Modelling soil-water interaction with the Material Point Method. Evaluation of single-point and double-point formulations

Get PDF
Many problems in geotechnical engineering involve large deformations and soil-water interactions, which pose challenging issues in computational geomechanics. In the last decade, the Material Point Method (MPM) has been successfully applied in a number of large-deformation geotechnical problems and multi-phase MPM formulations have been recently proposed. In particular, there exist two advanced coupled hy-dro-mechanical MPM approaches to model the interaction between solid grains and pore fluids: the single-point and the double-point formulation. The first discretizes the soil-water mixture with a single set of ma-terial points (MP) which moves according to the solid velocity field. The latter uses two sets of MP one for the fluid phase and the other for the solid phase and they move according to the respective velocity field. The aims of this work is to present and compare the two theories, to emphasize their limitations and poten-tialities, and to discuss their applicability in the geotechnical field. To this end, the results of two numerical examples carried out by using both formulations are presented: a 1D-consolidation problem and a saturated column collapse problem

Marketing Strategies for Seventh-day Adventist Literature in Brazil

Problem There is a great need for the publishing work in Brazil to use different methods. Although several changes have occurred with the advance of technology and urbanization, the methods employed to distribute SDA literature have remained practically the same as those used in earlier times. Literature evangelists are facing greater difficulties in personally talking with people. The traditional door-to-door sales method is reaching fewer and fewer people and new approaches are required to support colporteurs in their work. In addition, sales of literature to church members in Brazil are low and give evidence to the fact that strategies are required to reverse this situation. At the same time, the quality of products available in the marketplace and the business practices related to their production, pricing, distribution, and promotion have improved. Such improvements have increased the expectations of customers and the need for the publishing work in Brazil to develop new approaches to satisfy the customers’ needs and wants. Method The writings of Ellen G. White and other Seventh-day Adventist authors dealing with the publishing work are briefly surveyed. The main methods used to produce, price, distribute, and promote literature in Brazil are summarized. The applicability of marketing for the Seventh-day Adventist publications is discussed and the main marketing principles and tools are considered. Marketing strategies to increase the circulation of literature in Brazil are suggested. Conclusions Marketing has limited applicability for literature regarded as inspired and ideological, and full applicability for literature considered commercial. The Seventh-day Adventist publishing work in Brazil can use proposed marketing approaches and tools to improve the production, pricing, distribution, and promotion of literature

The 43rd UID conference, held in Genova, takes up the theme of ‘Dialogues’ as practice and debate on many fundamental topics in our social life, especially in these complex and not yet resolved times. The city of Genova offers the opportunity to ponder on the value of comparison and on the possibilities for the community, naturally focused on the aspects that concern us, as professors, researchers, disseminators of knowledge, or on all the possibile meanings of the discipline of representation and its dialogue with ‘others’, which we have broadly catalogued in three macro areas: History, Semiotics, Science / Technology. Therefore, “dialogue” as a profitable exchange based on a common language, without which it is impossible to comprehend and understand one another; and the graphic sign that connotes the conference is the precise transcription of this concept: the title ‘translated’ into signs, derived from the visual alphabet designed for the visual identity of the UID since 2017. There are many topics which refer to three macro sessions: - Witnessing (signs and history) - Communicating (signs and semiotics) - Experimenting (signs and sciences) Thanks to the different points of view, an exceptional resource of our disciplinary area, we want to try to outline the prevailing theoretical-operational synergies, the collaborative lines of an instrumental nature, the recent updates of the repertoires of images that attest and nourish the relations among representation, history, semiotics, sciences

Novel agents for acute myeloid leukemia

Get PDF
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a complex hematological disease characterized by genetic and clinical heterogeneity. Recent advances in the understanding of AML pathogenesis have paved the way for the development of new agents targeting specific molecules or mechanisms that contribute to finally move beyond the current standard of care, which is “3 + 7” regimen. In particular, new therapeutic options such as targeted therapies (midostaurin and enasidenib), monoclonal antibodies (gemtuzumab ozogamicin), and a novel liposomal formulation of cytarabine and daunorubicin (CPX-351) have been recently approved, and will be soon available for the treatment of adult patients with AML. In this review, we will present and describe these recently approved drugs as well as selected novel agents against AML that are currently under investigation, and show the most promising results as monotherapy or in combination with chemotherapy. The selection of these emerging treatments is based on the authors’ opinion

This study reports on 65-year-old male with a bicuspid Aortic Stenosis (AS) low flow, low gradient and a congenital Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) of pars membranosa. A ministernotomy and Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB) by aorto-femoral cannulation was performed. The VSD was below the commissure between right and non coronary sinus. It was decided to correct it by a stitch with a pericardial patch and a further safer coverage by the stent of an Intuity Elite aortic valve. To the best of our knowledge this was the first time that a VSD could be covered with a suturless valve for two reasons: International Journal of e and conformable configuration of the valve
