Compound Du Val singularities, five-dimensional SCFTs and GV invariants

In this thesis work we introduce a new method to study the dynamics of M-theory on compound Du Val threefold singularities (cDV). Incidentally, this also furnishes a new way to systematically count the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants (GV) of these geometries and, reversely, to produce threefolds whose GV invariants display required properties. Our construction is inspired by the type IIA limit of M-theory on the considered singularities and rephrases the data of the threefolds in the language of seven-dimensional super Yang-Mills theory. This, more deeply, creates a connection between the algebraic properties of the ADE algebras and the geometric properties of the cDVs. We focused our analysis on two interesting classes of compound Du Val: the simple flops and the quasihomogeneous cDVs, obtaining in both cases complete information on the GV invariants (or, equivalently, on the Higgs Branch of M-theory reduced on these singularities). We also elucidate, during this procedure, the role of exotic type IIA branes bound states, called T-branes, that lack a clear interpretation in terms of the geometry of the threefold

A Framework to Use Public-Private Partnership for Smart City Projects

The concept of Smart City has been emerging as a strategic set of integrated initiatives encompassing infrastructures, technology and digital services for the purpose of enhancing the quality of life of citizens. However, the development and implementation of Smart City projects require considerable investments that are difficult to fund with traditional public finance. In this context, Public-Private-Partnerships (PPP) appear to be suitable solutions to overcome the shortage of public finance and cuts on public spending. However, the adoption of PPP forms for Smart City projects has not been fully explored and only experimentally applied so far. In order to promote the usage of PPP to finance Smart City initiatives, this paper proposes some PPP financial instruments and discusses the associated strengths and weaknesses. In particular, the use of Project Finance, Revenue Sharing and Social Impact Bonds are suggested as sound alternatives and suitable sources of financing for Smart City project

Providing End-to-End Connectivity to SIP User Agents Behind NATs

The widespread diffusion of private networks in SOHO scenarios is fostering an increased deployment of Network Address Translators (NATs). The presence of NATs seriously limits end-to-end connectivity and prevents protocols like the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) from working properly. Higgs Branches of rank-0 5d theories from M-theory on (Aj, Al) and (Ak, Dn) singularities

ABSTRACT We study the dynamics of M-theory on isolated non-toric Calabi-Yau threefold singularities of type (Aj, Al) and (Ak, Dn), engineering five-dimensional rank-zero SCFTs. Our approach consists in mapping these backgrounds to type IIA string theory with D6 branes at angles and O6− planes, computing the five-dimensional open string modes located at the brane intersections. This permits us to characterize the Higgs Branches of these theories as algebraic varieties, determine the flavour and gauge group and inspect subtleties related to T-branes. Our methods apply for all the considered singularities: we give a closed formula for the (Aj, Al) Higgs Branches, and tables for the Higgs Branches of the (Ak, Dn) series

An atypical case of trigeminal trophic syndrome: a legal medicine perspective in medical responsibility

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal trophic syndrome is a rare complication of peripheral or central damage to the trigeminal nerve characterized by anesthesia, paresthesia and a secondary persistent facial ulceration. METHODS: We describe the case of a 40-year-old woman with previous history of Le Fort I osteotomy for a class III malocclusion who developed trigeminal trophic syndrome. Atypically, the cutaneous symptoms appeared bilaterally and 8 years after surgery. RESULTS: Differential diagnosis was based on clinical history, tissue biopsy and serologic evaluation. Atypical findings could be linked to the surgical burdens of Le Fort I osteotomy, a procedure characterized by a bilateral incision on the maxillofacial bones with a reasonable probability of causing a bilateral injury of the peripheral branches of the trigeminal nerve. CONCLUSION: Although the long delay between trigeminal trophic syndrome onset and surgery and the absence of adequate medical evidence cannot confirm a link with previous surgery in this case, the increasing number of maxillofacial surgery cases suggests that this complication may be more frequent in the next decades, and thus, involved specialists should be aware of this condition as a possible complication of maxillofacial surgery procedures

Sexual Dimorphism in Rissoides Pallidus (Giesbrecht) (Crustacea, Stomatopoda)

EnThirteen morphometric characters of Rissoides pallidus (Giesbrecht), a small stomatopod crustacean, were measured from 34 males and 32 females. The specimens were collected by means of bottom trawlers on the upper continental slope of the North Tyrrhenian Sea (mid-western Mediterranean Sea). Comparisons of the slopes between sexes indicated no significant difference in all studied dependent parameters (Y) with carapace length (X), except antennular length and scaphocerite width which were significantly longer and larger in females than in males, respectively. The hierarchical cluster analysis was also performed to identify similarity or dissimilarity among the morphometric characters measured. The biometric relationships considered in this work may prove useful during studies of feeding habits, and to reconstruct the size and biomass of the individuals of this small mantis shrimp from the remains of its exoskeleton.ItTredici caratteri morfometrici sono stati misurati in 34 maschi e 32 femmine di Rissoides pallidus (Giesbrecht), un piccolo crostaceo stomatopode. Gli esemplari sono stati raccolti per mezzo di motopescherecci che operano sulla scarpata continentale superiore del Mar Tirreno settentrionale (Mediterraneo occidentale). La comparazione del parametro b delle regressioni nei due sessi non ha mostrato alcuna differenza significativa tra tutti i parametri indagati, ad esclusione della lunghezza delle antennule e della larghezza dello scafocerite che rispettivamente sono risultati significativamente più lunghe e più larghe nelle femmine che nei maschi. È stata eseguita anche un’analisi di agglomerazione al fine di identificare similarità o dissimilarità tra i caratteri morfometrici utilizzati. Le relazioni biometriche considerate in questo lavoro possono risultare utili negli studi di alimentazione poiché dai resti degli individui di questo piccolo stomatopode è possibile risalire alla loro taglia e relativa biomassa

Recovery from repeated sudden hearing loss in a patient with Takayasu’s arteritis treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy: the first report in the literature

Hearing loss has been rarely reported in Takayasu's arteritis, presents as sudden sensorineural hearing loss and usually responds well to corticosteroid therapy. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is commonly used as a supplementary treatment to corticosteroids for sudden hearing loss. We present the case of a woman with Takayasu's arteritis who had two episodes of hearing loss involving one ear at a time with a 11-month delay between each episode. During the first episode, the patient was treated with high-dose intramuscular corticosteroids with a temporary improvement of auditory threshold, that deteriorated close to previous level 14 days after cessation of therapy. In the second episode, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy was associated to corticosteroids, with a significant, longer term improvement in both ears, including the one that had shown to be unresponsive to previous pharmacologic therapy. Oxygen therapy could have played a role in hearing restoration in this patient, as it could have acted synergically with corticosteroids amplifying their effect
