    Astrometry in crowded fields towards the Galactic Bulge

    The astrometry towards the Galactic Bulge is hampered by high stellar crowding and patchy extinction. This effect is particularly severe for optical surveys such as Gaia. In this study, we assess the consistency of proper motions (PMs) between optical (Gaia DR3) and near-infrared (VIRAC2) catalogues in comparison with PMs measured with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in several crowded fields towards the Galactic Bulge and in Galactic globular clusters. Assuming that the PMs are well characterised, the uncertainty-normalised PM differences between pairs of catalogues are expected to follow a normal distribution. A deviation from a normal distribution defines the inflation factor rr. Multiplying the PM uncertainties by rr brings the Gaia (VIRAC2) PMs into a 1σ1\sigma agreement with HST PMs. The factor rr has a dependence on stellar surface density and for the brightest stars in our sample (G<18), there is a strong dependence on G-band magnitude. Assuming that the HST PMs are well determined and free from systematic errors, we find that Gaia DR3 PM uncertainties are better characterised, having r<1.5, in fields under 200 Gaia DR3 sources per arcmin2^2, and are underestimated by up to a factor of 4 in fields with more than 300 Gaia DR3 sources per arcmin2^2. For the most crowded fields in VIRAC2, the PM uncertainties are underestimated by a factor of 1.1 up to 1.5, with a dependence on J-band magnitude. In all fields, the brighter sources have the larger rr value. At the faint end (G>19), rr is close to 1, meaning that the PMs already fully agree with the HST measurements within 1σ1\sigma. In the crowded fields with both catalogues in common, VIRAC2 PMs agree with HST PMs and do not need an inflation factor for their uncertainties. Given the depth and completeness of VIRAC2 in such fields, it is an ideal complement to Gaia DR3 for proper motion studies towards the Galactic Bulge.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 11 pages (+6 in Appendix), 9 figures (+18 in Appendix), 4 table

    Degradation rate of 5-fluorouracil in metastatic colorectal cancer. A new predictive outcome biomarker?

    BACKGROUND: 5-FU based chemotherapy is the most common first line regimen used for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Identification of predictive markers of response to chemotherapy is a challenging approach for drug selection. The present study analyzes the predictive role of 5-FU degradation rate (5-FUDR) and genetic polymorphisms (MTHFR, TSER, DPYD) on survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Genetic polymorphisms of MTHFR, TSER and DPYD, and the 5-FUDR of homogenous patients with mCRC were retrospectively studied. Genetic markers and the 5-FUDR were correlated with clinical outcome. RESULTS: 133 patients affected by mCRC, treated with fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy from 2009 to 2014, were evaluated. Patients were classified into three metabolic classes, according to normal distribution of 5-FUDR in more than 1000 patients, as previously published: poor-metabolizer (PM) with 5-FU-DR ≤ 0,85 ng/ml/106 cells/min (8 pts); normal metabolizer with 0,85 < 5-FU-DR < 2,2 ng/ml/106 cells/min (119 pts); ultra-rapid metabolizer (UM) with 5-FU-DR ≥ 2,2 ng/ml/106 cells/min (6 pts). PM and UM groups showed a longer PFS respect to normal metabolizer group (14.5 and 11 months respectively vs 8 months; p = 0.029). A higher G3-4 toxicity rate was observed in PM and UM, respect to normal metabolizer (50% in both PM and UM vs 18%; p = 0.019). No significant associations between genes polymorphisms and outcomes or toxicities were observed. CONCLUSION: 5-FUDR seems to be significantly involved in predicting survival of patients who underwent 5-FU based CHT for mCRC. Although our findings require confirmation in large prospective studies, they reinforce the concept that individual genetic variation may allow personalized selection of chemotherapy to optimize clinical outcomes

    Application of data fusion techniques to direct geographical traceability indicators

    A hierarchical data fusion approach has been developed proposing multivariate curve resolution (MCR) as a variable reduction tool. The case study presented concerns the characterization of soil samples of the Modena District. It was performed in order to understand, at a pilot study stage, the geographical variability of the zone prior to planning a representative soils sampling to derive geographical traceability models for Lambrusco Wines. Soils samples were collected from four producers of Lambrusco Wines, located in in-plane and hill areas. Depending on the extension of the sampled fields the number of points collected varies from three to five and, for each point, five depth levels were considered. The different data blocks consisted of X-ray powder diffraction (XRDP) spectra, metals concentrations relative to thirty-four elements and the 87Sr/86Sr isotopic abundance ratio, a very promising geographical traceability marker. A multi steps data fusion strategy has been adopted. Firstly, the metals concentrations dataset was weighted and concatenated with the values of strontium isotopic ratio and compressed. The resolved components described common patterns of variation of metals content and strontium isotopic ratio. The X-ray powder spectra profiles were resolved in three main components that can be referred to calcite, quartz and clays contributions. Then, a high-level data fusion approach was applied by combining the components arising from the previous data sets. The results show interesting links among the different components arising from XRDP, the metals pattern and to which of these 87Sr/86Sr Isotopic Ratio variation is closer. The combined information allowed capturing the variability of the analyzed soil samples

    Recognition of objects in orbit and their intentions with space‐borne sub‐THz Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar

    An important aspect of Space Situational Awareness is to estimate the intent of objects in space. This paper discusses how discriminating features can be obtained from Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar images of such objects and how these discriminators can be used to recognise the objects or to estimate their intent. If the object is, for example, a satellite of a known type, the scheme proposed is able to recognise it. The ability of the scheme to detect damage to the object is also discussed. The focus is on imagery obtained in the sub-terahertz band (typically 300 GHz) because of the greater imaging capability given by the diffuse scattering which is observed at these frequencies. The paper also discusses the importance of being able to use images obtained by electromagnetic simulation to be able to train the subsystem which recognises features of the objects and describes a practical scheme for creating these simulations for large objects at these very short wavelengths

