Conditions for teacher leadership and professional development in challenging circumstances

    Get PDF
This chapter reports on findings from a 3-year funded research project aimed at examining conditions for teacher leadership in challenging circumstances. A mixed-method research design was devised including three phases of data collection: a national survey (phase 1), focus groups with teachers and students and semi-structured interviews with principals (phase 2); and the development and evaluation of a professional development course in 5 schools (phase 3). This chapter reports on findings from the first phase of data collection through an online questionnaire administered nationwide between February and May 2012 (N= 2702). In general, ambiguity and ambivalence in teachers’ views and perceptions of leadership emerged from the data namely in regard to the encouragement they get to make decisions and to be involved in projects at school as well as to exercise leadership at the department level. Implications of the findings are discussed.CIEC – Research Centre on Child Studies, IE, UMinho (FCT R&D unit 317), PortugalNational Funds through the FCT (Foundation for Science and Technology) and co-financed by European Regional Development Funds (FEDER) through the Competitiveness and Internationalization Operational Program (POCI) with the reference POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007562info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Impact assessment of the European Structural Funds in Andalusia: 2000 to 2006

    Get PDF
After two decades during which the region of Andalusia has been receiving financing from the European Structural Funds with the objective of developing, through these investments, the economic sectors that can boost economic growth in the region, this paper proposes an analysis that will reveal the economic impact of the European funds obtained by Andalusia during the period 2000 to 2006. With this purpose, the Social Accounting Matrix for Andalusia in year 2005 and a linear multipliers model are used. This model will help identify the sectors that benefit the most from the transfer of income provided by these funds, and to show how these exogenous injections bring about an impact on the endogenous accounts. The results underscore the significant contribution of the European funds to the growth of the region during the period analysed (2000 to 2006).JRC.J.4-Agriculture and Life Sciences in the Econom

    Get PDF

Presently, new patterns of food consumption associated to the so-called organic foods have been detected. The spread of post-materialist values, ecological awareness, environmental conservation, as well as the recent economic crisis that has impacted most European countries have fostered the emergence of new forms of consumption of organic products based on a model of sustainable production. In this context, the production and consumption of organic vegetables and fruits proves to be a strategy for quality in food consumption and also as a way of saving in the acquisition of fresh and healthy foods. The following scientific contribution makes a comparative descriptive statistical study of the sociodemographic characteristics of the different types of consumers of organic fruits and vegetables in Spain and Portugal. A description of the pro-environment practices in this typology of consumers is also shown. We resort to a quantitative strategy through the use of data that belongs to the ISSP Environment (2010, Portugal) and ISSP (2010, Spain) surveys. The technique used is the bivariate analysis and the tree segmentation analysis through the CHAID algorithm. The main results show the influence of education, income and environment in the characterization of the different types of consumers of organic fruits and vegetables in Spain and Portugal

Biogeochemistry of plane trees as a tool to detect atmospheric pollution

    Get PDF
The plane tree, which is a valuable tool to detect atmospheric pollution, is one of the most common trees in European cities. Soil and leaf samplings were carried out in Barcelona and its environs (NE Spain) to establish the soil-plant relationship. Dry and ashed leaves and soils were analyzed by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP/OES) at the ACTLABS laboratories in Ontario, Canada. Given that diesel is the main fuel used in vehicles in Europe, we sought to establish the role of diesel in atmospheric pollution. Diesel samples were obtained from service stations and analyzed after preconcentration using ICP/MS at the geochemistry laboratories of the University of Barcelona. The average content of diesel oil shows high values of Pb, Cu, Cr, Ag, Cd and Mn. High values of Pb, Cu, Au, Hg and Sb in leaves and soils were detected downtown and along main roads outside the city, whereas low levels of these elements were observed in rural areas.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Standard methods for fungal brood disease research

    Get PDF
Chalkbrood and stonebrood are two fungal diseases associated with honey bee brood. Chalkbrood, caused by Ascosphaera apis, is a common and widespread disease that can result in severe reduction of emerging worker bees and thus overall colony productivity. Stonebrood is caused by Aspergillus spp. that are rarely observed, so the impact on colony health is not very well understood. A major concern with the presence of Aspergillus in honey bees is the production of airborne conidia, which can lead to allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, pulmonary aspergilloma, or even invasive aspergillosis in lung tissues upon inhalation by humans. In the current chapter we describe the honey bee disease symptoms of these fungal pathogens. In addition, we provide research methodologies and protocols for isolating and culturing, in vivo and in vitro assays that are commonly used to study these host pathogen interactions. We give guidelines on the preferred methods used in current research and the application of molecular techniques. We have added photographs, drawings and illustrations to assist bee-extension personnel and bee scientists in the control of these two diseases.
