    The westward lithospheric drift, its role on the subduction and transform zones surrounding Americas: Andean to Cordilleran orogenic types cyclicity

    We investigate the effect of the westerly rotation of the lithosphere on the active margins that surround the Americas and find good correlations between the inferred easterly-directed mantle counterflow and the main structural grain and kinematics of the Andes and Sandwich arc slabs. In the Andes, the subduction zone is shallow and with low dip, because the mantle flow sustains the slab; the subduction hinge converges relative to the upper plate and generates an uplifting doubly verging orogen. The Sandwich Arc is generated by a westerly-directed SAM (South American) plate subduction where the eastward mantle flow is steepening and retreating the subduction zone. In this context, the slab hinge is retreating relative to the upper plate, generating the backarc basin and a low bathymetry single-verging accretionary prism. In Central America, the Caribbean plate presents a more complex scenario: (a) To the East, the Antilles Arc is generated by westerly directed subduction of the SAM plate, where the eastward mantle flow is steepening and retreating the subduction zone. (b) To the West, the Middle America Trench and Arc are generated by the easterly-directed subduction of the Cocos plate, where the shallow subduction caused by eastward mantle flow in its northern segment gradually steepens to the southern segment as it is infered by the preexisting westerly-directed subduction of the Caribbean Plateau.In the frame of the westerly lithospheric flow, the subduction of a divergent active ridge plays the role of introducing a change in the oceanic/continental plate's convergence angle, such as in NAM (North American) plate with the collision with the Pacific/Farallon active ridge in the Neogene (Cordilleran orogenic type scenario). The easterly mantle drift sustains strong plate coupling along NAM, showing at Juan de Fuca easterly subducting microplate that the subduction hinge advances relative to the upper plate. This lower/upper plate convergence coupling also applies along strike to the neighbor continental strike slip fault systems where subduction was terminated (San Andreas and Queen Charlotte). The lower/upper plate convergence coupling enables the capture of the continental plate ribbons of Baja California and Yakutat terrane by the Pacific oceanic plate, transporting them along the strike slip fault systems as para-autochthonous terranes. This Cordilleran orogenic type scenario, is also recorded in SAM following the collision with the Aluk/Farallon active ridge in the Paleogene, segmenting SAM margin into the eastwardly subducting Tupac Amaru microplate intercalated between the proto-Liquiñe-Ofqui and Atacama strike slip fault systems, where subduction was terminated and para-autochthonous terranes transported. In the Neogene, the convergence of Nazca plate with respect to SAM reinstalls subduction and the present Andean orogenic type scenario

    Evolving trends in the management of acute appendicitis during COVID-19 waves. The ACIE appy II study

    Background: In 2020, ACIE Appy study showed that COVID-19 pandemic heavily affected the management of patients with acute appendicitis (AA) worldwide, with an increased rate of non-operative management (NOM) strategies and a trend toward open surgery due to concern of virus transmission by laparoscopy and controversial recommendations on this issue. The aim of this study was to survey again the same group of surgeons to assess if any difference in management attitudes of AA had occurred in the later stages of the outbreak. Methods: From August 15 to September 30, 2021, an online questionnaire was sent to all 709 participants of the ACIE Appy study. The questionnaire included questions on personal protective equipment (PPE), local policies and screening for SARS-CoV-2 infection, NOM, surgical approach and disease presentations in 2021. The results were compared with the results from the previous study. Results: A total of 476 answers were collected (response rate 67.1%). Screening policies were significatively improved with most patients screened regardless of symptoms (89.5% vs. 37.4%) with PCR and antigenic test as the preferred test (74.1% vs. 26.3%). More patients tested positive before surgery and commercial systems were the preferred ones to filter smoke plumes during laparoscopy. Laparoscopic appendicectomy was the first option in the treatment of AA, with a declined use of NOM. Conclusion: Management of AA has improved in the last waves of pandemic. Increased evidence regarding SARS-COV-2 infection along with a timely healthcare systems response has been translated into tailored attitudes and a better care for patients with AA worldwide

Además se ahonda en las relaciones de ida y vuelta entre España y América, como ocurre en Ceremonia Barroca o la cantata América a nivel general como en la indagación de elementos musicales de ida y vuelta como en la Sonata Atlántica. Los cruces son muchos y los hay de tipo histórico (Ultramarina, Epitafio para Lope de Aguirre) como mítico (Kukulcán) y antropológico. En realidad se diseña una línea de creación musical influida desde diversos puntos de vista por las realidades americana y mexicana

    En este artículo se expone el profundo cambio operado en la música por la posibilidad de fijar su sonido en un soporte, algo que se logra por primera vez en mucho siglos e influye sobre su carácter temporal y efímero. Se señala cómo eso ha cambiado totalmente el disfrute y el conocimiento musical pero también las transformaciones realizadas en los mecanismos de la escucha. No se puede rechazar la grabación ni tampoco creer que es un sustitutivo de la música, se trata de un formidable complemento. Otro elemento nuevo que introduce la grabación es el fenómeno de la escucha débil y la aparición de músicas para oír po no para escuchar así como la museificación no sólo del repertorio musical sino de sus interpretaciones concretas

    N-terminal acetylation mutants affect alpha-synuclein stability, protein levels and neuronal toxicity

    Alpha-synuclein (aSyn) protein levels are sufficient to drive Parkinson's disease (PD) and other synucleinopathies. Despite the biomedical/therapeutic potential of aSyn protein regulation, little is known about mechanisms that limit/control aSyn levels. Here, we investigate the role of a post-translational modification, Nterminal acetylation, in aSyn neurotoxicity. N-terminal acetylation occurs in all aSyn molecules and has been proposed to determine its lipid binding and aggregation capacities; however, its effect in aSyn stability/neurotoxicity has not been evaluated. We generated N-terminal mutants that alter or block physiological aSyn Nterminal acetylation in wild-type or pathological mutant E46K aSyn versions and confirmed N-terminal acetylation status by mass spectrometry. By optical pulse-labeling in living primary neurons we documented a reduced half-life and accumulation of aSyn N-terminal mutants. To analyze the effect of N-terminal acetylation mutants in neuronal toxicity we took advantage of a neuronal model where aSyn toxicity was scored by longitudinal survival analysis. Salient features of aSyn neurotoxicity were previously investigated with this approach. aSyn-dependent neuronal death was recapitulated either by higher aSyn protein levels in the case of WT aSyn, or by the combined effect of protein levels and enhanced neurotoxicity conveyed by the E46K mutation. aSyn Nterminal mutations decreased E46K aSyn-dependent neuronal death both by reducing protein levels and, importantly, by reducing the intrinsic E46K aSyn toxicity, being the D2P mutant the least toxic. Together, our results illustrate that the N-terminus determines, most likely through its acetylation, aSyn protein levels and toxicity, identifying this modification as a potential therapeutic target