    Optimization of an analytical method based on SPME-Arrow and chemometrics for the characterization of the aroma profile of commercial bread

    A SPME-Arrow GC-MS approach, coupled with chemometrics, was used to thoroughly investigate the impact of different types of yeast (sourdough, bear's yeast and a mixture of both) and their respective leaving time (one, three and five hours) on VOCs of commercial bread samples. This aspect is of paramount importance for the baking industry to adjust recipe modifications and production parameters, as well as to meet consumer needs in formulating new products. A deep learning approach, PARADISe (PARAFAC2-based deconvolution and identification system), was used to analyse the obtained chromatograms in an untargeted manner. In particular, PARADISe, was able to perform a fast deconvolution of the chromatographic peaks directly from raw chromatographic data to allow a putatively identification of 66 volatile organic compounds, including alcohols, esters, carboxylic acids, ketones, aldehydes. Finally, Principal Component Analysis, applied on the areas of the resolved compounds, showed that bread samples differentiate according to their recipe and highlighted the most relevant volatile compounds responsible for the observed differences

    A mid level data fusion strategy for the Varietal Classification of Lambrusco PDO wines

    Nowadays the necessity to reveal the hidden information from complex data sets is increasing due to the development of high-throughput instrumentation. The possibility to jointly analyze data sets arising from different sources (e.g. different analytical determinations/platforms) allows capturing the latent information that would not be extracted by the individual analysis of each block of data. Several approaches are proposed in the literature and are generally referred to as data fusion approaches. In this work a mid level data fusion is proposed for the characterization of three varieties (Salamino di Santa Croce, Grasparossa di Castelvetro, Sorbara) of Lambrusco wine, a typical PDO wine of the district of Modena (Italy). Wine samples of the three different varieties were analyzed by means of 1H-NMR spectroscopy, Emission-Excitation Fluorescence Spectroscopy and HPLC-DAD of the phenolic compounds. Since the analytical outputs are characterized by different dimensionalities (matrix and tensor), several multivariate analyses were applied (PCA, PARAFAC, MCR-ALS) in order to extract and merge, in a hierarchical way, the information present in each data set. The results showed that this approach was able to well characterize Lambrusco samples giving also the possibility to understand the correlation between the sources of information arising from the three analytical techniques

    Antiplatelet therapy is not a safer alternative to oral anticoagulants, even in older hospital-discharged patients with atrial fibrillation

    Although oral anticoagulant therapy (OAT) is recommended for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), it is widely underused among older patients, who are frequently prescribed antiplatelet therapy (APT) instead. We assessed mortality and incidence of ischemic and hemorrhagic events according to prescription of OAT or APT in older medical in-patients with AF discharged from hospital. Stroke and bleeding risk were evaluated using the CHA2DS2-VASC (Congestive heart failure/ left ventricular dysfunction, Hypertension, Aged ≥75 years, Diabetes Mellitus, Stroke/transient ischemic attack/systemic embolism, Vascular Disease, Aged 65-74 years, Sex Category) and HAS-BLED (Hypertension, Abnormal renal/liver function, Stroke, Bleeding history or predisposition, Labile international normalized ratio, Elderly, Drugs/alcohol concomitantly) scores. Comorbidity, cognitive status and functional autonomy were assessed using standardized scales. Association of OAT and APT with overall mortality, ischemic stroke and bleeding events was evaluated through multivariate analysis and propensity score matching. During a mean follow-up period of 11 months 384 of the 962 patients discharged (mean age 82.9±6.6 years, 59.1% female) died (39.9%), 66 had an ischemic stroke and 49 experienced a major bleeding event. Compared with APT, OAT was associated with reduced overall mortality after multivariate analysis [odds ratio (OR) 0.62, confidence interval (CI): 0.46-0.83] and after propensity score matched analysis (OR 0.65, CI: 0.52-0.82, P=0.0004), with a not significant reduced incidence of total and fatal ischemic stroke, and without increase in total, intracranial, major and fatal bleedings. In a sample of older AF patients with poor health status, OAT was associated with reduced mortality, without evidence of a significant increase in major or fatal bleedings

    Health technology assessment of pathogen reduction technologies applied to plasma for clinical use

    Although existing clinical evidence shows that the transfusion of blood components is becoming increasingly safe, the risk of transmission of known and unknown pathogens, new pathogens or re-emerging pathogens still persists. Pathogen reduction technologies may offer a new approach to increase blood safety. The study is the output of collaboration between the Italian National Blood Centre and the Post-Graduate School of Health Economics and Management, Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Rome, Italy. A large, multidisciplinary team was created and divided into six groups, each of which addressed one or more HTA domains.Plasma treated with amotosalen + UV light, riboflavin + UV light, methylene blue or a solvent/detergent process was compared to fresh-frozen plasma with regards to current use, technical features, effectiveness, safety, economic and organisational impact, and ethical, social and legal implications. The available evidence is not sufficient to state which of the techniques compared is superior in terms of efficacy, safety and cost-effectiveness. Evidence on efficacy is only available for the solvent/detergent method, which proved to be non-inferior to untreated fresh-frozen plasma in the treatment of a wide range of congenital and acquired bleeding disorders. With regards to safety, the solvent/detergent technique apparently has the most favourable risk-benefit profile. Further research is needed to provide a comprehensive overview of the cost-effectiveness profile of the different pathogen-reduction techniques. The wide heterogeneity of results and the lack of comparative evidence are reasons why more comparative studies need to be performed
