CERTIFICATION AND QUALITY SIGNALS IN THE AQUACULTURE SECTOR IN FRANCE
Regarding food-labeling programs, France created a set of official labels according to origin, superior quality, organic agriculture, or specific standards. While these labels have been widely used in the agri-food sector for many years, they have been applied only recently in the seafood sector, especially to farmed products. The economic importance of labeled aquaculture products is still limited, but developing. This paper will reflect on the use of labels for aquaculture products in the French seafood market and attempt to identify their effectiveness.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

Japanese Seafood Consumption: An Analysis of At-Home Consumption and General Trends
In the world, Japan has a special place in the fish consumption, as Japanese people are among the most important consumers of aquatic food products, and Japan ranks first as fish importer, for supplying about half of its market. Thus the changes in the Japanese seafood market are susceptible to have a considerable impact on fisheries and aquaculture sectors in numerous countries. Changes in fish consumption in Japan must be considered in the general context of deep changes which affected the Japanese food system, notably a diversification in the type of food consumed through internationalization, and more recently changes in the place and mode of consumption. Our aim is to identify the main changes in the seafood consumption in Japan over the last 10 years. We used the data issued from the Family Income and Expenditure Survey which allows to analyse the trends in at-home consumption for fish and shellfish, for the main groups of products and the main commodities, and the variation of consumption regarding to the income and to the age of the head of household. The decrease in at-home consumption is confirmed, especially for young people, while eldest people appear as an over-consuming subgroup. The lack of available information about the other types of consumption (out-of-home and intermediate consumption), which importance has been dramatically growing, and about the consumption by one-person households, limits the capacity to draw definitive conclusion and invites to further investigation

What is the demand for farmed fish on the European markets?
This paper analyses what are the potential outlets on European markets for new farmed fish. In the first part, the main striking features about the structure and evolution of the European fish trade over the last decade are presented. The analysis of fish imports and exports provides comprehensive data to characterize the EU fish demand per commodity categories, per species groups, per country, and to estimate price trends for both wild and farmed fish imports. Then, the second part is dedicated to an in-depth analysis of the fresh fish trade, as main outlet for farmed fish. The evolution of the balance trade for the main species groups showing a deficit (salmon, gadoids, other demersal fish, completed by an analysis of the price segmentation of fish imports, highlight the substitution phenomena between farmed and wild fish which occurred over the last decade, while providing an assessment of the fish demand for the different market segments. These results are utilized to analyse the potential outlets on European markets for new farmed species issued from an aquaculture diversification, taking into account the increasing competition from well-established and concentrated fish farming industries (salmon, seabass and seabream), as well as the more recent introduction of low-priced freshwater tropical fish (ex. pangasius). A particular attention is paid to the red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus), a tropical marine fish farmed in the French overseas territories. Future prospects for farmed fish diversification are also discussed as regards the consumer expectations towards image and quality attributes (including environmental)

Analysis of the French demand for oysters and mussels, within the European market
Shellfish farming is the most common and the most established activity of aquaculture in France and in EU15. Such as main suppliers of mussels and oysters, mariculture production makes up the referent market for bivalves molluscs, unlike most other aquatic species for which capture fisheries are prevalent. Moreover, the specificity of oyster cultivation is marked with respect to the French position which is both leader and almost self sufficient on the European market. The sustainable development of shellfish farming is analysed through a demand-oriented-approach . The field of the study covers trading and marketing issues as well as consumer analysis. The comparison between the mussel and the oyster market highlight some key differences, in terms of distribution network, identification of origin and products differentiation, consumer profiles and regions. This lead to examine deeply the ways of market segmentation in relation with the image of the product and the consumer expectations. Quantitative surveys, mainly consumer panels, are used over a 15 years period to attempt a dynamic approach of the age criteria (consumers life cycle and generation effect). This is completed by a qualitative analysis of consumer attitude towards shellfish and an overview of the current innovation process in the two
sectors concerned

Can SRDAM (Regional scheme for the development of marine aquaculture) facilitate the access to new farming sites on French Mediterranean coast?
In France, the absence of further development of marine fish farming over the last 20 years has been attributed to regulatory constraints, and to the difficult access to new farming sites, due to high competition between different uses in the coastal zone. The Regional schemes for the development of marine aquaculture (SRDAM) were introduced by the French Law on modernisation of agriculture and fisheries (LMAP, 27th July 2010). The goals of SRDAM are to make an inventory of existing aquaculture sites and to identify potential sites suitable for aquaculture, and to conciliate the development of marine aquaculture with other coastal activities. As a tool for spatial planning, they are expected to enhance access to new fish farming sites, in line with the ambitious objectives of the French national strategic plan for the development of sustainable aquaculture. Our study focuses on the three SRDAMs on French Mediterranean coast published in 2015, and was based on desk work and on inquiries with professional representatives, administration and experts. We analysed the process to build the SRDAMs and the frame resulting from the process. Two years after the publication of SRDAMs, no application for new farming sites has been submitted. Other constraints, that we discuss, appear to play a major role against the creation of new farms, in opposition with the initial hypothesis that high competition on space was the main constraint. The SRDAMs constitutes a first step in the on-going process for marine coastal zone spatial planning, in relation to the E

