    The relationship between leadership, communication, engagement and effective performance in secondary schools

    The ineffective performance of school operational teams in secondary schools in South Africa reflects in many negative aspects, from team operations, disengaged educators, ineffective leadership and communication and low performance in the teaching and learning domains. The purpose of this study is not only to contribute to the body of knowledge in this educational management field, but by examining the enabling factors that drive the high performance level of these school teams, these could assist with operation that utilises more of their human capital potential. By examining these high performance factors utilising a diagnostic tool, gaps could also be identified. To achieve this purpose, the objective was to develop a theoretical conceptual model and a school analytical tool that could holistically analyse and identify the strengths and weaknesses within each school. The purpose was to identify the enabling factors that create and drive the high performance of school operational teams in secondary schools This fingerprinting or profiling of the school could thereby allow for more cost effective interventions to be implemented within each school context. The aligned diagnostic and interventions addressing the gap enabling factors, assists in the school improvement and strategic plan for the school. At present, many schools do not have the resources or skills to conduct reliable and valid self, team and needs-assessments, therefore school improvement plans and strategic plans are often not using site-based analytics. By conducting these, a more focused and scientifically based, as well as cost effective intervention, could be implemented resulting in a more effective result in best practice. The three focus areas examined in the literature study in the field of educational management and school improvement, were leadership, engagement and communication. Initially the literature study indicated, thirteen independent and mediating variables around these key areas, which formed the foundations for the development of the design and development of the survey instrument. The thesis was based on a number of theoretical frameworks from which the conceptual model was devised. The dependent variables included literature based metrics for factors of Organisational Commitment and Employee Engagement, as well as the percentage Grade 12 pass rate obtained from the average performance over the last three years at the school. All the variables were hypothesised, defined and operationalised in the design of the school analytical tool for assessing the effective performance of the school operational teams. Independent and mediating variables included: Educator Team Competencies, Perceptions of leadership, Culture Alignment, Innovation potential, Employee experience, Fairness, Hybrid leadership environment, Trust, Support, Communication as well as Infrastructure, Leader-Member Exchange and Perceptions of Learner engagement. This predominantly quantitative research study examined the effective performance levels of school operational teams utilising an ecological systems theory approach. The School Analytical Tool comprised 71 items which were subjected to validity and reliability tests. Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Cronbach Alpha coefficients were conducted on the measuring instrument. Data was collected from school operational teams which included principals, educators and administrators from twenty-nine different secondary schools, in different contexts and across three regional areas in South Africa. A total of 413 respondents participated and a response rate of 40% was achieved. Ethical permission was obtained from all the relevant parties prior to commencement of the research study. After the proposed conceptual model was devised, structured equation modelling (SEM) was used to test the hypothesised significance of the relationships between the variables in the integrated model. Two sub-models were identified: Human (Individual/Team) Sub-Model A and System (Organisation/School) Sub-Model B. These were measured by two indices, the Team Performance Index and the School High Performance Work Index respectively. These measures showed different linkages to the Educator Employee Engagement and Organisational Commitment metrics. From the SEM, three models were tested for goodness of fit criteria with version 3 showing a reasonably good fit with a RMSEA (0.056 CI 95%: 0.054-0.058), with a CFI (0.86) and a normed Chi squared of 2.24. The objectives of this thesis were therefore achieved in developing a statistically and theoretically validated conceptual model for enabling factors that drive effective school operational teams, as well as a school analytical tool (SAT) that could identify gap factors for school profiling. The practical application of school profiling utilising the SAT was also indicated by analysing a high and low performing school from different regions in South Africa, indicating the ability to identify weaknesses and strengths of the school operational teams within different contexts

    A study of the factors impacting on the performance of school opernational teams in secondary schools in Nelson Mandela Bay

