Productivity growth in Norwegian ferry links 1988-1996, and implications for regulation
Procuramos numa primeira fase analisar o domĂnio senhorial numa vertente
Destacamos a Coutada

Lexicographic answering in travel choice: Insufficient scale extensions and steep indifference curves?
This study assesses lexicographic answering in stated choice surveys of travel alternatives. Respondents answering lexicographically in three different data sets are analysed in relation to how important they found the attributes that dominated their choices. Lexicographic answering is also regressed against covariates indicating commuting situation and socioeconomic status. A larger share of those answering lexicographically in relation to one specific attribute stated that this attribute was decisive in their choice compared to the share trading-off attribute levels in choices. Furthermore, a large majority of those answering lexicographically stated that the difference between the highest and lowest values of the attribute, according to which they chose lexicographically, was âvery importantâ. Relevant variables explained lexicographic answering in a logistic regression analysis, e.g. that the probability of lexicographic answering with respect to travel time increases with income and travel distance. Response strategies other than neo-classical trade-off, e.g. simplification with a focus on one attribute alone, cannot be ruled out. However, the results indicate that lexicographic answering is due primarily to steep indifference curves in combination with insufficient attribute scale extension. These findings have implications for choice design and for the treatment of respondents answering lexicographically

Competition and substitution between public transport modes
The management and understanding of modal split between public transport (PT) modes is of interest for numerous reasons. It may, for example, be desirable to stimulate passengers to switch from crowded buses and over to higher capacity rail. This requires a good understanding of drivers of transit modal substitution.
The evidence put forward in this paper is based on more than 150 empirically estimated cross elasticities between PT modes from over 20 sources collected from Australia, Europe and USA. These sources include scientifically published evidence as well as grey literature.
This evidence is coded into a database from which our paper presents and analyses the available cross-PT-modal demand relations. We focus on evidence for how fares, travel time and service intervals on PT âmode Aâ affect the demand for PT âmode Bâ.
Despite generally low levels of substitution between PT modes, passengers are particularly sensitive to in-vehicle, access/egress and waiting time in choosing PT mode and less so for fare variations. In general, rail demand is less sensitive to changes in bus than bus demand is to changes in rail. We also find that peak-hour demand more markedly switches between PT modes than off-peak demand does
Modal substitution in urban transport: a stated preference approach
Mode shift from car to public transport (PT) can be obtained by imposing restrictive policies on car use, or by improving PT. However, the state of knowledge of modal substitution is weak. This paper documents a preference survey of Norwegian urban dwellers who were asked to consider their mode choice for a reference trip in hypothetical scenarios where their current mode becomes less attractive or unavailable, or substitute modes improve. This allows for analysis of aspects that have rarely been studied before, like directional asymmetry, different mode choice impacts of different attributes (travel time, price etc), and the impacts of magnitude (or intensity) of the attribute change. The analysis focuses on diversion factors (δ), i.e. the proportion of the change in demand for one mode which diverts to another mode. We present empirical evidence of δ and show how it differs with different attributes, with size/intensity of attribute change, and, importantly, how it depends on whether the attribute change accrues to their current transport mode (stick) or to an alternative mode (carrot)
Revealed and stated preferences for reliable commuter rail in Norway
We study the effect of travel time reliability on passenger demand using a rich data set on period tickets and train delays over time for commuter trips in the Oslo capital region in Norway. We estimate the relationship between delays and demand using origin-destination fixed effects, which controls for any unobserved time-invariant heterogeneity across stations. The results show a negative effect of delays on demand, but smaller than the effect implied by stated preferences. As a possible explanation for this, we consider a reverse causal relationship, where high demand causes passenger crowding which again results in more delays. Splitting the sample into trips that start at crowded stations within the city-zone and trips that do not, we find evidence indicating that crowding is biasing the estimates towards zero
Investigating observed and unobserved variation in the probability of ânot travelâ as a behavioural response to restrictive policies
Besides technological improvements, restrictive car policies are likely to be the most effective measures for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from local passenger transport. Restrictive policies may lead some individuals to choose to not travel to otherwise useful or enjoyable activities. This paper therefore explores what factors drive the probability of ânot travelâ as a behavioural response to restrictive policies. Using stated choice data among car owners in the 10 largest cities in Norway, we investigate observed and unobserved taste variation for ânot travelâ given different (hypothetical) policies. The empirical evidence suggests that the likelihood of ânot travelâ (a) is lower for work-related trips; (b) is higher where respondents state they have no decent alternatives; (c) increases with trip distance; and (d) increases with the intensity of the policy. We perform Monte-Carlo simulations illustrating different predicted choice behaviour for car users and public transport users under different types of stylized policies (travel time changes versus travel cost changes).publishedVersio
