    Bias in food intake reporting in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes: the role of body size, age and gender

    An assessment of total daily energy intake is helpful in planning the overall treatment of children with type 1 diabetes (T1D). However, energy intake misreporting may hinder nutritional intervention.Aims: To assess the plausibility of energy intake reporting and the potential role of gender, body mass index (BMI) z-score (z-BMI), disease duration and insulin requirement in energy intake misreporting in a sample of children and adolescents with T1D.Methods: The study included 58 children and adolescents aged 8–16 yr with T1D. Anthropometry, blood pressure and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were measured. Subjects were instructed to wear a SenseWear Pro Armband (SWA) for 3 consecutive days, including a weekend day and to fill out with their parents a weighed dietary record for the same days. Predicted energy expenditure (pEE) was calculated by age and gender specific equations, including gender, age, weight, height and physical activity level (assessed by SWA). The percent reported energy intake (rEI)/pEE ratio was used as an estimate of the plausibility of dietary reporting.Results: Misreporting of food intake, especially under-reporting, was common in children and adolescents with T1D: more than one-third of participants were classified as under- reporters and 10% as over-reporters. Age, z-BMI and male gender were associated with the risk of under-reporting (model R2 = 0.5). Waist circumference was negatively associated with the risk of over-reporting (model R2 = 0.25).Conclusions: Children and adolescents with T1D frequently under-report their food intake. Age, gender and z-BMI contribute to identify potential under-reporters

    Dissociative experiences and psychopathology among Italian and Portuguese inmates

    The association between dissociation and psychopathological symptoms is well established, yet studies with inmates are lacking. If higher rates of dissociation and psychiatric symptoms are reported in inmate samples, it is not clear whether they represent two separate, albeit related, characteristics. We examined the association between dissociation and psychopathological symptoms among 320 Italian subjects (122 inmates and 198 community participants) and a Portuguese inmate sample (n = 67). Then, we tested whether dissociation and psychopathology levels were higher among inmates. Both hypotheses were supported, confirming the relevance of dissociative, paranoid, and psychotic symptoms among inmates, as well as their interrelations. Notably, the group difference in dissociation remained significant after partialing out the variance associated with other psychopathological symptoms. Conversely, only the difference in paranoid symptoms remained—marginally—significant when controlling for the influence of dissociation. This finding suggests that dissociation may have unique relevance for the psychological functioning of inmates

    Retrospective evaluation of whole exome and genome mutation calls in 746 cancer samples

    Funder: NCI U24CA211006Abstract: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) curated consensus somatic mutation calls using whole exome sequencing (WES) and whole genome sequencing (WGS), respectively. Here, as part of the ICGC/TCGA Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium, which aggregated whole genome sequencing data from 2,658 cancers across 38 tumour types, we compare WES and WGS side-by-side from 746 TCGA samples, finding that ~80% of mutations overlap in covered exonic regions. We estimate that low variant allele fraction (VAF < 15%) and clonal heterogeneity contribute up to 68% of private WGS mutations and 71% of private WES mutations. We observe that ~30% of private WGS mutations trace to mutations identified by a single variant caller in WES consensus efforts. WGS captures both ~50% more variation in exonic regions and un-observed mutations in loci with variable GC-content. Together, our analysis highlights technological divergences between two reproducible somatic variant detection efforts

    Automatic crash detection system for two-wheeled vehicles: design and experimental validation

    In the insurance telematics context, four-wheeled vehicles are being equipped with e-Boxes installed on the battery, allowing an online monitoring of the vehicle motion thanks to an inertial measurement unit and a GPS unit. The main service that the e-Box enables is the automatic reconstruction of the real crash dynamics, and the detection of potentially dangerous situations, with the subsequent automatic activation of rescue operations, both for driver and passengers and for the vehicle itself. How to design such system for two-wheeled vehicles is far from trivial, as the dynamics of two-wheelers is much different, and so are the ways in which accidents may occur. In this work, a novel crash detection algorithm for two-wheeled vehicles is presented, and its validity is proved against experimental data.     Asymmetry for Symmetry: Right-Hemispheric Superiority in Bi-Dimensional Symmetry Perception

    A right-hemispheric superiority has been shown for spatial symmetry perception with mono-dimensional stimuli (e.g., bisected lines). Nevertheless, the cerebral imbalance for bi-dimensional stimuli is still controversial, and the aim of the present study is to investigate this issue. Healthy participants and a split-brain patient (D.D.C.) were tested in a divided visual field paradigm, in which a square shape was presented either in the left or right visual field and they were asked to judge whether a dot was placed exactly in the center of the square or off-center, by using the left/right hand in two separate sessions. The performance of healthy participants was better when the stimuli presented in the left visual field (LVF) were on-center rather than off-center. The performance of D.D.C. was higher than chance only when on-center stimuli were presented in the LVF in the left hand session. Only in this condition did his accuracy not differ with respect to that of the control group, whereas in all of the other conditions, it was lower than the controls’ accuracy. We conclude that the right-hemispheric advantage already shown for mono-dimensional stimuli can be extended also to bi-dimensional configurations, confirming the right-hemispheric superiority for spatial symmetry perception

