Internet and Consumer behaviour in Travel and Tourism: A European Cross-National Analysis

    Get PDF
The emergence of the internet and the development of ICTs have transformed communications and the marketing of products and services. This paper examines the extent to which the internet has penetrated homes in the various EU countries and how online consumers behave in activities linked to travel and tourism. The years 2007 and 2016 were analysed in order to make a comparison over time of the progression of the internet and ICTs among EU citizens and to examine similarities and differences in behaviour patterns in the field of tourism. This study helps confirm a correlation between digitalisation and ICTs in buying habits for tourism products and services, finding that though digital divides between countries are narrowing over time, this is not the case in the use of ICTs in tourism in particular. Our findings indicate divergent behaviour patterns and trends in online travel and accommodation management and in the way that ICTs are used in the European Union

Application of communication technologies (ICT) within the tourism industry in the European Union

The information and communication technologies (ICT) are revolutionizing the tourism industry. This research note will make a brief diagnosis of the relationships between tourism and ICT in the European context by presenting an index to characterize the digitization of the tourism sector and its comparison with a reference index, which reflects the introduction of the ICT in every country. The proposed indicator will allow us to know the degree of integration of these ICT in EU countries when talking about tourism accommodation reservations. The results indicate divergent behavior patterns in digital accommodation management and in how ICTs are managed, as well as a different perception of trends between different geographical areas of the European Union. From the comparative analysis of the indicators, we can observe that in the South of Europe/Mediterranean area both the tourism integration and ICT are quite commonly below the European results. In other countries like Holland and Spain, the traditional channels are still used despite of their outstanding digitalization. These patterns provide relevant insights for the companies, especially for the tourism agencies, and allow establishing sector needs within the digital field

Lotus tenuis x L. corniculatus interspecific hybridization as a means to breed bloat-safe pastures and gain insight into the genetic control of proanthocyanidin biosynthesis in legumes

Background: Proanthocyanidins (PAs) are secondary metabolites that strongly affect plant quality traits. The concentration and the structure of these metabolites influence the palatability and nutritional value of forage legumes. Hence, modulating PAs in the leaves of forage legumes is of paramount relevance for forage breeders worldwide. The lack of genetic variation in the leaf PA trait within the most important forage species and the difficulties in engineering this pathway via the ectopic expression of regulatory genes, prompted us to pursue alternative strategies to enhance this trait in forage legumes of agronomic interest. The Lotus genus includes forage species which accumulate PAs in edible organs and can thus be used as potential donor parents in breeding programs. Results: We recovered a wild, diploid and PA-rich population of L. corniculatus and crossed with L. tenuis. The former grows in an alkaline-salty area in Spain while the latter is a diploid species, grown extensively in South American pastures, which does not accumulate PAs in the herbage. The resulting interspecific hybrids displayed several traits of outstanding agronomic relevance such as rhizome production, PA levels in edible tissues sufficient to prevent ruminal bloating (around 5 mg of PAs/g DW), biomass production similar to the cultivated parent and potential for adaptability to marginal lands. We show that PA levels correlate with expression levels of the R2R3MYB transcription factor TT2 and, in turn, with those of the key structural genes of the epicatechin and catechin biosynthetic pathways leading to PA biosynthesis. Conclusions: The L. tenuis x L. corniculatus hybrids, reported herein, represent the first example of the introgression of the PA trait in forage legumes to levels known to provide nutritional and health benefits to ruminants. Apart from PAs, the hybrids have additional traits which may prove useful to breed forage legumes with increased persistence and adaptability to marginal conditions. Finally, our study suggests the hybrids and their progeny are an invaluable tool to gain a leap forward in our understanding of the genetic control of PA biosynthesis and tolerance to stresses in legumes.Fil: Escaray, Francisco José. The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/ 10.1007/978-3-319-00846-2_313In this work we present the Concept Oriented Repository (ROC), a system developed for the management of clinical information models, also known as detailed clinical models (DCM). It has been developed to be used in the Electronic Health Record project of the Valencia regional health agency (AVS). The system uses DCMs as a way to define clinical models independently of the healthcare standard chosen by the organization. These definitions create a framework where different actors can come to agreements on which information has to be represented and managed in the project. These concepts can be used later for the definition of technical artifacts (archetypes, templates, forms or message definitions) to be used by AVS information systemsThis work has been funded by Electronic Health History project from Valencia Health Agency (HSEAVS).Boscá Tomás, D.; Marco Ruiz, L.; Moner Cano, D.; Maldonado Segura, JA.; Insa, L.; Robles Viejo, M. Ponencia presentada en: IV Simposio Nacional de Predicción del Instituto Nacional de Meteorología, celebrado en 1999 en MadridEl día 15 de junio de 1992, se produjo en la Comunidad Valenciana una situación de tormentas que afectó a amplias zonas de las tres provincias.

Chiral Hydrogen Bond Environment Providing Unidirectional Rotation in Photoactive Molecular Motors

    Get PDF
Generation of a chiral hydrogen bond environment in efficient molecular photoswitches is proposed as a novel strategy for the design of photoactive molecular motors. Here, the following strategy is used to design a retinal-based motor presenting singular properties: (i) a single excitation wavelength is needed to complete the unidirectional rotation process (360°); (ii) the absence of any thermal step permits the process to take place at low temperatures; and (iii) the ultrafast process permits high rotational frequencies.Ministerio de Economía y CompetitividadMinisterio de Ciencia e InnovaciónUniversidad de Alcal

Gobernanza y calidad educativa en Colombia: reflexiones desde la nueva economía institucional

    Get PDF
This article presents a reflection on the contribution potential of the New Institutional Economy to approach the study of educational systems and their performance. In addition to analyzing the theoretical elements of this approach applied to the educational system and reviewing recent empirical contributions from the literature; The specific problem in Colombia is analyzed to arrive at a study proposal that involves these theoretical elements supported by more realistic assumptions. The use of neoclassical logic to explain performance and limitations from agency theory is questioned, opening the way to the governance approach as an alternative study according to the nature of the organization and management processes of educational systems, especially in the public sector. It concludes in favor of the potential of the institutions and the contractual approach to approach the study of educational systems, despite the possible measurement problems that may be faced. Thus, the various forms of organization of education in the public sector and their hierarchical nature and the analysis of transaction costs take on importance beyond the orthodox analysis of production costs.
