Long-term impact of climate change on mortality : a study for Portugal
Mestrado Bolonha em Actuarial ScienceThis work aims to study the long-term impact of climate change on mortality rates in Portugal, having in mind the specific setting of life insurance business in the country.
Life insurance requires, among other factors, accurate mortality forecasts, reason why considering the effects of climate change on mortality in the long-term is essential for correct pricing and reserving of life insurance products.
After a review of the (still scarce) existing literature, it was possible to conclude that only temperature and air pollution will pose a material risk to the population mortality, and consequently to life insurance. Applying models and data already available, the effects of both risk factors were assessed at a regional level, due to the exposure differences among the Portuguese regions, and considering years 2030 and 2050. The option for 2030 and 2050 was made precisely in order to determine the population-weighted mortality shock, resulting from temperature and air pollution variations, in the long-run.
The overall results indicate that the effects of temperature change will vary depending on age (younger population and older population, for instance) and the year (2030 or 2050). For air pollution, and because climate projections suggest the decrease in greenhouse gas emissions, the concentration of the main pollutants affecting health will consequently decrease. This results in the cause related mortality to decrease over time, throughout all ages.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Validation of the portuguese version of the Body Appreciation Scale-2 for Children
A análise fatorial confirmatória
função do sexo.
Tim We : how We became a Tim
Tim We is a Portuguese company that operates in the mobile services industry by offering mobile entertainment content, mobile marketing and mobile payment solutions to mobile carriers, governments, NGOs, media companies, brand owners and mobile-phone end-users. It was founded in 2002 by two entrepreneurs who, in a decade, have diversified Tim We‟s services‟ portfolio, expanded the business internationally and managed to have revenues and profits growing continuously. This company is almost entirely focused on the emerging markets, especially in Latin America, while Portugal only contributes with 2,6% of the total revenues.
Tim We is the background of the present dissertation which is composed by a Teaching Case-Study directed to the students and a Teaching Note directed to the instructors.
The Teaching Case-Study allows students to think and discuss about entrepreneurship, internationalization, as well as, the success factors of Tim We, its threats and the future scenarios based on the description and history of the company. In addition, students are encouraged to reflect about the different environments where it operates and its strategies, which some may seem irrelevant but are the key factors for success.
The Teaching Note is a guideline with explanations and information about the Case-Study. It includes an analysis about Tim We‟s expansion, its business model, the strengths of the company that led it to success and the threats that it is facing. This section also presents what has happened and the future strategies. To finish, there are guidelines of how instructors can conduct the case-study lecture
Circular economy in plastic waste - Analysis of resource and energy productivity
The massive increase in plastic waste, gas emissions as well as the overexploitation of
natural resources have a negative influence on the ecosystem. The European Union, as a
pioneer in the circular economy, is confronting this problem by implementing strategies to
change this trend. Decreasing the use of resources and energy in industry while being able
to sustainably manage plastic waste, use renewable energy, increase jobs and contribute to
economic development can accelerate the circular process. This investigation analyses the
transition to a circular economy through resource and energy productivity in relation to EU
countries between 2004 and 2018. The method applied is the Autoregressive Distributed
Lag (ARDL) Model, with the help of the Estimator Driscool Kraay. The results obtained
confirm a positive relationship between recycling and valorisation of plastic and resource
productivity. However, high energy taxation, low investment in research and development,
and fewer job opportunities stand out as barriers to circular development.
A análise destas variáveis avalia a
Multi-scale approach for identifying plastics in environmental compartments and understanding transport and distribution
The vast majority of the plastic produced in the last century is accumulated in the environment,
leading to an exacerbated contamination of marine environments due to transport from land to the
ocean. Once in the ocean, and through mechanical abrasion, oxidation, and photodegradation, large
plastics degrade into microplastics (MPs) - 0.1 μm to 5 mm (European Food Safety Authority, 2016).
