    Effects of somatic cell score on milk yield and mid-infrared predicted composition and technological traits of Brown Swiss, Holstein Friesian, and Simmental cattle breeds

    High milk somatic cell count (SCC) influences milk production and quality; however, very little is known about the effect of low SCC on milk quality, especially in terms of mineral content and coagulation properties. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the effects of somatic cell score (SCS), calculated as log2(SCC/100) + 3, on milk yield, composition (fat, crude protein, casein, lactose, milk urea nitrogen, protein fractions, and mineral contents), and coagulation properties of Brown Swiss, Holstein Friesian, and Simmental cows from multibreed herds. Milk composition and coagulation traits were predicted using mid-infrared spectroscopy. The data set comprised 95,591 observations of 6,940 cows in 313 multibreed herds, collected from January 2011 to December 2017. Observations were divided into 8 classes based on SCS. Statistical analysis was performed using a linear mixed model, which included breed, parity, stage of lactation, SCS class, and their interactions as fixed effects, and herd test day, cow, and residual as random effects. The probability that cows experienced SCS > 4.00 at 30 ± 5, 60 ± 5, or 90 ± 5 d after the observation test day was calculated for each SCS class, and odds ratios to the reference class (-1.00 4.00). Moreover, cows with SCS lower than -1.00 on a test day were about 7 times more likely to present high SCS within the following 90 ± 5 d than cows with SCS between -1.00 and 0.00. Breeds responded similarly to the increase of SCS, but the overall loss of fat and crude protein yields, and several minerals among Holstein Friesian were lower with increasing SCS. The best milk yield and quality were observed between SCS 0.00 and 1.00, but milk quality of Holstein Friesians started to decrease at lower SCS compared with milk quality of Brown Swiss and Simmental cows. Results suggest a breed-dependent optimum of SCS, and highlighted that very low SCS can be an indicator of udder health problems and, thus, may be used for early detection of mastitis

    Mitochondrial DNA reveals genetic structuring of <i>Pinna nobilis</i> across the Mediterranean Sea

    Pinna nobilis is the largest endemic Mediterranean marine bivalve. During past centuries, various human activities have promoted the regression of its populations. As a consequence of stringent standards of protection, demographic expansions are currently reported in many sites. The aim of this study was to provide the first large broad-scale insight into the genetic variability of P. nobilis in the area that encompasses the western Mediterranean, Ionian Sea, and Adriatic Sea marine ecoregions. To accomplish this objective twenty-five populations from this area were surveyed using two mitochondrial DNA markers (COI and 16S). Our dataset was then merged with those obtained in other studies for the Aegean and Tunisian populations (eastern Mediterranean), and statistical analyses (Bayesian model-based clustering, median-joining network, AMOVA, mismatch distribution, Tajima’s and Fu’s neutrality tests and Bayesian skyline plots) were performed. The results revealed genetic divergence among three distinguishable areas: (1) western Mediterranean and Ionian Sea; (2) Adriatic Sea; and (3) Aegean Sea and Tunisian coastal areas. From a conservational point of view, populations from the three genetically divergent groups found may be considered as different management units

    APPLICATION OF THE HABITAT FISH BIOLOGICAL INDEX (HFBI) FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE ECOLOGICAL STATUS OF PO DELTA LAGOONS (ITALY)

    Fish fauna is one of the biological quality elements useful for assessing the ecological status of European transitional water bodies, for the purposes of applying the Water Framework Directive. For the assessment of the ecological status of Italian transitional aquatic ecosystems, the multimetric index “Habitat Fish Bio-Indicator” (HFBI), based on fish fauna, was developed and validated at national level. This paper reports the results of a study on the shallow-water fish fauna of 5 lagoon environments of the Po Delta (Northern Adriatic, Italy) which aimed to evaluate the ecological status of these water bodies by calculating the HFBI. The results made it possible to describe the taxonomic composition and the functional and trophic structures of the fish community characteristic of these delta lagoons. The shallow water fish assemblage was characterized by the presence of juvenile stages of marine migrating species (i.e., grey mullets of the genus Chelon, the sea bream Sparus aurata and the sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax) and by species of estuarine residents (i.e., small gobies Knipowitschia panizzae, Pomatoschistus marmoratus, and P. canestrinii, the silverside Atherina boyeri and the killfish Aphanius fasciatus). The guilds of hyperbentivores/zooplanktivores, microbentivores and detritivores were the most represented in the fish assemblage of the of investigated lagoons. The HFBI index, applied on an annual basis, made it possible to highlight marked differences in the ecological status of the Po Delta lagoons. Only Caleri lagoon resulted in a good state, Marinetta and Canarin lagoons in a moderate state, while Barbamarco and Scardovari lagoons resulted in a poor ecological state. Eutrophication, resulting from the large inputs of nutrients with freshwater from the Po River branches, and the modification of lagoon morphologies, a consequence of anthropogenic activities, are the main pressure factors that determine the ecological status of these transitional water bodies

