Nitroxide-Functionalized Graphene Oxide from Graphite Oxide

    Get PDF
A facile method for preparing functionalized graphene oxide single layers with nitroxide groups is reported herein. Highly oxidized graphite oxide (GO=90.6%) was obtained, slightly modifying an improved Hummer’s method. Oxoammonium salts (OS) were investigated to introduce nitroxide groups to GO, resulting in a one-step functionalization and exfoliation. The mechanisms of functionalization/exfoliation are proposed, where the oxidation of aromatic alcohols to ketone groups, and the formation of alkoxyamine species are suggested. Two kinds of functionalized graphene oxide layers (GOFT1 and GOFT2) were obtained by controlling the amount of OS added. GOFT1 and GOFT2 exhibited a high interlayer spacing (d0001 = 1.12nm), which was determined by X-ray diffraction. The presence of new chemical bonds C-N (~9.5 %) and O-O (~4.3 %) from nitroxide attached onto graphene layers were observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Single-layers of GOFT1 were observed by HRTEM, exhibiting amorphous and crystalline zones at a 50:50 ratio; in contrast, layers of GOFT2 exhibited a fully amorphous surface. Fingerprint of GOFT1 single layers was obtained by electron diffraction at several tilts. Finally, the potential use of these materials within Nylon 6 matrices was investigated, where an unusual simultaneous increase in tensile stress, tensile strain and Young’s modulus was observed

Clonal chromosomal mosaicism and loss of chromosome Y in elderly men increase vulnerability for SARS-CoV-2

The pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19) had an estimated overall case fatality ratio of 1.38% (pre-vaccination), being 53% higher in males and increasing exponentially with age. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, we found 133 cases (1.42%) with detectable clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations (mCA) and 226 males (5.08%) with acquired loss of chromosome Y (LOY). Individuals with clonal mosaic events (mCA and/or LOY) showed a 54% increase in the risk of COVID-19 lethality. LOY is associated with transcriptomic biomarkers of immune dysfunction, pro-coagulation activity and cardiovascular risk. Interferon-induced genes involved in the initial immune response to SARS-CoV-2 are also down-regulated in LOY. Thus, mCA and LOY underlie at least part of the sex-biased severity and mortality of COVID-19 in aging patients. Given its potential therapeutic and prognostic relevance, evaluation of clonal mosaicism should be implemented as biomarker of COVID-19 severity in elderly people. Among 9578 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 in the SCOURGE study, individuals with clonal mosaic events (clonal mosaicism for chromosome alterations and/or loss of chromosome Y) showed an increased risk of COVID-19 lethality

Role of turbulent flow seawater in the corrosion enhancement of an Al–Zn–Mg alloy: an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)

    No full text
The effect of flow on the corrosion of Al–14 wt% Zn–8 wt% Mg alloy in aerated synthetic seawater at ambient temperature was studied using a rotating cylinder electrode (RCE) under turbulent regime conditions by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The overall electrochemical corrosion process was found to be strongly influenced by the oxygen mass transfer process under turbulent flow conditions on the cathodic kinetics, driving to a significant increase in corrosion rate.At corrosion potential, Ecorr value, contributions from the anodic and cathodic processes involved were observed in the impedance diagrams. Instead, at a cathodic potential of −1.2 V (sce), impedance measurements proved the predominance of the mass-transfer process for oxygen. A primary analysis of the impedance plots allowed to confirm such situation. Keywords: Aluminum alloy, Corrosion, EIS, Flow, Oxygen, Mass transfer, Rotating cylinder electrode, Seawate

Complexation between darunavir and β-Cyclodextrin. Experimental and theoretical studies

    No full text
Darunavir (DRV) is a protease inhibitor used in the treatment of HIVinfection, which constitutes a keystone in the therapy of patientsinfected with this virus. Unfortunately, DRV has low solubility inwater and poor bioavailability, therefore it requires administration inrelatively high doses in order to exhibit therapeutic efficacy. Acommonly applied approach to increase the solubility of drugs is theformation of complexes with macromolecules, of which molecularencapsulation with β-cyclodextrin (βCD) constitutes an alternative forthe development of new pharmaceutical dosage forms. Therefore, itwas to evaluate by theoretical (molecular modelling) and experimental(spectroscopic) approaches the possibility of obtaining an inclusioncomplex between DRV and βCD. From the results obtained by thedocking procedures, we found three clusters of conformations for the DRV:β-CD complex, corresponding to conformations in which the ligand moieties were buried into the β-CD hydrophobic cavities. Molecular modelling results were compared with spectroscopic studies, with 1H NMR studies evidencing that DRV and βCD proton resonances were modified upon complexation, thus confirming the formation of the inclusion complex. The combination of theoretical and experimental techniques confirmed the formation of the inclusion complex between DRV and βCD.Fil: Kogawa, A. C.. Fast and inexpensive synthesis of pentacene with high yield using 6,13-pentacenequinone as precursor

    No full text
Pentacene is an important semiconductor in the field of organic electronics. In this work is presented an alternative synthesis procedure to obtain pentacene from 6,13-pentacenequinone as a precursor. Synthesis of pentacene was performed in two reactions, Diels-Adler cycloaddition of 6,13-pentacenequinone followed by 6,13-pentacenequinone reduction to pentacene, employing LiAlH4 as reducing agent. The products were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H-NMR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Ultraviolet–Visible Spectroscopy (UV-VIS). In this work, 6,13-pentacenequinone was synthetized with a high yield (55%) using an alternative method. The optimization process resulted in an overall reduction of reaction time while exhibiting high yield. The method presented here provides an affordable pentacene synthesis route with high purity, which can be further applied for research and development of organic electronic applications

Light-Induced Proton Pumping with a Semiconductor: Vision for Photoproton Lateral Separation and Robust Manipulation

Energy-transfer reactions are the key for living open systems, biological chemical networking, and the development of life-inspired nanoscale machineries. It is a challenge to find simple reliable synthetic chemical networks providing a localization of the time-dependent flux of matter. In this paper, we look to photocatalytic reaction on TiO2 from different angles, focusing on proton generation and introducing a reliable, minimal-reagent-consuming, stable inorganic light-promoted proton pump. Localized illumination was applied to a TiO2 surface in solution for reversible spatially controlled inorganic photoproton isometric cycling, the lateral separation of water-splitting reactions. The proton flux is pumped during the irradiation of the surface of TiO2 and dynamically maintained at the irradiated surface area in the absence of any membrane or predetermined material structure. Moreover, we spatially predetermine a transient acidic pH value on the TiO2 surface in the irradiated area with the feedback-driven generation of a base as deactivator. Importantly we describe how to effectively monitor the spatial localization of the process by the in situ scanning ion-selective electrode technique (SIET) measurements for pH and the scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) for local photoelectrochemical studies without additional pH-sensitive dye markers. This work shows the great potential for time- and space-resolved water-splitting reactions for following the investigation of pH-stimulated processes in open systems with their flexible localization on a surface
