How far from Just-in-time are Portuguese firms? A survey of its progress and perception.

As competition increases, Just-in-Time (JIT) manufacturing becomes an important issue in Portuguese industry. After a brief review of its history, elements, advantages and limitations, this paper presents the results of a postal questionnaire survey about JIT system sent to a sample of manufacturing firms in Portugal, with the aim of determining the degree of development, perception and status of JIT production in Portuguese industries. The findings suggest that the surveyed firms have a basic JIT perspective: a tool to reduce inventories, to increase quality and to eliminate waste. Num contexto em que os alunos de 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico dispunham de computadores portáteis (os Magalhães) decidimos levar a cabo um estudo de caso com caraterísticas etnográficas, no ano letivo de 2009/2010, na sala de aula de um professor deste ciclo de ensino, habitual utilizador das TIC, com o objetivo de tentar inferir sobre os reflexos da integração educativa das TIC, não só nos resultados escolares dos alunos, mas também no desenvolvimento das suas competências tecnológicas. O sucesso dos resultados obtidos pelos alunos permite-nos pensar que deviam ser criadas condições de acesso a computadores de baixo custo para os alunos cujos professores desejassem desenvolver um trabalho assíduo e regular de utilização didática das tecnologias. Esta recomendação torna-se particularmente pertinente para os alunos pertencentes a agregados familiares mais desfavorecidos onde este pequeno computador é, muitas vezes, o único meio de contribuir para que o fosso digital não se agrave.In a context where Primary School students had their own laptops (Magalhães) we decided to develop a case study with ethnographic characteristics, throughout the 2009/2010 school year, in the classroom of a teacher who was a usual user of ICT with his pupils, in order to understand the effects of the educational integration of ICT, not only in the students’ school results, but also in the development of their technological skills. The successful results obtained by the students allow us to think the government should promote access to low-cost computers for students whose teachers want to develop a regular didactic work with the use of technology. This recommendation is particularly relevant for students belonging to disadvantaged families where this small computer is often the only mean to prevent a worst digital divide

Este artigo surge na sequência de um estudo de caso com caráter etnográfico efetuado numa sala de 1.º Ciclo de Ensino Básico (1.º CEB). O professor da turma em estudo é um convicto utilizador das TIC com os seus alunos porque acredita na melhoria das suas aprendizagens quando alia uma metodologia orientada para projetos à utilização das Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC). Um dos projetos desenvolvidos ao longo do ano letivo foi um livro coletivo com participação de todos os alunos e onde as TIC desempenharam papéis relevantes e diversificados em todo o processo de trabalho. Neste artigo pretendemos refletir sobre este projeto, sobre o modo como foi organizado, como nele foram integradas as TIC e sobre o desenvolvimento de competências dos alunos

Alterações provocadas pelo Internet@Eb1: estudo de caso num agrupamento de Setúbal

O contexto inovador do programa “Acompanhamento da Utilização Educativa da Internet nas Escolas Públicas do 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico”, as múltiplas vicissi-tudes pelas quais passou e o facto de contar já com quatro anos de trabalho efecti-vo nas escolas, parecem constituir condições interessantes para levar a cabo um estudo que nos permita perceber se existem alterações no modo como os professo-res daquele nível de ensino integram as TIC na suas práticas lectivas. Para atingir estes objectivos procurou-se, numa primeira fase, analisar a documen-tação produzida por todos os intervenientes na perspectiva de perceber como o programa foi organizado e que sucesso obteve. Numa segunda fase o estudo cen-tra-se num Agrupamento de Escolas e tem como objectivo perceber as percepções dos intervenientes sobre o impacte do programa junto daquela comunidade.The innovative context of the program "Acompanhamento da Utilização Educativa da Internet nas Escolas Públicas do 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico", the multiple vicis-situdes it went through and the fact of already counting four years of effective work in schools seem to constitute interesting conditions to develop a study that allows to perceive if there are changes in the way primary school teachers inte-grate ICT in their practice. To reach these goals we tried, at first, to analyse the documentation produced by all the intervening parties, in the perspective of understanding how the program was organised and the success it obtained. Hydrochemistry of mediterranean temporary ponds and associated groundwater in SW Portugal

Under the project LIFE Charcos we aim to understand the influence of groundwater in the water balance and hydrochemistry of Mediterranean Temporary Ponds, located in Costa Sudoeste in Portugal, to explain the variations observed in biodiversity between ponds. This paper represents a first step for establishing a relationship between the chemical composition of the ponds waters and the chemical composition of its associated groundwater. Most of the sampled waters are circum-neutral with very low mineralization (TDS < 1000 mg/L) and show varied composition. In the north of the Costa Sudoeste the ponds waters are mostly of sodium-chloride type and have mixed composition at south. During the ongoing project surface water and groundwater samples will continue to be collected and results will be updated. He and Ne isotopic ratios along the Terceira Rift: implications for the Azores mantle source

Neste trabalho foram obtidas razões isotópicas de He e Ne em fenocristais de olivina separados a partir de lavas amostradas no arquipélago dos Açores e, em particular, ao longo da fronteira de placas designada por Rift da Terceira. Nele são apresentados os primeiros dados isotópicos de Ne obtidos para lavas basálticas das ilhas de S. Miguel, da Graciosa e do Faial. De igual modo, merecem destaque os dados de gases nobres obtidos para lavas submarinas amostradas a 3000 m de profundidade na Bacia Hirondelle Sul. Estas últimas permitem reconhecer a extensão de uma fonte mantélica relativamente primitiva até uma zona próxima da ilha de S. Miguel. Ao contrário da ilha Terceira, cujas razões isotópicas de He e Ne podem ser justificadas por mistura entre uma componente mantélica primitiva e uma componente do tipo MORB, as lavas da bacia Hirondelle permitem considerar a existência de um componente reciclado

Cartas para Almeida Garrett : lembranças do exílio

The purpose of this paper is to analyse and presente private letters received by the writer João Baptista de Almeida Garrett in the period in wich he was in exile. They are a set of 25 letters, aproximately, written by his mother, Family and friends in a troubled momento of the history of Portugal. I chose three moments of Garrett’s exile. The first occured between the years 1823 and 1826, it was a time of crises, where the most radical liberals are fleeing and secret societes are dissolved, The second occured between the years of 1828 and 1832, because of the return of D. Miguel to Portugal and the probable political hardening against the liberals. The third, wich I classify as «exile», but had diferente characteristics from the others, occured between the year of 1834 and 1836. In that period Garrett was removed from Portugal, wich was devastated by a civil war, under the pretext of composing a diplomatic mission. All the letters chosen are part of the literary collection located in the reserved sector of the University Library of Coimbra
