The Impact of AIDS on Income and Human Capital

This paper studies the impact of HIV/AIDS on per capita income and education. It ex-plores two channels from HIV/AIDS to income that have not been sufficiently stressed bythe literature: the reduction of the incentives to study due to shorter expected longevity andthe reduction of productivity of experienced workers. In the model individuals live for threeperiods, may get infected in the second period and with some probability die of Aids beforereaching the third period of their life. Parents care for the welfare of the future generationsso that they will maximize lifetime utility of their dynasty. The simulations predict that themost affected countries in Sub-Saharan Africa will be in the future, on average, thirty percentpoorer than they would be without AIDS. Schooling will decline in some cases by forty percent.These gures are dramatically reduced with widespread medical treatment, as it increases thesurvival probability and productivity of infected individuals.

Culture of history, public history, and history teaching : the investigation and the training of history teachers.

O artigo avalia a maneira como estudantes de hist?ria se relacionam com a cultura de hist?ria. Primeiro, discutimos as rela??es entre cultura de hist?ria, hist?ria p?blica e ensino de hist?ria. Na segunda parte, avaliamos as pol?ticas de forma??o e defendemos a investiga??o como princ?pio educativo para a forma??o. Na ?ltima, apresentamos a experi?ncia de produ??o de narrativas curtas produzidas pelos estudantes sobre a cultura de hist?ria. Nas tr?s partes, trazemos as vozes dos estudantes e sua reflex?o sobre a cultura de hist?ria. Defendemos que esse m?todo pode ser ?til no questionamento das rela??es sens?veis e racionais que mantemos com a hist?ria.The article assesses how students of History relate to the culture of History. First, we discuss the relationships between the culture of History, public History, and the teaching of History. The second part evaluates the policies for the formation of History teachers and defends research as an educational principle for their training. In the latter, we present the experience of producing short narratives produced by students about the culture of History. In the three parts, we bring the students? voices and their reflection on the culture of History. We argue that this method can be useful in questioning the sensible and rational relations that we maintain with History

A nostalgia como problema metahistórico: uma introdução

Historians are generally little interested in the phenomenon of nostalgia. Sometimes the term "nostalgic" is employed to mark "conservatives," in a complex movement in which such concepts are employed interchangeably. The following texts, translated by us, seek to invite Brazilian historians to pay due attention to possibilities - not only theoretical, but political - suggested by the reading of Arnold Gehlen's essays, "Happiness evaded. An interpretation of nostalgia (1976) - and Svetlana Boym - Nostalgia and its dislikes (2007).Os historiadores são em geral pouco interessados pelo fenômeno da nostalgia. Por vezes o termo “nostálgicos” é empregado no sentido de marcar os “conservadores”, num movimento complexo no qual tais conceitos são empregados de modo intercambiável. Popularizações do passado e historicidades democráticas: escrita colaborativa, performance e práticas do espaço

Este artigo pretende compreender as relações entre popularização do passado e democratização da história. Para tal, realizamos três estudos de caso que nos permitem pensar em outros regimes de escrita, presença e memória. No primeiro caso, descrevemos um suposto plágio que a revista de divulgação Leituras da História teria cometido a partir da Wikipédia, no segundo analisamos como as artes cênicas representam uma possibilidade ativa de relação com o passado traumático e, no terceiro, lidamos com a forma pela qual inscrições históricas no espaço urbano são constantemente ressignificadas. Concluímos que a popularização do passado em diferentes meios desestabiliza os lugares tradicionais de produção e consumo de conhecimento histórico, e lançam uma série de questões para repensar o lugar da historiografia na contemporaneidade. Palavras-chave: Popularização do passado.