    It is critical in this dynamic and changing environment that both the leadership and educators of schools and organisations are well equipped with the skills and knowledge to create high performance teams (HPT). High performance teams can be defined as those highly motivated team players in the organisation or school that maximise their people integrated knowledge, skills and values to a shared purpose or vision of their stakeholders. In this mixed method research an analysis of the whole school operational teams of some secondary schools including all educators, head of departments, administrators and principals was undertaken. Four secondary schools from two quintile groups situated in various areas of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan were the sampling units and the sample size was eighty one. Both quantitative and qualitative data was collected utilising a carefully constructed questionnaire based on a theoretical conceptual framework of enabling factors for HPT in business contexts. The theoretical framework of the Kenexa High Performance Model was utilised in this study. A questionnaire was constructed based on the factors of the High Performance Work Index (HPW) study done by the Australian Business School. This model was adjusted to utilise factors aligned to those factors within the school operational context. Using other literature references further factors were included into the survey instrument. The School High Performance Work Index (SHPWI) was the dependent variable while the independent variables included organizational commitment, and employee engagement. These were literature based measures and the questionnaire items were taken from previous research studies, thereby allowing construct validity. The other independent variables included Communication, Leadership, Strategic Management, School Organizational Climate, Positive Practices, Conflict Management, Motivation and Trust. A statistical analysis was undertaken on each school’s team response data. Reliability and validity of the constructed questionnaire was shown by using the Kenexa employee engagement index and the Organizational Commitment measure, which were highly correlated with the SHPWI. In literature, high performance teams (HPT) show common patterns in business and in this study it was seen that a number of common factors contributed towards a HPT in school operational teams. In this research study the main enabling factors in whole school operational teams that could lead to the formation of HPT’s involved factors of leadership, communication and motivation. The SHPWI showed a high correlation with employee engagement and organizational commitment. The HPT profile involved innovation (freedom of thinking), employee (educator) engagement, fairness, leadership, learner needs, communication, trust, conflict management, school organizational climate, positive practices, strategic management and motivation. In the correlation between the SHPWI and the independent variables the highest correlation (statistically significant at p 0. 500) occurred between the School High Performance Index and Leadership (0.822), Communication (0.785) and Motivation (0.766). In the multiple linear regression (MLR) of the results of this study the highest correlations with a value of R2 = 0.774 was obtained with variables of Leadership, Communication, Motivation and Strategic Management factors. Qualitative data was coded and linked with the factors in the quantitative data and the top five factors were selected and summarised for each school. Merged data showed that each school exhibited a different profile of strengths and weaknesses. Recommendations were outlined for each school operational team. Different schools in different quintiles have different needs and gap factors that require improvement. It is therefore imperative that schools analyse their strengths and weaknesses within their school operational teams. This research study aimed therefore to start research on a human resource metric that can be further developed to allow school operational teams to examine and analyze their own HPT profile, so that specific interventions may be implemented

    Genome sequence of an Australian kangaroo, Macropus eugenii, provides insight into the evolution of mammalian reproduction and development.

    BACKGROUND: We present the genome sequence of the tammar wallaby, Macropus eugenii, which is a member of the kangaroo family and the first representative of the iconic hopping mammals that symbolize Australia to be sequenced. The tammar has many unusual biological characteristics, including the longest period of embryonic diapause of any mammal, extremely synchronized seasonal breeding and prolonged and sophisticated lactation within a well-defined pouch. Like other marsupials, it gives birth to highly altricial young, and has a small number of very large chromosomes, making it a valuable model for genomics, reproduction and development. RESULTS: The genome has been sequenced to 2 × coverage using Sanger sequencing, enhanced with additional next generation sequencing and the integration of extensive physical and linkage maps to build the genome assembly. We also sequenced the tammar transcriptome across many tissues and developmental time points. Our analyses of these data shed light on mammalian reproduction, development and genome evolution: there is innovation in reproductive and lactational genes, rapid evolution of germ cell genes, and incomplete, locus-specific X inactivation. We also observe novel retrotransposons and a highly rearranged major histocompatibility complex, with many class I genes located outside the complex. Novel microRNAs in the tammar HOX clusters uncover new potential mammalian HOX regulatory elements. CONCLUSIONS: Analyses of these resources enhance our understanding of marsupial gene evolution, identify marsupial-specific conserved non-coding elements and critical genes across a range of biological systems, including reproduction, development and immunity, and provide new insight into marsupial and mammalian biology and genome evolution