    Conscious and unconscious processing of facial expressions: Evidence from two split-brain patients

    We investigated how the brain's hemispheres process explicit and implicit facial expressions in two 'split-brain' patients (one with a complete and one with a partial anterior resection). Photographs of faces expressing positive, negative or neutral emotions were shown either centrally or bilaterally. The task consisted in judging the friendliness of each person in the photographs. Half of the photograph stimuli were 'hybrid faces', that is an amalgamation of filtered images which contained emotional information only in the low range of spatial frequency, blended to a neutral expression of the same individual in the rest of the spatial frequencies. The other half of the images contained unfiltered faces. With the hybrid faces the patients and a matched control group were more influenced in their social judgements by the emotional expression of the face shown in the left visual field (LVF). When the expressions were shown explicitly, that is without filtering, the control group and the partially callosotomized patient based their judgement on the face shown in the LVF, whereas the complete split-brain patient based his ratings mainly on the face presented in the right visual field. We conclude that the processing of implicit emotions does not require the integrity of callosal fibres and can take place within subcortical routes lateralized in the right hemisphere

    Policaptil Gel Retard Intake Reduces Postprandial Triglycerides, Ghrelin and Appetite in Obese Children: A Clinical Trial

    The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that the intake of Policaptil Gel Retard((R)) (PGR) is able to affect appetite, metabolic and hormonal postprandial profile in obese children. 46 obese children were randomly assigned to treatment with PGR or placebo, in a double blind clinical trial. Two PGR tablets or placebo were given in fasting condition, before the ingestion of a mixed meal (15 kcal/kg lean body mass). Blood samples were taken at baseline and for 4 h, for measuring blood lipids, glucose, insulin, ghrelin, and glucagon like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Appetite was quantified using a visual analog scale. Children assuming PGR had a significantly lower increase of postprandial triglycerides (area under the curve (AUC): 3021 (2879) vs. 5038 (3738) mg x 240 min/Dl) and appetite (-234 (274) vs. 36 (329)) than children assuming placebo. The AUC of ghrelin was significantly lower after PGR ingestion, than after placebo (-8179 (8073) vs. -2800 (7579) pg x 240 min/mL). Blood glucose, insulin, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and GLP-1 profiles were not significantly different in the two groups. In conclusion, a single intake of two tablets of PGR was associated with a significant reduction of appetite, ghrelin, and triglycerides in the postprandial period in obese children. Further investigation will assess if a chronic intake of PGR may affect body weight and glucose metabolism

    Glucose-independent association of adiposity and diet composition with cardiovascular risk in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes

    Aims: To test the hypothesis that diet composition, adiposity and glycometabolic control could independently contribute to an increase in the cardiovascular risk (CVR) for children/adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Methods: One hundred and eighty children/adolescents with T1D (age range 5\u201318&nbsp;years) were enrolled. Diet (3-day weighed dietary record), physical (height, weight, waist circumference, bioelectrical impedance analysis) and biochemical (HbA1c, lipid profile) parameters were recorded. Regression models, using non-HDL cholesterol (a gross index of CVR) as the dependent variable and HbA1c (mmol/mol), fat mass (FM) %, lipid-to-carbohydrate intake ratio as independent ones, were calculated. Results: Non-HDL cholesterol was significantly associated with adiposity (FM%; r&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.27, 95% CI 0.13\u20130.43), body fat distribution (waist-to-height ratio; r&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.16, 95% CI 0.02\u20130.31), lipid intake [% of energy intake (EI)] (r&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.25, 95% CI 0.11\u20130.41), carbohydrate intake (% EI; r&nbsp;=&nbsp; 120.24, 95% CI 0.10\u20130.40), lipid-to-carbohydrate intake ratio (r&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.26, 95% CI 0.12\u20130.42) and blood glucose control (HbA1c; r&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.24, 95% CI 0.10\u20130.40). A p value cutoff of 0.10 was used for covariates to be included in the regression analysis. Multiple regression analysis showed that adiposity (FM%), blood glucose control (HbA1c) and lipid-to-carbohydrate intake ratio independently contributed to explaining the inter-individual variability of non-HDL cholesterol (R2&nbsp;=&nbsp;0.163, p&nbsp;&lt;&nbsp;0.05). Conclusions: Adiposity and lipid-to-carbohydrate intake ratio affect non-HDL cholesterol, a gross index of CVR, regardless of HbA1c, in children and adolescents with T1D. Intervention to reduce CVR in T1D patients should focus not only on glycometabolic control but also on adiposity and diet composition
