    Creating an Entrepreneurial Culture at a Startup Engineering Program

    In 1992, the College of Engineering at Rowan University was created as the direct result of a 100milliongiftfromentrepreneurHenryM.Rowan.Mr.Rowansrequirementswerethatthegiftbeusedtocreateahighquality,publicundergraduateengineeringinstitutionandtoimpacttheeconomicdevelopmentofsouthernNewJersey,aregionwhichhashistoricallylaggedbehindnorthernNewJersey.HavingstartedwithacleancurriculumslateduringaperiodofnationalchangeinengineeringcurriculainresponsetoABET2000,wehadtheopportunitytoinfuseanentrepreneurialcultureintoourengineeringprogramfromitsinception.Specifically,wehavedevelopedthefollowingpolicies/programs:Createdan8semesterEngineeringCliniccoursesequenceinwhichhandsondesignprojectsarecompletedeverysemester.DevelopedajobfairmodelforstudentclinicprojectstaffinginwhichstudentsgethiredintotheirEngineeringClinicprojectsbymarketingthemselvesandtheircapabilitiestofaculty,CreatedanUndergraduateVentureCapitalFundwherestudentscanobtainfundingupto100 million gift from entrepreneur Henry M. Rowan. Mr. Rowan’s requirements were that the gift be used to create a high-quality, public undergraduate engineering institution and to impact the economic development of southern New Jersey, a region which has historically lagged behind northern New Jersey. Having started with a clean curriculum slate during a period of national change in engineering curricula in response to ABET 2000, we had the opportunity to infuse an entrepreneurial culture into our engineering program from its inception. Specifically, we have developed the following policies/programs: • Created an 8-semester Engineering Clinic course sequence in which hands-on design projects are completed every semester. • Developed a “job-fair” model for student clinic project staffing in which students get “hired” into their Engineering Clinic projects by marketing themselves and their capabilities to faculty, • Created an Undergraduate Venture Capital Fund where students can obtain funding up to 2500 per semester to develop their own original inventions, • Created the Competitive Assessment Laboratory for competitive benchmarking of consumer products. • Developed a micro-business model in which some Engineering Clinic project teams provide engineering services (design, fabrication, modeling, etc.) to other projects, • Hired (College of Business) an endowed chair in entrepreneurial studies, • Created the Technological Entrepreneurship Concentration, which is a certificate program that will be populated jointly by Engineering and Business students, • Obtained state funding to build the South Jersey Technology Park and Technology Business Incubator adjacent to the Rowan campus. This paper will describe the impact of each of these initiatives toward creating an entrepreneurial culture in our undergraduate students. It should be noted that many of these initiatives do not require a new program or major curriculum reform. Rather, our results suggest that it is possible to start with some small initiatives and build upon each initiative as the momentum for entrepreneurship develops

    Room temperature femtosecond optical parametric generation in MgO-doped stoichiometric LiTaO3

    We demonstrate room temperature femtosecond optical parametric generation with high average output power in periodically poled MgO-doped stoichiometric LiTaO3. Direct pumping with 725-fs pulses from a passively mode-locked thin disk laser at 1030nm resulted in stable 1.5W average signal power at 1484nm at the full laser repetition rate of 59MHz. With this demonstration we achieved a significant simplification of our recently presented red-green-blue laser source because no temperature stabilization of any nonlinear crystal is require

    A number of linkage maps have been previously developed in olive; however, these are mostly composed of markers that have not been characterized at the sequence level, supplemented with smaller numbers of microsatellite markers. In this investigation, we sought to develop a saturated linkage mapping resource for olive composed entirely of sequence characterized markers. We employed genotyping by sequencing to develop a map of a F2 population derived from the selfing of the cultivar Koroneiki. The linkage map contained a total of 23 linkage groups comprised of 1,597 tagged SNP markers in 636 mapping bins spanning a genetic distance of 1189.7 cM. An additional 6,658 segregating SNPs were associated with the 23 linkage groups identified but their marker order was not determined in this investigation. The SNP markers sequences were submitted to NCBI database. The linkage map produced will be an invaluable resource for the study of tree habit and vigour traits segregating in the progeny, and will assist to anchor and orientate sequencing scaffolds from future genome sequencing efforts