    Genetic and Non-Genetic Variation of Milk Total Antioxidant Activity Predicted from Mid-Infrared Spectra in Holstein Cows

    Food antioxidants enhance products shelf life and stability during technological treatments through the maintenance of their physical and chemical properties. Moreover, they are endowed with several positive effects on human health, including cell membranes preservation, enzyme functionality, and DNA integrity. Milk has been described in relation to a wide array of fat soluble and water-soluble antioxidant compounds, in particular vitamin A, C, and E, lactoferrin and peptides derived from casein and whey proteins. The total antioxidant activity (TAA) of milk is a novel and scarcely explored trait, defined as the sum of antioxidant contributions of the aforementioned compounds. On this background, the aims of the present study were to investigate the variability of milk TAA on a large scale exploiting predictions obtained through mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy and to estimate genetic parameters of this trait in Holstein cows. Individual milk samples were collected between January 2011 and December 2018 during the routine milk recording procedure. Samples were analysed for gross composition through MIR spectroscopy and MIR spectra were stored. Milk TAA was then predicted (pTAA) from the stored milk MIR spectra (111,653 test-day records of 9519 cows in 344 herds) using the previously developed prediction model; considering the prediction accuracy, pTAA might be considered a proxy of the TAA determined through the reference method. Overall, pTAA averaged 7.16 mmoL/L of Trolox equivalents, showed a nadir around 40 days after calving and increased thereafter, following a linear trend up to the end of lactation. The lowest pTAA was observed in milk sampled from June to September. Milk pTAA was heritable (0.401 ± 0.015) and genetically associated to fat yield (0.366 ± 0.049), crude protein (CP) yield (0.238 ± 0.052), fat percentage (0.616 ± 0.022) and CP percentage (0.754 ± 0.015). The official selection index of Italian Holstein put the 49% of the emphasis on fat and protein yield and percentage; therefore, it derives that an indirect favourable selection for milk pTAA should be already in progress in Italian Holstein population

    Living in Contaminated Sites: Which Cost for Psychic Health?

    In this paper, we would like to offer a psychoanalytically oriented perspective on the psychic costs of most documented technological disasters (e.g. oil spill and nuclear accidents) or industrial pollution (e.g. asbestos manufacturing). We report a brief literature review about the relationship between Contaminated Sites (CSs) and mental health. The articles were selected from the most important medical and psychological databases: MEDLINE/Pubmed, PsycINFO and Proquest Psychology Journal. After electronic searches, we have manually reviewed reference lists from the identified publications. Literature review reveals that despite the specific kind of technological disasters (i.e. nuclear accidents, oil spill, asbestos manufacturing), the cost of survival is pretty much the same: anxiety, somatizations, rage, depression and post-traumatic conditions, which undermine one’s own sense of psychic integrity. This cost seems to be even higher when people have to fight an invisible and boundless enemy, which threaten not only themselves but also their own children. Clinicians, mental health services and policy makers need to reflect upon these traumatic conditions in order to activate and promote a thinking process that can give rise to a new capability of containing all the experiential aspects that have remained alien, dissociated and unthinkable until that moment. Qualitative approaches and multi-dimensional analysis could lead a deeper understanding of the psychic dynamics and unconscious life in CSs. DOI: 10.5901/mjss.2015.v6n4s3p20

    Invited review: Milk lactose—Current status and future challenges in dairy cattle

    peer-reviewedLactose is the main carbohydrate in mammals' milk, and it is responsible for the osmotic equilibrium between blood and alveolar lumen in the mammary gland. It is the major bovine milk solid, and its synthesis and concentration in milk are affected mainly by udder health and the cow's energy balance and metabolism. Because this milk compound is related to several biological and physiological factors, information on milk lactose in the literature varies from chemical properties to heritability and genetic associations with health traits that may be exploited for breeding purposes. Moreover, lactose contributes to the energy value of milk and is an important ingredient for the food and pharmaceutical industries. Despite this, lactose has seldom been included in milk payment systems, and it has never been used as an indicator trait in selection indices. The interest in lactose has increased in recent years, and a summary of existing information about lactose in the dairy sector would be beneficial for the scientific community and the dairy industry. The present review collects and summarizes knowledge about lactose by covering and linking several aspects of this trait in bovine milk. Finally, perspectives on the use of milk lactose in dairy cattle, especially for selection purposes, are outlined

