This study examined online faculty in dental hygiene and nursing baccalaureate degree completion programs and their experiences with online education in the area of administrative support. The purpose of this study was to investigate the types of administrative support systems needed for dental hygiene and nursing faculty to teach in baccalaureate degree completion programs in New York State, which offer more than 50% of their curriculum online. The objective of this study was to provide leaders in institutions of higher learning with insight and aid in reaching the goal of improving dental hygiene and nursing online programs. A total of 17 accredited baccalaureate degree completion programs in New York State (15 nursing and two dental hygiene) were included in this study. Faculty members represented in this study were female (n=7), mostly at the assistant professor rank (n=6), teaching in academia for a range of years of one to ten years of online teaching experience, and mostly over 50 years of age. The data revealed that all the faculty respondents received online course development training and reported having adequate support services in the form of technology assistance/help desk. Yet, three respondents felt they needed more training with course management tools. Additionally, faculty with 11+ years in academia and teaching online 4 years or more (n=4) felt there is a lack of support concerning policy and standardization, property rights and course ownership. There were concerns about lack of recognition of greater workload and time commitment for online teaching at their institution. Examining the impact of administrative support for dental hygiene and nursing online faculty can enable administrators to meet the needs of online faculty and increase teaching effectiveness in the online learning environment. Moreover, understanding the challenges that online faculty face with faculty incentives for online teaching, workload valued for tenure and additional compensation, policy that addresses intellectual property rights and course ownership, and increased faculty training and professional development with technology tools for online course development will enable institutions of higher education to develop strategies for continuous administrative support and ultimately improve online teaching and learning

The aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico unveiled for many the colonial power of the U.S. in Puerto Rico. The natural disaster became a financial and public health problem in part due to laws that limit the scope of actions that Puerto Rico has in response to emergencies. This thesis analyses the media coverage following the natural disaster in September 2017 up to the local elections in January 2020. Using a Critical Discourse Analysis approach and postcolonial theory, this study examines colonial discourse in two major newspapers one in the United States (USA Today) and one in Puerto Rico (El Nuevo Dia). By exploring the intersection between postcolonial and communication studies, this thesis aims to demonstrate how the newspapers reflects and reinforces power imbalances between the US-PR. This study situates the texts within the broader social structures and power relations at play. Finally, this thesis provides examples of resistance and anticolonial sentiments that emerged and analyzes their portrayal in the news media outlets.Includes bibliographical references

Clues to the responsible mechanisms may lie with the discovery of molecular signatures of stress, some of which include alterations to an individual's somatic genome. Here, using genome sequences from 11,670 women, we observed a highly significant association between a stress-related disease, major depression, and the amount of mtDNA (p = 9.00 x 10(-42), odds ratio 1.33 [95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.29-1.37]) and telomere length (p = 2.84 x 10(-14), odds ratio 0.85 [95% CI = 0.81-0.89]). While both telomere length and mtDNA amount were associated with adverse life events, conditional regression analyses showed the molecular changes were contingent on the depressed state. We tested this hypothesis with experiments in mice, demonstrating that stress causes both molecular changes, which are partly reversible and can be elicited by the administration of corticosterone. Together, these results demonstrate that changes in the amount of mtDNA and telomere length are consequences of stress and entering a depressed state. These findings identify increased amounts of mtDNA as a molecular marker of MD and have important implications for understanding how stress causes the disease.Wellcome Trust WT090532/Z/09/Z WT083573/Z/07/Z WT089269/Z/09/Z WT097307Agency of Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) Graduate AcademyNational Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and King's College Londo

BackgroundBixin or annatto is a commercially important natural orange-red pigment derived from lycopene that is produced and stored in seeds of Bixa orellana L. An enzymatic pathway for bixin biosynthesis was inferred from homology of putative proteins encoded by differentially expressed seed cDNAs. Some activities were later validated in a heterologous system. Nevertheless, much of the pathway remains to be clarified. For example, it is essential to identify the methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) and carotenoid pathways genes.ResultsIn order to investigate the MEP, carotenoid, and bixin pathways genes, total RNA from young leaves and two different developmental stages of seeds from B. orellana were used for the construction of indexed mRNA libraries, sequenced on the Illumina HiSeq 2500 platform and assembled de novo using Velvet, CLC Genomics Workbench and CAP3 software. A total of 52,549 contigs were obtained with average length of 1,924 bp. Two phylogenetic analyses of inferred proteins, in one case encoded by thirteen general, single-copy cDNAs, in the other from carotenoid and MEP cDNAs, indicated that B. orellana is closely related to sister Malvales species cacao and cotton. Using homology, we identified 7 and 14 core gene products from the MEP and carotenoid pathways, respectively. Surprisingly, previously defined bixin pathway cDNAs were not present in our transcriptome. Here we propose a new set of gene products involved in bixin pathway.ConclusionThe identification and qRT-PCR quantification of cDNAs involved in annatto production suggest a hypothetical model for bixin biosynthesis that involve coordinated activation of some MEP, carotenoid and bixin pathway genes. These findings provide a better understanding of the mechanisms regulating these pathways and will facilitate the genetic improvement of B. orellana