MPs are widely transported through water currents throughout the marine environment reaching the
water surface, water column, and sediments. Hence, they have become widespread contaminants of
emerging concern in the marine environment since they can be accumulated by aquatic species, entering
the trophic chain and becoming a potential threat to humans. Therefore, in the present research, we
aimed to decipher the transport and distribution time-courses between different organs of sentinel
aquatic organisms. For this purpose, two marine organisms placed in a microcosm: the mussel Mytilus
galloprovincialis and the polychaete Hediste diversicolor were exposed to fluorescent polystyrene
microplastics of 1 μm. MPs were spiked into the overlying seawater for the exposure, creating three
experimental groups: control, low dose (103 particles/mL), and high dose (105 particles/mL). Exposures
were performed over short- and long- exposure times (1 hour, 4 hours, 24 hours, and 72 hours).
Organisms were collected, dissected out, frozen in liquid nitrogen, and stored at - 40ºC for further
histology and fluorescent microscopy analyses (EX: 482/35 nm; DM: 506 nm; EM: 536/40 nm).
Different anatomical parts of the body were selected and processed for the polychaetes: hindgut, midgut,
and foregut. In mussels, cross-sections of the whole animal and also individualized digestive glands
and gills were obtained. As expected, no fluorescent MPs were detected in ragworms tissues.
Nevertheless, in mussels particles were found in distinct parts of the digestive tract (stomach, digestive
diverticula, gastrointestinal segments) and gills. Even if the majority of the MPs were localized in the
lumen of the digestive tract, in some cases, they were detected inside the digestive epithelium (i.e.
digestive cells). The identification of MPs and their internalization in the digestive system was
confirmed using Raman spectroscopy. The obtained data reveal a trend of decrease in MPs number in
the digestive tract (mainly in the stomach) of mussels with time, being more noticeable when comparing
mussels exposed to MPs for short times (1h, 4 h) with longer times (24 h, 72 h). Thus, the histology
with frozen sections, together with Raman microscopy, appeared to be an accurate methodology for
detecting MPs in tissues and revealing their presence in different structures of the digestive tract of
mussels. This work contributes to understanding the distribution, fate, and impact of MPs in the food
chain in the real environment.
Music Streaming Services: Understanding the drivers of customer purchase and intention to recommend these services
Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Statistics and Information Management, specialization in Information Analysis and ManagementThe music industry has undergone strong changes in relation to its production, distribution and consumption habits, due to the exponential development of new technologies, namely streaming platforms. The fact that sales from physical copies continue to decline significantly made it mandatory for this industry to reinvent itself by introducing music streaming services as a key part of the development of its business. This study aims to understand the factors that influence the consumption of music through streaming platforms studying, particularly, the intention to purchase a paid version of a music streaming service and to recommend it. Therefore, an extension of the UTAUT2 model (version of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology, applied to the consumer side) was created. An online survey was used to collect data from 324 music streaming services users and the framework was tested using structural equation modelling (SEM). It also included in-depth semi-structured interviews in order to draw conclusions about the profile of the new music consumer. Our findings verify that habit, performance expectancy and price value play the most important role in influencing the intention to use a paid music streaming service. The intention to recommend these services was also confirmed. With this analysis, centred in UTAUT2 theory, we contribute with new insights about music streaming services consumer behaviour, providing several theoretical and practical implications to music streaming services providers
Understanding the effect of fashion involvement in the motivations to interact with a brand in social media applied to MANGO
Nowadays, around 3,000 billion textile and garment industry new companies are entering the market daily (FashionUnited, 2016), which makes it a very competitive market. Nonetheless, fashion has changed. It his evident, that the industry has gone through a transformation because of social media and this shift is occurring because major fashion houses start to understand the real influence of social networking sites on the customer (Huffpost, 2017).
Thus, the current research used ‘fashion involvement’, ‘motivations for using social media’ and ‘purchase intention’ as the three constructs of study. The objective is to understand whether fashion involvement influences the motivations to interact with a brand in social media and then the impact it might have on purchase intention, in the specific case of the brand Mango in the Portuguese market, due to personal involvement with the brand and current limitations of the brand in the online environment.
In terms of methodology, this dissertation is divided in an exploratory and quantitative study. An online, structured and self-administrative questionnaire was performed, resulting in 265 valid responses.
The main finding is that people mainly perceived Mangos’ social media platforms as entertainment and information seeking platforms, which is positively influenced by the involvement of consumers with the brand.
Lastly, this thesis added significant information in the research about fashion industry both academic and managerial, however some implications for future research are then identified. No entanto o mercado mudou.