    Validation of a gold standard method for iodine quantification in raw and processed milk, and its variation in different dairy species

    Adequate milk consumption significantly contributes to meeting the human iodine recommended daily intake, which ranges from 70 µg/d for infants to 200 µg/d for lactating women. The fulfilment of iodine recommended daily intake is fundamental to prevent serious clinical diseases such as cretinism in infants and goiter in adults. In the present study iodine content was measured in raw and processed commercial cow milk, as well as in raw buffalo, goat, sheep, and donkey milk. Iodine extraction was based on 0.6% (vol/vol) ammonia, whereas iodine detection and quantification were carried out through an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer analyzer. Among processed commercial cow milk, partially skimmed pasteurized milk had the greatest iodine content (359.42 µg/kg) and raw milk the lowest (166.92 µg/kg). With regard to the other dairy species, the greatest iodine content was found in raw goat milk (575.42 µg/kg), followed by raw buffalo (229.82 µg/kg), sheep (192.64 µg/kg), and donkey milk (7.06 µg/kg). Repeatability of milk iodine content, calculated as relative standard deviation of 5 measurements within a day or operator, ranged from 0.96 to 1.84% and 0.72 to 1.16%, respectively. The overall reproducibility of milk iodine content, calculated as relative standard deviation of 45 measurements across 3 d of analyses and 3 operators, was 4.01%. These results underline the precision of the proposed analytical method for the determination of iodine content in milk

    THE CHECK-LIST OF THE ITALIAN FRESHWATER FISH FAUNA

    The results of the Working Group (WG) on the Systematics and Nomenclature of the italian freshwater fish species established within the A.I.I.A.D. are showed. WG, in about four years of activities, focused on the current taxonomic situation of Italian fish species (Cyclostomes and Bony Fishes), with special reference to the doubtful cases, in the light of the most recent scientific findings. The considerable amount of literature data collected allowed us to clarify the different points of view expressed by the authors who over time contributed to the deepening of knowledge. The Check-list of the Italian freshwater fish fauna could be a useful tool to reach a shared starting point to fill the existing knowledge gaps. Moreover, this need arises from the awareness that the presence of a univocal scientific nomenclature could play a key role in improving the conservation status of the native fish fauna. Finally, we believe that the scientific debate that will hopefully arise, as well as from the activities within WG, also from the presentation of the results to the Association, can represent a useful moment of comparison and cultural growth of all members. The Check-list with the proposed nomenclature for the Italian freshwater fish fauna, the notes drafted for each of the taxa examined (over 80), the sheets with the minutes of each of the discussion sessions carried out, and the archive including all the literature data collected represent useful tools that, through the website (http://www.aiiad.it), will become a shared heritage of the Association

    FUNDAMENTAL AND APPLIED RESEARCH ON FRESHWATER DECAPODS IN ITALY

    The study group of freshwater decapods established within the Italian Association of Freshwater Ichthyologists aims at improving knowledge on the biology of both native and alien freshwater crayfish, shrimps, and crabs which currently inhabit Italian lentic and lotic waters, promoting at the same time the establishment of a network of experts that guarantees an adequate spread of correct useful and usable information, not only for management activities by the local and national competent authorities, but even by non-experts. The group deals with taxonomy, systematic, zoogeography, ecology, ethology, physiology, anatomy, genetics, conservation (of natives) and management (of aliens) of freshwater decapods in Italy. Our main aim is to update the status of freshwater decapods within the national territory, useful for monitoring programs on these species and the habitats where they inhabit. It is necessary to study all the aspects of this order because many species represent an ecological (as a keystone species), fauna (some taxa are interesting peninsular endemisms), biogeographical (the Whole order includes peculiar models of dispersion, migration and vicariance) and evolutionary (there are stimulating case studies of adaptive radiation phenomena linked to a specific ecological value) heritage. Also from an applied perspective, freshwater decapods have a peculiar double aspect linked to the conservation of aquatic environments: on the one side some species can be considered as valuable biological indicators, but on the other side many alien species are reported to be invasive and their management is mandatory, according to the new European and Italian legislations, and should be ecologically, economically and culturally examined to evaluate their effects on environment, human activities and health
