Simulation Modeling and Analysis of Complex Port Operations with Multimodal Transportation

    Get PDF
AbstractWorld trade has been increasing dramatically in the past two decades, and as a result containers exchange has grown significantly. Accordingly, container terminals are expanding to meet this increase and new container ports have opened. Ports with one or more container terminals are considered complex systems in which many resources, entities and transporters interact to achieve the objective of safely moving containers delivered by ships inland as well as loading containers delivered by trucks and rail onto ships. Ports with multimodal transportation systems are in particular complex as they typically operate with ships arriving to one or more terminals, multiple quay cranes, rubber tyred gantry cranes, trains, and trucks delivering containers of different types to terminals. With several resources of different types working and interacting, the system can be so complex that it is not easy to predict the behavior of the system and its performance metrics without the use of simulation. In this paper, a generic discrete-event simulation that models port operations with different resource types including security gates, space, rubber tyred gantry cranes, trains, quay cranes, and arriving and departing ships, trucks, and trains is presented. The analysis will entail studying various scenarios motivated by changes in different inputs to measure their impact on the outputs that include throughput, resource utilization and waiting times

Self-translation: a faithful rendition or a rewriting process? Haikal’s Autumn of Fury as an example

    Get PDF
This study aims to investigate if self-translation is a true interpretation of a Source Text (ST) into a Target Text (TT), or if it is in fact a rewriting process. The study examines Haikal’s self-translation of a book titled ‘Autumn of Fury: The Assassination of Sadat’. This self-translation is used as an example due to the modifications and changes made by Haikal, and examines to what extent the translator is faithful to his ST (English version). For the purpose of this study, fifteen examples have been selected from Haikal's version of Autumn of Fury. They are then analysed and compared to their Arabic translations (TT), and the differences are highlighted and discussed. The selected examples include words, phrases, sentences, and sometimes whole paragraphs. The study relies on Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as a theoretical framework to uncover the hidden ideologies and attitudes behind the modification, manipulation, or rewriting of the ST into Arabic. These examples are analysed from linguistic, political and ideological perspectives. The study finds that Haikal’s self-translation of Autumn of Fury into Arabic was actually a rewriting process rather than a translation process, and that a new book is almost recreated out of the original

Our work aims to study nearly ν-Lindelöf (briefly. nν-Lindelöf) space in generalized topological spaces. Moreover, some mappings and decompositions of continuity are studied. The main result that we obtained on is the effect of (δ,δ’)-continuous function on nν-Lindelöf space

Barriers for blood donation in non-blood donor: a qualitaive study

    Get PDF
Donating blood is a noble act that serves a humanitarian cause. This study aims to explore the barriers from donating blood amongst non-donors. Four focus group discussions (FGD) were conducted amongst non-blood donors. The discussions were carried out in the local language, and the verbatim was translated into English. Most of the participants were aware of the importance of donating blood to save other people. Fear is the most factors that hinders them from becoming a blood donor. The participants recommended the use of advertisements that could stir an emotional reaction. Blood banks should hence organise more blood donation campaigns to spread the awareness in the community. Keywords: awareness; blood donation; blood bank; focus group discussioneISSN: 2398-4287 © 2019. Household Refuse Management Behavior among Urban Residents

    Get PDF
A household refuse management system is a system to manage refuse treatment, including collection, transportation, and treatment of the unwanted household item. Therefore, this study tries to understand the nature of each household's behavior regarding the refused item they have generated and their behavior towards managing it. Thus, the primary purpose of this study is to examine the factors that affect the success of the refuse management model among the residents of the urban household concerning their daily own household items.Using a questionnaire-based survey with a purposive sampling technique, the data was then submitted to SPSS for further analysis. Poor Quality of Sleep and its Relationship with Depression in First Year Medical Students.

    Get PDF
Introduction: High incidence of depression has been reported in undergraduate medical students. Sleep disturbance has been associated with depressive symptoms and higher body mass index (BMI). This study evaluated the relationship between sleep disturbance measured by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index ( PSQI) and Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) with BMI and depression measured by Beck Depression Inventory (BDI)  in 1st year  medical students. Method: Following Institutional Ethics Committee approval, 1st year medical students who volunteered for study and gave written informed consent (n=73) were administered PSQI, ESS & BDI questionnaires after seven months of admission. Height and weight were measured by standard method. Scores of PSQI, BDI and BMI were calculated and their interrelationship was measured statically.  Results: Poor quality of sleep (PSQI score greater or equal to five) and depression (BDI score eleven or greater) was seen in majority of students (64 and 60 % respectively). BMI was not significantly correlated with PSQI, ESS or BDI scores .There was significant positive correlation between PSQI and BDI (Pearson correlation, r = 0.410, P < 0.001), higher the BDI scores higher the PSQI scores. Conclusions: Poor sleep quality and depressive symptoms were observed in majority of 1st year medical students. Sleep quality and depressive symptoms were interrelated. Prevention and treatment strategies should target sleep as a factor that can potentially influence the development and course of Depression leading to poor academic performance. There is an urgent need to address this issue. Keywords: PSQI, BDI, Medical students, college students, adolescent health, freshman, freshers

Online Purchase Environment Using Blockchain-Based Solutions: : An Acceptance of Online Grocer

    Get PDF
The process of gaining and maintaining customer trust has grown more complex as e-commerce goes inescapably online. Consumers now expect complete transparency on what they buy through an integrated and transparent purchasing pipeline because they can access various options. However, not all online payment options are secure and reliable for customers, particularly those who live in cities and engage with online grocery purchases on a daily basis. Current businesses can only gain their clients' trust if they provide answers to queries about how safe, accurate, and transparent an online purchase can be. Failure to do that will frequently result in losing their business. According to previous studies, nearly half of consumers who switch brands do so because they no longer trust the brand. The blockchain concept is revolutionary because it allows all parties to write, read, share, and use the same information in the most secure ways possible in real-time. There is a shared source of information since the data on a blockchain is dispersed among all users. Although everything is transparent, everyone engaged still has a say in who sees what. Therefore, the primary goal of the research is to examine the variables affecting the adoption of the blockchain system among present e-commerce customers for online grocers in an urban area. The primary goal is to establish a blockchain-based solution model for implementing metropolitan area distribution networks for consumer grocery. The target responders are residents of the Klang Valley who are frequent online shoppers and have completed at least one online transaction. A set of questionnaires was created to collect data from the respondents, as this research was conducted using quantitative methodologies. Through an online poll, a total of 384 responses were gathered. SPSS software was used to analyse the survey data. The dependent variable is highly impacted by the independent variables' namely accuracy, online payment, and cybersecurity

ENGLISH REDUPLICATION IN THE MALAYSIAN CONTEXT

Reduplication is playful in certain languages while informative in others. The recent emergence of the form together-gather, single-mingle, calling-calling and laterlater brings forth the need to examine where and how the form emerged. The social contact Malaysians achieve is a vocabulary enriching mechanism just as how English has some 900,000 words. Also the catchy-ness of reduplicated words, for businesses' branding holds a key to an economically successful country. Also, this paper studies the feasibility of reduplicating rules, in particular of the English language and Bahasa