    The damming of a river causes dangerous consequences on structure of the environment downstream of the dam, modifying the sediment composition, which impose major adjustments in longitudinal distribution of benthic community. The construction of Engenheiro Sérgio Motta Dam in the Upper Paraná River has caused impacts on the aquatic communities, which are not yet fully known. This work aimed to provide more information about the effects of this impoundment on the structure of Chironomidae larvae assemblage. The analysis of data of physical and chemical variables in relation to biological data of 8 longitudinal sections in the Upper Paraná River showed that composition of Chironomidae larvae of stations near Engenheiro Sérgio Motta Dam differed of the other stations (farther of the Dam) The predominance of coarse sediments at stations upstream and finer sediments further downstream affected the choice of habitat by different morphotypes of Chironomidae and it caused a change in the structure of this assemblage in the longitudinal stretch.O barramento de um rio pode causar graves consequências sobre a natureza do ambiente, abaixo da barragem, modificando a composição do sedimento, as quais impõem importantes ajustes da distribuição longitudinal das comunidades bentônicas. A construção da Usina Hidrelétrica Engenheiro Sérgio Motta no alto rio Paraná, tem causado impactos em várias comunidades aquáticas, que ainda não são totalmente conhecidos. Este trabalho objetivou fornecer mais informações sobre os efeitos desse represamento na assembleia de Chironomidae. A análise das variáveis físicas e químicas em relação aos dados biológicos de oito transectos longitudinais no alto rio Paraná revelou que a composição das larvas de Chironomidae das estações mais próximas à barragem da Usina Engenheiro Sérgio Motta diferiu das demais (estações mais distantes). A predominância de sedimentos mais grosseiros nas estações a montante e sedimentos mais finos mais a jusante afetou a escolha de habitat pelos diferentes morfotipos de Chironomidae, que levou a alteração na estrutura desta assembleia ao longo do trecho amostrado.Fil: Pinha, G.     Influence of plasma processing on recovery and analysis of circulating nucleic acids.

    Circulating nucleic acids (CNAs) are under investigation as a liquid biopsy in cancer. However there is wide variation in blood processing and methods for isolation of circulating free DNA (cfDNA) and microRNAs (miRNAs). Here we compare the extraction efficiency and reproducibility of 4 commercially available kits for cfDNA and 3 for miRNA using spike-in of reference templates. We also compare the effects of increasing time between venepuncture and centrifugation and differential centrifugation force on recovery of CNAs. cfDNA was quantified by TaqMan qPCR and targeted deep sequencing. miRNA profiles were assessed with TaqMan low-density arrays and assays. The QIAamp(®) DNA Blood Mini and Circulating nucleic acid kits gave the highest recovery of cfDNA and efficient recovery (>90%) of a 564bp spike-in. Moreover, targeted sequencing revealed overlapping cfDNA profiles and variant depth, including detection of HER2 gene amplification, using the Ion AmpliSeq™Cancer Hotspot Panel v2. Highest yields of miRNA and the synthetic Arabidopsis thaliana miR-159a spike-in were obtained using the miRNeasy Serum/Plasma kit, with saturation above 200 µl of plasma. miRNA profiles showed significant variation with increasing time before centrifugation (p 12 years, highlighting the potential for analysis of stored sample biobanks. In the era of the liquid biopsy, standardisation of methods is required to minimise variation, particularly for miRNA

    Tropospheric and ionospheric anomalies induced by volcanic and saharan dust events as part of geosphere interaction phenomena

    In this work, we assessed the possible relation of ionospheric perturbations observed by Detection of Electro-Magnetic Emissions Transmitted from Earthquake Regions (DEMETER), Global Positioning System total electron content (GPS TEC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)-derived outgoing longwave-Earth radiation (OLR), and atmospheric chemical potential (ACP) measurements, with volcanic and Saharan dust events identified by ground and satellite-based medium infrared/thermal infrared (MIR/TIR) observations. The results indicated that the Mt. Etna (Italy) volcanic activity of 2006 was probably responsible for the ionospheric perturbations revealed by DEMETER on 4 November and 6 December and by GPS TEC observations on 4 November and 12 December. This activity also affected the OLR (on 26 October; 6 and 23 November; and 2, 6, and 14 December) and ACP (on 31 October-1 November) analyses. Similarly, two massive Saharan dust episodes, detected by Robust Satellite Techniques (RST) using Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) optical data, probably caused the ionospheric anomalies recorded, based on DEMETER and GPS TEC observations, over the Mediterranean basin in May 2008. The study confirmed the perturbing effects of volcanic and dust events on tropospheric and ionospheric parameters. Further, it demonstrated the advantages of using independent satellite observations to investigate atmospheric phenomena, which may not always be well documented. The impact of this increased detection capacity in reducing false positives, in the framework of a short-term seismic hazard forecast based on the study of ionospheric and tropospheric anomalies, is also addressed
