Molybdenum catalyzed peroxide bleaching (PMo Stage) consists of pulp treatment with hydrogen peroxide under acidic conditions in the presence of a molybdenum catalyst. Molybdenum is applied in catalytic doses (50-200 mg/kg pulp) and may originate from various sources, including (NH4)6Mo7O24.4H2O, Na2MoO4.2H2O, siliconmolybdate, etc. This work is aimed at optimizing the PMo stage and evaluating its industrial application in the OAZDP sequence. Optimum PMo stage conditions for bleaching eucalyptus pulp were 90 ºC, pH 3.5, 2 h, 0.1 kg/adt Mo and 5 kg/adt H2O2. The PMo stage was more efficient to remove pulp hexenuronic acids than lignin. Its efficiency decreased with increasing pH in the range of 1.5-5.5, while it increased with increasing temperature and peroxide and molybdenum doses. The application of the PMo stage as replacement for the A-stage of the AZDP sequence significantly decreased chlorine dioxide demand. The PMo stage caused a decrease of 20-30% in the generation of organically bound chlorine. The quality parameters of the pulp produced during the PMo stage mill trial were comparable to those obtained with the reference A-stage

The prevalence of anemias in preschool children at two health centers in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, was investigated. A total of 1,306 children, aged 6-60 months, were selected. The prevalence of anemias was almost twice as high in the children at the Health Center Lessa de Andrade, supported by the state government, as that found at the Health Center in Areias, belonging to the Federal Health service (INAMPS). The low hemoglobin levels, which varied from 41 to 77% in the sample of this age group, was found to be higher in children under two years of age. Besides being related to the age, and to the per capita income of the families, of the children under study, a statistical association was detected between anemia and nutritional status assessed by Gomez's classification.

Aerobic exercise and telomere length in patients with systolic heart failure : protocol study for a randomized controlled trial

Background: Heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) is a syndrome that leads to fatigue and reduced functional capacity due to disease-related pathophysiological mechanisms. Aerobic exercise (AERO) plays a key role in improving HF outcomes, such as an increase in peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak). In addition, HF promotes cell senescence, which involves reducing telomere length. Several studies have shown that patients with a worse prognosis (i.e., reduced VO2 peak) also have shorter telomeres. However, the effects of AERO on telomere length in patients with HFrEF are still unknown. In an attempt to fill this gap, we designed a study to determine the effects of 16 weeks of aerobic training (32 sessions) on telomere length in HFrEF patients. Methods: In this single-center randomized controlled trial, men and women between 50 and 80 years old will be allocated into two different groups: a moderate-intensity aerobic training and a control grouTelomere length, functional capacity, echocardiographic variables, endothelial function, and walking ability will be assessed before and after the 16-week intervention period. Discussion: Understanding the role of physical exercise in biological aging in HFrEF patients is relevant. Due to cell senescence, these individuals have shown a shorter telomere length. AERO can delay biological aging according to a balance in oxidative stress through antioxidant action. Positive telomere length results are expected for the aerobic training group

<p><b>Abstract</b></p> <p><b>Background</b></p> <p>In tropical countries, losses caused by bovine tick <it>Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus</it> infestation have a tremendous economic impact on cattle production systems. Genetic variation between <it>Bos taurus</it> and <it>Bos indicus</it> to tick resistance and molecular biology tools might allow for the identification of molecular markers linked to resistance traits that could be used as an auxiliary tool in selection programs. The objective of this work was to identify QTL associated with tick resistance/susceptibility in a bovine F2 population derived from the Gyr (<it>Bos indicus</it>) × Holstein (<it>Bos taurus</it>) cross.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Through a whole genome scan with microsatellite markers, we were able to map six genomic regions associated with bovine tick resistance. For most QTL, we have found that depending on the tick evaluation season (dry and rainy) different sets of genes could be involved in the resistance mechanism. We identified dry season specific QTL on BTA 2 and 10, rainy season specific QTL on BTA 5, 11 and 27. We also found a highly significant genome wide QTL for both dry and rainy seasons in the central region of BTA 23.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The experimental F2 population derived from Gyr × Holstein cross successfully allowed the identification of six highly significant QTL associated with tick resistance in cattle. QTL located on BTA 23 might be related with the bovine histocompatibility complex. Further investigation of these QTL will help to isolate candidate genes involved with tick resistance in cattle.</p

We present color image processing methods for the char\-ac\-te\-ri\-za\-tion of images of dermatological lesions for the purpose of content-based image retrieval (CBIR) and computer-aided di\-ag\-no\-sis. The intended application is to segment the images and perform classification and analysis of the tissue composition of skin lesions or ulcers, in terms of granulation (red), fibrin (yel\-low), necrotic (black), callous (white), and mixed tissue composition. The images were analyzed and classified by an expert dermatologist following the red-yellow-black-white model. Automatic segmentation was performed by means of clustering using Gauss\-ian mixture modeling, and its performance was evaluated by deriving the Jaccard coefficient between the automatically and manually segmented images. Statistical texture features were derived from cooccurrence matrices of RGB, HSI, L∗^*a∗^*b∗^*, and L∗^*u∗^*v∗^* color components. A retrieval engine was implemented using the k-nearest-neighbor classifier and the Euclidean, Man\-hat\-tan, and Chebyshev distance metrics. Classification was performed by means of a metaclassifier using logistic regression. The average Jaccard coefficient after the segmentation step between the automatically and manually segmented images was 0.560, with a standard deviation of 0.220. The performance in CBIR was mea\-sured in terms of precision of retrieval, with average values of up to 0.617 obtained with the Chebyshev distance. The metaclassifier yielded an average area under the receiver operating char\-ac\-ter\-is\-tic curve of 0.772
