Can the meson cloud explain the nucleon strangeness?
We use the meson cloud model, including the kaon and the contributions,
to estimate the electric and magnetic strange form factors of the nucleon. We
compare our results with the recent measurements of the strange quark
contribution to parity-violating asymmetries in the forward G0 electron-proton
scattering experiment. We conclude that it is not possible to explain the data
using this model.Comment: version accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Did foreign aid help developing countries response to Covid-19?
We study if foreign aid received in the past towards Development and towards the Health sector helped developing countries response to COVID-19, using the number of Cases and Deaths of COVID-19as outcome variables. We find statistically significant evidence that both types of funding have a positive relationship with the number of Cases and Deaths of COVID-19 registered. This result may indicate that countries that receive more funding are also the ones in worse health and development conditions to begin with, and even when receiving higher disbursements, they remain less prepared to fight COVID-19. Because we lack a control for number of tests conducted for COVID-19, another hypothesis is that countries that receive more funding were able to run more tests for COVID-19, resulting in higher records of cases and deaths from the virus
Constraints on feedback processes during the formation of early-type galaxies
Galaxies are found to obey scaling relations between a number of observables.
These relations follow different trends at the low- and the high-mass ends. The
processes driving the curvature of scaling relations remain uncertain. In this
letter, we focus on the specific family of early-type galaxies, deriving the
star formation histories of a complete sample of visually classified galaxies
from SDSS-DR7 over the redshift range 0.01<z<0.025, covering a stellar mass
interval from 10^9 to 3 x 10^11 Msun. Our sample features the characteristic
"knee" in the surface brightness vs. mass distribution at Mstar~3 x 10^10 Msun.
We find a clear difference between the age and metallicity distributions of the
stellar populations above and beyond this knee, which suggests a sudden
transition from a constant, highly efficient mode of star formation in
high-mass galaxies, gradually decreasing towards the low-mass end of the
sample. At fixed mass, our early-type sample is more efficient in building up
the stellar content at early times in comparison to the general population of
galaxies, with half of the stars already in place by redshift z~2 for all
masses. The metallicity-age trend in low-mass galaxies is not compatible with
infall of metal-poor gas, suggesting instead an outflow-driven relation.Comment: 12 pages,3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Cognitive-behavioural coaching : applications to health and personal development contexts
© All rights reserved by Marina Carvalho., et al.Coaching programs are demonstrating their effectiveness in several contexts and populations, namely in personal development through the lifespan, and in health contexts. In the present conceptual paper, Coaching definitions, goals, procedures, benefits and limitations are described and critically discussed. Specifically, differences between Coaching and Psychotherapies are emphasized. Based on this knowledge, the structure of a Cognitive-Behavioral Coaching program is presented, and its differences in relation to Cognitive-Behavioral Psychotherapies are also emphasized and critically discussed. Finally, the evidences for Coaching programs effectiveness, in particular in Health and Personal Development contexts, are reported, based on meta-analytic data and on literature systematic reviews. The need for qualified training and supervision, as well as limitations and future directions are also pointed in order to contribute to diminish conceptual and practical ambiguities that may interfere with Cognitive-Behavioral Coaching and, in consequence, that may interfere with the persons’ goals for their health or personal development.Margarida Gaspar de Matos receives a Sabbatical grant from Foundation for Science and Technology – SFRH/BSAB/135160/2017.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The Millennium Villages Project (MVP) was elaborated in order to help African poorest regions to reach the Millennium Development Goals through investments in health, education, agricultural productivity and infrastructure. MVP received positive critiques ”“ regarding to local infrastructural progress -, but also negative ones - related to its lack of sustainability and bad impacts in villagers lives. Depending on the perspective used to examine reality one can come to a certain conclusion, so the present paper aims to analyze MVP through different Development theories: Modernisation and Postmodernism. Through Modernisation it can be implied that MVP is a real whish of the Western countries to incentive development and provide aid through their know-how; on the other hand, Postmodernism would consider MVP a trial to spread the Western values that does not represent the real needs of the lcoals. Both theories present strong and weak points and the idea will be discussed deeper during the research.
