Motivation and Online Information Literacy Instruction: A Self-Determination Theory Approach

Information literacy skills, including critical thinking and problem-solving skills, are imperative for academic, personal, and professional success. Unfortunately, many students graduate only to be more daunted than ever by the vast amount of information available to them and increasingly rely on convenience over quality in their information-seeking behaviors. This study hoped to address this by increasing students’ motivation for engaging in an online information literacy module. Using self-determination theory (SDT) from the field of motivation, motivationally-supportive modules were designed to support students’ feelings of autonomy and competence and ultimately grades on their final research assignment. Experimental conditions included providing relevance, using non-controlling language, and providing feedback. Results and lessons learned are shared, as well as implications for theory, research, and practice

Perceiving voids: Memory And Sight Afflictions In Contemporary Cinema

My thesis focuses on the perceptive afflictions caused by alteration of the normal biological functioning of sight and memory. These afflictions are related to the redefinition and disgregation of the classical and postclassical cinematographic characters, and affect cinematographic language, establishing a dialectical relation with the filmic image that contaminates our spectatorial perception. In the first chapter I propose a different reading of a few moments in film history, turning points in which a modification of the ordinary sensorial patterns has been introduced. From the German Expressionism to the late authorial experiments of the 60s, there is a sort of hidden history of film that passes through the continuous redefinition of the audience sensory activity. The different perspective upon broadly studied topics leads to the analysis of contemporary cinema: my thesis tries to investigate the reasons that led cinema to continually increase the representation of perceptive afflictions during the last years, and theses “affected” narratives of afflictions and dysfunctions have interesting effects upon so called “normal” perception of the reality surrounding us. The chapters 2 and 3 respectively analyze memory disorders and different dysfunctions of sight: these elements determine alterations in the ‘normal’ and ‘sensory’ perception of reality. They work as narrative factors changing the visual filmic instruments and redefining the role of the subject (and his/her uncertain definition of identity) in contemporary narratives that show how new technologies are profoundly transforming (and enhancing) the perceptive mechanisms involved in our spectatorial activity. In this work I analyze those films that are mostly committed to a clear and readable narration. My study primarily concentrates on American cinema of the last 30 years – with particular attention to popular Hollywood productions – because Hollywood has become the privileged ‘laboratory’ for the negotiation of gaze and images in the contemporary mediascape (while during the classical era experimental and avant-garde cinema were the “place” in which audience experienced the most important redefinitions of the boundaries between different types of mediated perception

Building a Culture of Collaboration and Shared Responsibility for Educational Equity Work through an Inclusive Teaching Community of Practice

For libraries to be equitable spaces as educational institutions and places of employment, it is necessary that educational equity be a shared, collaborative goal. Unfortunately, equity and inclusion work in libraries has historically been an individual pursuit that falls disproportionately on the shoulders of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) library workers. Communities of practice employ social learning principles to facilitate praxis and offer opportunities to develop shared goals, language, and responsibility. This article explores how we developed and implemented an inclusive teaching community of practice with members of our instruction department in order to foster a culture of discussing inequity in higher education, develop and implement inclusive teaching practices, and cultivate a shared responsibility to be equitable instructors and colleagues. We highlight the importance of library workers from majority groups, especially white library workers, to engage meaningfully in educational equity work to lessen the burdens faced by those with marginalized identities, particularly BIPOC library workers, and to ultimately foster educational equity for all by creating inclusive workspaces, libraries, and learning experiences

La historiografía humanista en los albores del siglo XVI: la Crónica d’Aragón de Lucio Marineo Sículo, traducida al castellano por el bachiller Juan de Molina (Valencia, Joan Jofré, 1524)

La presencia de hombres de letras italianos en la Península Ibérica durante el reinado de los Reyes Católicos (1474-1516) constituye uno de los factores principales para el despegue del Humanismo hispano (Gómez Moreno, 1994). De entre tantos nombres ilustres, quizá sean Pedro Mártir de Anglería y Lucio Marineo Sículo los más conocidos, en especial este último, a quien se le atribuye un papel esencial en este proceso (Rummel, 1997). Nuestro objetivo en este trabajo es el de editar una de sus obras, la Crónica d’Aragón, título de la traducción que el bachiller Juan de Molina efectuó del original latino de Marineo Sículo. Las andanzas biográficas del erudito italiano han sido acotadas de manera reciente por la editora de su epistolario, T. Jiménez Calvente (2001); ante tal buen hacer, remitimos a ese estudio para el conocimiento de la biografía del humanista y únicamente revisaremos aquí un par de detalles referentes a la Crónica que es objeto de nuestra edición. Marineo Sículo publicó el original latino de su crónica, titulado De primis Aragonie regibus, en la imprenta zaragozana de Jorge Coci el 30 de abril de 1509 (Norton, 74 y 192). Gracias a las noticias de Abizanda (1915, 324), sabemos que el autor recibió la nada despreciable cantidad de mil sueldos en dinero de Jaca (Coci recibió justo la mitad), a modo de emolumentos por la impresión de esta obra. El período en que Marineo Sículo vivió entre Zaragoza y Monzón, durante los años 1508 y 1510) destaca por la fecundidad de la actividad cronística del erudito italiano (Jiménez Calvente, 2001, 51-62), así como por las mutuas relaciones e influencias entre él y el círculo intelectual del Reino de Aragón, en especial los humanistas naturales de Alcañiz (Maestre, 1990). Sin embargo, la obra parece deberse al mecenazgo de Alonso de Aragón, hijo ilegítimo de Fernando el Católico, verdadero promotor de que fuese Marineo Sículo quien se dedicase a esta labor (Jiménez Calvente, 2000, 208-212)
