Elizabeth Vesey and the Art of Educating Oneself, Between London and Lucan
A 1926 publication describes the Library of Mrs. Elizabeth Vesey (1715- 1791), a Bluestocking and the wife, by second marriage, of Agmondisham Vesey, a member of the Irish Parliament. The essay examines the books that refer to the cultural background and critical abilities of an Irish literary lady who transmitted but a small record of her literary competence to posterity. The excursus points to her historical, philosophical, and theological formation as the daughter of the Bishop of Ossory, besides her acquaintance with foreign literatures (most prominently the Italian one) and her ideological involvement with the question of the American colonies that she only briefly hints at in a letter to her friend Mrs. Montague in order not to trespass the borders of the public sphere. Vesey’s portrait would be mostly imperfect if this collection was ignored.
Memory and Performance in Dublin’s Art Scenario: Brian O’Doherty and Sebastian Barry
In 2008 Brian O’Doherty buried his alter ego, Patrick Ireland, in Dublin, as a consequence
of peace having been restored in Northern Ireland. “We are burying hate”,
said the New York artist of Irish origin, “it’s not often you get the chance to do that”.
With Patrick’s masked effigy lain in a coffin the memory of past tragic times was spectacularized,
and paved the way to a more luminous future. In the previous summer the
staging of Sebastian Barry’s The Pride of Parnell Street focuses on a episode of domestic
violence by a Dublin fellow on the occasion of “Italia ’90” world cup. By staging the
anxieties and confronting the fears of the two protagonists, man and wife, who have
since then lived separately, in a one-to-one dialogue disguised as a monologue, both
the woman and the man end up recovering one’s freedom and one’s pride, respectively.
Through the analysis of O’Doherty’s and Barry’s performance, the essay shows how the
contemporary artistic and multicultural global ferments, and the new ethnic dimension
since the rising of the Celtic Tiger have brought changes to the social texture of a
nation marred by forced emigration. Also, a 2007 film directed by John Carney, Once,
proposes, through the story of an Irish Guy and a Czech migrant Girl, a social cross
section that could work in Dublin as well as, thanks to the new global cultural flows, in
any other of today’s ethnoscapes and ideoscapes
Neisseria meningitidis rifampicin resistant strains: analysis of protein differentially expressed
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Several mutations have been described as responsible for rifampicin resistance in <it>Neisseria meningitidis</it>. However, the intriguing question on why these strains are so rare remains open. The aim of this study was to investigate the protein content and to identify differential expression in specific proteins in two rifampicin resistant and one susceptible meningococci using two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) combined with mass spectrometry.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In our experimental conditions, able to resolve soluble proteins with an isoelectric point between 4 and 7, twenty-three proteins have been found differentially expressed in the two resistant strains compared to the susceptible. Some of them, involved in the main metabolic pathways, showed an increased expression, mainly in the catabolism of pyruvate and in the tricarboxylic acid cycle. A decreased expression of proteins belonging to gene regulation and to those involved in the folding of polypeptides has also been observed. 2-DE analysis showed the presence of four proteins displaying a shift in their isoelectric point in both resistant strains, confirmed by the presence of amino acid changes in the sequence analysis, absent in the susceptible.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The analysis of differentially expressed proteins suggests that an intricate series of events occurs in <it>N. meningitidis </it>rifampicin resistant strains and the results here reported may be considered a starting point in understanding their decreased invasion capacity. In fact, they support the hypothesis that the presence of more than one protein differentially expressed, having a role in the metabolism of the meningococcus, influences its ability to infect and to spread in the population. Different reports have described and discussed how a drug resistant pathogen shows a high biological cost for survival and that may also explain why, for some pathogens, the rate of resistant organisms is relatively low considering the widespread use of a particular drug. This seems the case of rifampicin resistant meningococci.</p
VOICE: Value-of-Information for Compute Continuum Ecosystems
The increasing ubiquity of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices has led to a
massive flow of data, often processed in distant and costly Cloud
facilities. Emerging methodologies, such as Fog and Edge Computing, pursue
to process data closer to its origin, thereby reducing the need for
extensive use of Cloud solutions. The {"}Compute Continuum{"} (CC), which
encompasses these paradigms, rises as an opportunity for an efficient
deployment and adoption of innovative services ranging from eHealth to
virtual reality. However, the decentralized nature of CC presents
challenges, especially for orchestration tools conventionally designed for
centralized scenarios. Tackling these challenges, we introduce VOICE, a
cutting-edge platform designed for service management in CC ecosystems.
