-diastolic relationship between LV transmural pressure and normalized LV dimension (strain) was markedly displaced to the left, suggesting increased diastolic elastic stiffness. Despite these changes in LV performance, cardiac index was maintained by tachycardia. The abnormalities in LV function were resolved by 72 h. We conclude that rhTNF alpha reversibly impairs LV systolic and diastolic function in unanesthetized dogs. Because dysfunction occurs greater than 6 h after the infusion of rhTNF alpha and persists for 24-48 h, the mechanism underlying this phenomenon may involve secondary mediators or a change in myocardial gene expression

    Measuring implicit bi-dimensional attitudes and predicting speeding behaviour

    Attitudes are bi-dimensional predictors of behaviour, meaning that attitudes comprise separate positive and negative dimensions, which both predict behaviour independently (Elliott et al., 2015). Furthermore, the positive dimension of attitude is the stronger predictor for risky behaviours (e.g., speeding). This implies that evaluative beliefs about positive behavioural consequences strongly influence subsequent behavioural performance. Beliefs about negative behavioural consequences do not. In previous research, bi-dimensional attitudes have been measured using questionnaires, which tap explicit cognitive judgements. However, implicit cognitive processes are likely to dictate the performance of habitual behaviours such as speeding. We therefore measured bi-dimensional attitudes using an implicit association test (IAT). The presentation will cover the development of the IAT and the results from regression modelling, in which test performance was used to predict speeding behaviour. The implications for better understanding the cognitive processes that dictate behavioural performance and how to change behaviour will be discussed

    An Alu-derived intronic splicing enhancer facilitates intronic processing and modulates aberrant splicing in ATM

    We have previously reported a natural GTAA deletion within an intronic splicing processing element (ISPE) of the ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM) gene that disrupts a non-canonical U1 snRNP interaction and activates the excision of the upstream portion of the intron. The resulting pre-mRNA splicing intermediate is then processed to a cryptic exon, whose aberrant inclusion in the final mRNA is responsible for ataxia telangiectasia. We show here that the last 40 bases of a downstream intronic antisense Alu repeat are required for the activation of the cryptic exon by the ISPE deletion. Evaluation of the pre-mRNA splicing intermediate by a hybrid minigene assay indicates that the identified intronic splicing enhancer represents a novel class of enhancers that facilitates processing of splicing intermediates possibly by recruiting U1 snRNP to defective donor sites. In the absence of this element, the splicing intermediate accumulates and is not further processed to generate the cryptic exon. Our results indicate that Alu-derived sequences can provide intronic splicing regulatory elements that facilitate pre-mRNA processing and potentially affect the severity of disease-causing splicing mutations

    Predicting Survival in Patients Receiving Continuous Flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices The HeartMate II Risk Score

    ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to derive and validate a model to predict survival in candidates for HeartMate II (HMII) (Thoratec, Pleasanton, California) left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support.BackgroundLVAD mortality risk prediction is important for candidate selection and communicating expectations to patients and clinicians. With the evolution of LVAD support, prior risk prediction models have become less valid.MethodsPatients enrolled into the HMII bridge to transplantation and destination therapy trials (N = 1,122) were randomly divided into derivation (DC) (n = 583) and validation cohorts (VC) (n = 539). Pre-operative candidate predictors of 90-day mortality were examined in the DC with logistic regression, from which the HMII Risk Score (HMRS) was derived. The HMRS was then applied to the VC.ResultsThere were 149 (13%) deaths within 90 days. In the DC, mortality (n = 80) was higher in older patients (odds ratio [OR]: 1.3, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.1 to 1.7 per 10 years), those with greater hypoalbuminemia (OR: 0.49, 95% CI: 0.31 to 0.76 per mg/dl of albumin), renal dysfunction (OR: 2.1, 95% CI: 1.4 to 3.2 per mg/dl creatinine), coagulopathy (OR: 3.1, 95% CI: 1.7 to 5.8 per international normalized ratio unit), and in those receiving LVAD support at less experienced centers (OR: 2.2, 95% CI: 1.2 to 4.4 for <15 trial patients). Mortality in the DC low, medium, and high HMRS groups was 4%, 16%, and 29%, respectively (p < 0.001). In the VC, corresponding mortality was 8%, 11%, and 25%, respectively (p < 0.001). HMRS discrimination was good (area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve: 0.71, 95% CI: 0.66 to 0.75).ConclusionsThe HMRS might be useful for mortality risk stratification in HMII candidates and may serve as an additional tool in the patient selection process

    The Detection and Characterization of cm Radio Continuum Emission from the Low-mass Protostar L1014-IRS

    Observations by the Cores to Disk Legacy Team with the Spitzer Space Telescope have identified a low luminosity, mid-infrared source within the dense core, Lynds 1014, which was previously thought to harbor no internal source. Followup near-infrared and submillimeter interferometric observations have confirmed the protostellar nature of this source by detecting scattered light from an outflow cavity and a weak molecular outflow. In this paper, we report the detection of cm continuum emission with the VLA. The emission is characterized by a quiescent, unresolved 90 uJy 6 cm source within 0.2" of the Spitzer source. The spectral index of the quiescent component is Ī±=0.37Ā±0.34\alpha = 0.37\pm 0.34 between 6 cm and 3.6 cm. A factor of two increase in 6 cm emission was detected during one epoch and circular polarization was marginally detected at the 5Ļƒ5\sigma level with Stokes {V/I} =48Ā±16= 48 \pm 16% . We have searched for 22 GHz H2O maser emission toward L1014-IRS, but no masers were detected during 7 epochs of observations between June 2004 and December 2006. L1014-IRS appears to be a low-mass, accreting protostar which exhibits cm emission from a thermal jet or a wind, with a variable non-thermal emission component. The quiescent cm radio emission is noticeably above the correlation of 3.6 cm and 6 cm luminosity versus bolometric luminosity, indicating more radio emission than expected. We characterize the cm continuum emission in terms of observations of other low-mass protostars, including updated correlations of centimeter continuum emission with bolometric luminosity and outflow force, and discuss the implications of recent larger distance estimates on the physical attributes of the protostar and dense molecular core.Comment: 14 pages.     Measuring explicit and implicit bi-dimensional attitudes to predict studying behaviour and outcome

    Attitudes have traditionally been measured as unitary constructs i.e. a person has a positive or a negative evaluation of a concept. However, Elliott et al., (2015) suggests that attitudes are better measured as having concurrent positive and negative dimensions which act as independent predictors of behaviour. In addition to these explicit measures of attitude, implicit measures also have been shown to be predictive of behaviour (see Greenwald & Banaji, 1995) but the relationship between bi-dimensional explicit and implicit measures has never been examined. This study measures bi-dimensional explicit attitudes via questionnaire and implicit bi-directional attitudes via a specially constructed Implicit Association Test and regression modelling examines the relationship between these, studying behaviour and exam performance in Higher Education students. Theoretical conclusions from these results and implications for real world behaviour change will be discussed
