Analytical possibilities of Putrescine and Cadaverine enzymatic colorimetric determination in tuna based on diamine oxidase: A critical study of the use of ABTS

    Get PDF
The joint determination of putrescine (Put) and cadaverine (Cad) in the presence of other biogenic amines is studied using their enzymatic reaction with diamine oxidase (DAO). Three alternative methods are studied based on the intrinsic colorimetric properties of DAO or horseradish peroxidase (HRP), and the use of 2, 2'-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS) colorimetric reagent, respectively. In this last case an in-depth study is carried out in order to explain and solve some drawbacks usually associated with the use of this reagent (especially interferences, interaction with enzymes and instability), and to propose new analytical methodologies which this reagent allows to achieve (transient signal and the use of the violet species). Finally, the method has been applied to Put + Cad determination in a tuna sample without interference of other biogenic amines. The result has been compared with that obtained using a method based on HPLC-MS, which has allowed the new methodology to be validated

Making Movidas: Cultivating Leadership Through Conocimiento In An Undergraduate Student Retreat

    Get PDF
This educational case study examines the efforts of one Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) to counter deficit narratives and provide institutional as well as interpersonal supports for Latinx student success through a Student Leadership Retreat. We consider these activities and students’ experiences therein through the lenses of Latinx leadership and Gloria Anzaldúa’s notion of conocimiento. To do so, we rely on established methods in Chicanx Studies that center the voices of participants and communities to foreground emic systems of knowledge and activity qualitatively. Specifically, we examined students’ experiences in programming undergirded by conocimiento (iterative and dialogic understanding of ourselves and others), cariño (care for self and others), and confianza (trust) in contrast to more traditionally individualistic, competitive, and transactional arrangements within higher education

Promoting Social Media Dissemination of Digital Images Through CBR-Based Tag Recommendation

    Get PDF
Multimedia content has become an essential tool to share knowledge, sell products or disseminate messages. Some social networks use multimedia content to promote information and create social communities. In order to increase the impact of the digital content, those images or videos are labeled with different words, denominated tags. In this paper, we propose a recommender system which analyzes multimedia content and suggests tags to maximize its influence in the social community. It implements a Case-Based Reasoning architecture (CBR), which allows to learn from previous tagged content. The system has been evaluated through cross fold validation with a training and validation sets carefully constructed and extracted from Instagram. The results demonstrate that the system can suggest good options to label our image and maximize the influence of the multimedia content

Mathematical modelling of a membrane-less redox flow battery based on immiscible electrolytes

    Get PDF
We present a mathematical model to study the steady-state performance of a membrane-less reversible redox flow battery formed by two immiscible electrolytes that spontaneously form a liquid-liquid system separated by a well defined interface. The model assumes a two-dimensional battery with two coflowing electrolytes and flat electrodes at the channel walls. In this configuration, the analysis of the far downstream solution indicates that the interface remains stable in all the parameter range covered by this study. To simplify the description of the problem, we use the dilute solution theory to decouple the calculation of the velocity and species concentration fields. Once the velocity field is known, we obtain the distribution of the mobile ionic species along with the current and the electric potential field of the flowing electrolyte solution. The numerical integration of the problem provides the variation of the battery current density Iapp with the State of Charge (SoC) for different applied cell voltages Vcell. A detailed analysis of the concentration density plots indicates that the normal operation of the battery is interrupted when reactant depletion is achieved near the negative electrode both during charge and discharge. The effect of the electrolyte flow on the performance of the system is studied by varying the Reynolds, Re and Péclet, Pe, numbers. As expected, the flow velocity only affects the polarization curve in the concentration polarization region, when is well below the equilibrium potential, resulting in limiting current densities that grow with Re......This work has been partially funded by the Spanish Agencia Estatal de Investigación under projects (PID2019-106740RB- I00 and PID2019-108592RB-C41/AEI/10.13039/50110 0 011033), by Grant IND2019/AMB-17273 of the Comunidad de Madrid and by project MFreeB which have received funding from the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program (Grant Agreement No. 726217). Producción CientíficaThree emitting copolyfluorenes, based on 2,7-(9,9-dihexyl)fluorene and different aryl groups (1,4-bencene, PFH-B; 1,4-bencen-1,2,5-thiadiazole PFH-BT; 1,4-naphthalen- 1,2,5-thiadiazole, PFH-NT), showing diverse acceptor character, in different proportions were blended with a polyimide 6FDA-6FpDA to make a series of films. These copolyfluorene-polyimide blends were prepared and characterized in solid state, using several techniques. The fluorescence of conjugated polymers can be used as a tool to understand the formation of the membrane and also to increase permeability and selectivity in comparison to films without fluorescence. The relationship between the intrinsic fluorescence of conjugated polyfluorenes and their gas separation properties has been explored in order to establish the influence of the composition and the nature of the aryl group, in the conjugated polymer, on the gas separation performances. In all cases, a low proportion of copolyfluorenes (< 1%weight) gives better CO2/CH4 permselectivity properties than the original pure polyimide matrix. The best results were found for the samples that contain PFH-NT. This sample gives 25 % increase in the CO2 permeability with 15 % increase in CO2/CH4 selectivity. Finally, the loss of efficiency in conjugation mechanisms of absorption and emission of the samples could be explained on the basis of the π-staking of the polymer chains produced when a certain low percentage of conjugated polymers in the blend is surpassed. When this π- staking starts, gas permeation properties start to decline too.Junta de Castilla y León (programa de apoyo a proyectos de investigación – Ref. VA302U13

Diagnostic criteria and prevalence of mild cognitive impairment in older adults living in the community: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Get PDF
Background: Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a disorder in which the patient presents a cognitive decline, but without negative impact on the activities of daily living. Objective: To carry out a systematic review of published studies that analyzed the prevalence of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) in older adults living in the community, and the criteria used for the diagnosis of this disorder. Methods: A search was carried out in May 2017 using the descriptors: “epidemiology” or “prevalence”, “mild cognitive impairment”, and “community” in the PubMed, PsycInfo, SciELO, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. Two independent researchers extracted and documented the data. We used a random effect model to calculate pooled prevalence of MCI for overall studies and for each subgroup divided by diagnostic criteria. Results: We found initially 1996 articles, and we selected 35 studies. The prevalence of MCI in the selected studies ranged from 0.5% to 41.8%. The overall pooled prevalence of MCI was 17.3% (CI 95%, 13.8-20.8), with significant heterogeneity between estimates (I2 = 99.6%). Discussion: The standardization of the diagnostic criteria for MCI, as well as the tests used in the cognitive evaluation, could allow the comparison between the studies and would be an important step in the researches of this area