Perception in France of Economic Actors and NGO about Genetically Modified Fish
DOGMATIS is a multidisciplinary research project funded by the French Research Agency (ANR, programme ANR-OGM 2007-2010), which gathered specialists of fish transgenesis, GMO detection and regulation, fish market chain economy, consumer sociology and contemporary science philosophy and epistemology. The aim of DOGMATIS was to investigate the questions raised by the use of transgenesis on an animal, and the possible answers in case of application at economic scale.
As for socio-economic aspects, we studied the risk of fortuitous imports (see IFET 10), and we studied the perception of the public through two methodologies : (i) consumers focus groups organised in 2007 and 2010 (see IIFET 10), and (ii) 35 comprehensive interviews with economic actors (wholesalers, retailers, supermarkets, fish farmers) and NGO.
This poster presents the key-points of our results issued from those interviews. If GM Fish is for all actors a “remote object”, interviewees accept to fully project their reflexion in a possible future situation of the use of transgenetic fish in farms and the arrival on the market. For economic actors, the raised questions are related to their activities but also to general questions, as for those observed in the consumers focus-groups. For NGO, GM Fish are hardly considered specifically, but nevertheless would require positions and actions if present

Hepatitis A outbreak affecting men who have sex with men (MSM) in central Argentina, occurred in July 2017-April 2018, later than the European outbreak
During June-2016 - May-2017, several outbreaks of HA were recorded in Europe, especially described in MSM. In our area since July-2017, an increase of hepatitis A (HA) notification was reported. In order to understand the unusual increase of cases occurred in the central region of Argentina, the aim of this study was to describe, characterize and contextualize epidemiologically the HA outbreak occurred this area, until April 2018. Study designHA cases (positive anti-HAV IgM) obtained from the calendar week 29/2017 in which the first case of MSM was recognized were included in our study. HAV RNA detection and molecular characterization was performed from serum samples and / or stool by RT - PCR of VP1 / 2A genomic region (360bp).ResultsOf the 32 cases notified, 87.5% of them were unvaccinated men and 69.6% were MSM (mean age 31.9 years). All MSM associated HAV sequences were genotyped as IA, and clustered with the VRD 521-2016 strain, responsible of causing outbreaks mostly in MSM in Europe since mid-2016. As a consequence of the implementation of immunization in children, and the improvement in socio-economic, hygienic and sanitation factors, young adults are becoming increasingly susceptible to HAV infections. Here we add evidence in South America to the HA outbreaks described worldwide among young MSM, demonstrating the need to reinforce official policy of vaccination, in this group and adjust epidemiological surveillance, catch-up vaccination for adolescents, young adults and immuno suppressed patients.Fil: Mariojouls, Jorge. Evaluating dietary supply of microminerals as a premix in a complete plant ingredient-based diet to juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
Two basal diets M0 and V0 were formulated with marine and plant based ingredient composition. Seven experimental diets were prepared from the two basal diets namely M0, M100, V0, V30, V60, V100 and V150 by incorporating different levels of a micromineral premix (Cu, Fe, Mn, Se and Zn). Triplicate groups of rainbow trout (initial weight: 20 g) reared at 17°C were fed one of each diet to apparent visual satiation over 12 weeks. Among the V diet fed fish, growth and feed intake exhibited maximal response at V60 level of premix inclusion; Apparent availability coefficient of Fe, Cu and Zn decreased linearly with increasing level of premix whereas apparent availability coefficient of Mn and Se was unaffected. The available dietary concentration in basal V0 diet was for Fe, 20.6; Cu, 2.8; Mn, 6.5; Zn, 17.3 and Se, 0.195 (in mg/kg DM) and in the M0 diet for Fe, 63.3; Cu, 5.2; Mn, 2.9; Zn, 35.2 and Se, 0.87 (in mg/kg DM). In reference to NRC (Nutrient requirements of fish and shrimp. Washington, DC: National Research Council, The National Academies Press, 2011) recommendations, the V0 basal diet accounted for 34.3%, 92.9%, 53.9%, 115% and 130.2% and the contribution from M0 diet for 105.5%, 173.3%, 24.2%, 234.7% and 580% of the minimal dietary inclusion levels of Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn and Se to rainbow trout, respectively. However, data on whole body mineral contents showed that normal levels were maintained only for Cu and Mn through supply from basal V0 diet. For Zn and Se, available supply even from the highest supplemented diet (V150) was not sufficient to maintain normal body mineral levels of rainbow trout in the present study. On the whole, optimal dietary inclusion levels of microminerals are altered while using fishmeal-free diets for rainbow trout