    A collaboratively derived environmental research agenda for Galapagos

    Galápagos is one of the most pristine archipelagos in the world and its conservation relies upon research and sensible management. In recent decades both the interest in, and the needs of, the islands have increased, yet the funds and capacity for necessary research have remained limited. It has become, therefore, increasingly important to identify areas of priority research to assist decision-making in Galápagos conservation. This study identified 50 questions considered priorities for future research and management. The exercise involved the collaboration of policy makers, practitioners and researchers from more than 30 different organisations. Initially, 360 people were consulted to generate 781 questions. An established process of preworkshop voting and three rounds to reduce and reword the questions, followed by a two-day workshop, was used to produce the final 50 questions. The most common issues raised by this list of questions were human population growth, climate change and the impact of invasive alien species. These results have already been used by a range of organisations and politicians and are expected to provide the basis for future research on the islands so that its sustainability may be enhanced. </jats:p

    Transcriptomic analysis supports similar functional roles for the two thymuses of the tammar wallaby

    Background: The thymus plays a critical role in the development and maturation of T-cells. Humans have a single thoracic thymus and presence of a second thymus is considered an anomaly. However, many vertebrates have multiple thymuses. The tammar wallaby has two thymuses: a thoracic thymus (typically found in all mammals) and a dominant cervical thymus. Researchers have known about the presence of the two wallaby thymuses since the 1800s, but no genome-wide research has been carried out into possible functional differences between the two thymic tissues. Here, we used pyrosequencing to compare the transcriptomes of a cervical and thoracic thymus from a single 178 day old tammar wallaby.Results: We show that both the tammar thoracic and the cervical thymuses displayed gene expression profiles consistent with roles in T-cell development. Both thymuses expressed genes that mediate distinct phases of T-cells differentiation, including the initial commitment of blood stem cells to the T-lineage, the generation of T-cell receptor diversity and development of thymic epithelial cells. Crucial immune genes, such as chemokines were also present. Comparable patterns of expression of non-coding RNAs were seen. 67 genes differentially expressed between the two thymuses were detected, and the possible significance of these results are discussed.Conclusion: This is the first study comparing the transcriptomes of two thymuses from a single individual. Our finding supports that both thymuses are functionally equivalent and drive T-cell development. These results are an important first step in the understanding of the genetic processes that govern marsupial immunity, and also allow us to begin to trace the evolution of the mammalian immune system

    Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

    Genome-wide structural variant analysis identifies risk loci for non-Alzheimer’s dementias

    We characterized the role of structural variants, a largely unexplored type of genetic variation, in two non-Alzheimer’s dementias, namely Lewy body dementia (LBD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD)/amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). To do this, we applied an advanced structural variant calling pipeline (GATK-SV) to short-read whole-genome sequence data from 5,213 European-ancestry cases and 4,132 controls. We discovered, replicated, and validated a deletion in TPCN1 as a novel risk locus for LBD and detected the known structural variants at the C9orf72 and MAPT loci as associated with FTD/ALS. We also identified rare pathogenic structural variants in both LBD and FTD/ALS. Finally, we assembled a catalog of structural variants that can be mined for new insights into the pathogenesis of these understudied forms of dementia

    Genome sequencing analysis identifies new loci associated with Lewy body dementia and provides insights into its genetic architecture

    The genetic basis of Lewy body dementia (LBD) is not well understood. Here, we performed whole-genome sequencing in large cohorts of LBD cases and neurologically healthy controls to study the genetic architecture of this understudied form of dementia, and to generate a resource for the scientific community. Genome-wide association analysis identified five independent risk loci, whereas genome-wide gene-aggregation tests implicated mutations in the gene GBA. Genetic risk scores demonstrate that LBD shares risk profiles and pathways with Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, providing a deeper molecular understanding of the complex genetic architecture of this age-related neurodegenerative condition