Thanks to a Value of Information (VoI)-based technique that emphasizes the
significance of data filtering, VOICE supports dynamic service components
allocation throughout the continuum. To evaluate the choice of VoI as
enabling-technology for VOICE, we leverage Computational Intelligence (CI)
approaches and compare it with more popular strategies (e.g. maximization
of Processing Ratio). Final results show how VoI can be a valuable proposal
to optimize the usage of resource scarcity that characterizes CC
environments
Prioritizing quantitative trait loci for root system architecture in tetraploid wheat
Optimization of root system architecture (RSA) traits is an important objective for modern wheat breeding. Linkage and association mapping for RSA in two recombinant inbred line populations and one association mapping panel of 183 elite durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum Desf.) accessions evaluated as seedlings grown on filter paper/polycarbonate screening plates revealed 20 clusters of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for root length and number, as well as 30 QTLs for root growth angle (RGA). Divergent RGA phenotypes observed by seminal root screening were validated by root phenotyping of field-grown adult plants. QTLs were mapped on a high-density tetraploid consensus map based on transcript-Associated Illumina 90K single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) developed for bread and durum wheat, thus allowing for an accurate cross-referencing of RSA QTLs between durum and bread wheat. Among the main QTL clusters for root length and number highlighted in this study, 15 overlapped with QTLs for multiple RSA traits reported in bread wheat, while out of 30 QTLs for RGA, only six showed co-location with previously reported QTLs in wheat. Based on their relative additive effects/significance, allelic distribution in the association mapping panel, and co-location with QTLs for grain weight and grain yield, the RSA QTLs have been prioritized in terms of breeding value. Three major QTL clusters for root length and number (RSA-QTL-cluster-5#, RSA-QTL-cluster-6#, and RSA-QTL-cluster-12#) and nine RGA QTL clusters (QRGA.ubo-2A.1, QRGA.ubo-2A.3, QRGA.ubo-2B.2/2B.3, QRGA.ubo-4B.4, QRGA.ubo-6A.1, QRGA.ubo-6A.2, QRGA.ubo-7A.1, QRGA.ubo-7A.2, and QRGA.ubo-7B) appear particularly valuable for further characterization towards a possible implementation of breeding applications in marker-Assisted selection and/or cloning of the causal genes underlying the QTLs

EXPERIENCIADE UN EQUIPO DE SALUD MENTALCOMUNITARIO EN LA ASISTENCIA DE FAMILIAS QUE CONVIVEN CON LA DEPRESIÓN
Depression continues to increase progressively in society and affects not only an individual but also
his family, and this fact makes this issue turn from a primary level of attention to a priority one. Our objective was
to get to know how the members of an intra-discipline community team describe their experiences by working with
families that live in an environment of depression.Weused the ethnographic method and in order to obtain data we
used a form containing and open question followed by a graph.Wemade the following cultural categories: Describing
what is found, Signaling the amount of time the family takes to perceive the signs of people with the mental
sickness, Describing their actions, Commenting on the interaction with the family, and as a cultural theme:
Integrating a team regardless of the differences. According to the study, although the members might get a job in
an intra-disciplinary team, the experience is described according to the vision or function of each member.
Nevertheless, they are able to obtain global information about the patient in a climate of mutual respect considering
the complementary of knowledge.
