    The role of scenario, deontic conditionals and problem content in Wason´s selection task

    This paper was presented at "The European Conference on Cognitive Science. Siena, Italy, October 1999"This experiment explores the influence of thematic content, the presence or absence of a scenario and the use of deontic or indicative framing of conditional rules on performance on Wason’s selection task. Logical performance was affected by the content used (permission rules were the best, neutral the worst and obligation rules intermediate) and by the use of scenarios. The scenario effect interacted significantly with the problem framing such that the presence of a scenario facilitate performance only when problems were framed in a deontic rather than indicative manner. The presence of scenarios did not interact with the problem content. These results are discussed in terms of pragmatic influences on reasoning, within the framework of the Dual Process Theory (Evans & Over, 1996

    Recent Approaches for the Manufacturing of Polymeric Cranial Prostheses by Incremental Sheet Forming

    This paper presents recent research experiences developed with the aim of manufacturing cranial prostheses in polymeric sheet using Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF) technologies. With this purpose, different approaches have been carried out in Single-Point Incremental Forming (SPIF) and Two-Point Incremental Forming (TPIF) in order to produce customized cranial implants using different polymeric materials. In this context, this research work provides a methodology to design and manufacture polymer customized cranial prostheses using the ISF technologies starting from a patient’s computerized tomography (CT). The results demonstrate the potential of manufacturing polymeric cranial prostheses by ISF in terms of the high formability achievable and show the appropriate geometrical accuracy at affordable manufacturing costs provided by these processes.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad DPI2015-64047-

    Magneto-optical effects in interacting localized and propagating surface plasmon modes

    We report that the effect of an external magnetic field on the propagation of surface plasmons can be effectively modified through the coupling between localized (LSP) and propagating (SPP) surface plasmons. When these plasmon modes do not interact, the main effect of the magnetic field is a modification of the wavevector of the SPP mode, leaving the LSP virtually unaffected.     Impact of sensor-augmented pump therapy with predictive low-glucose management on hypoglycemia and glycemic control in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus : 1-year follow-up

    Q2Artículo original2625-2631AIMS: To describe real-life experience with sensor-augmented pump therapy with predictive low-glucose management (SAPT-PLGM), in terms of hypoglycemia and glycemic control after one year of follow-up in T1D patients with hypoglycemia as the main indication of therapy. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study under real life conditions. Baseline and one-year follow-up variables of glycemic control, hypoglycemia and glycemic variability were compared. RESULTS: Fifty patients were included, 31 on prior treatment with SAPT with low-glucose suspend (LGS) feature and 19 on multiple dose insulin injections (MDI). Mean HbA1c decreased in the MDI group (8.24%-7.08%; p = 0.0001). HbA1c change was not significant in the SAPT-LGS group. Area under the curve (AUC) below 70 mg/dl improved in both SAPT-LGS and MDI groups while AUC, %time and events below 54 mg/dl decreased in SAPT-LGS group. Glycemic variability improved in the MDI group. Less patients presented severe hypoglycemia with SAPT-PLGM in both groups, however the change was non-significant. CONCLUSIONS: Under real life conditions, SAPT-PLGM reduced metrics of hypoglycemia in patients previously treaded with MDI and SAPT-LGS without deteriorating glycemic control in SAPT-LGS patients, while improving it in patients treated with MDI

    Magnetoplasmonic Interferometers and Applications

    Comunicación presentada en el 2nd Early Stage Researchers Workshop in Nanoscience, celebrado en Madrid el 28 y 29 de junio de 2012.Surface plasmons polaritons (SPP) are evanescent waves that propagate along a dielectric-metal interface. They can be confined in subwavelength metal structures, i.e. below the diffraction limit, which leads to many possible applications, including miniaturized optical devices. Within that context, the development of active plasmonics is important to achieve nanophotonic devices with advanced functionalities. This requires a system where the plasmon properties can be manipulated using an external agent. Among the different control agents considered so far, the magnetic field seems a promising candidate, since it is able to modify the dispersion relation of SPP at reasonable magnetic field strengths, and with a high switching speed. This modulation comes from the non-diagonal elements of the dielectric tensor, εij, appearing when the magnetic field is turned on. For noble metals, the ones typically used in plasmonics, these elements are proportional to the applied magnetic field but, unfortunately, very small at field values reasonable for developing applications. On the other hand, ferromagnetic metals have sizeable εij values at small magnetic fields (proportional to their magnetization), but are optically too absorbent. A smart system to develop magnetic field tunable plasmonic devices is the use of multilayers of noble and ferromagnetic metals. That is the framework of the present work, where we analyze the magnetic field induced SPP wavevector modulation (Ak) in Au/Co/Au films as a function of the wavelength and its possible application as a sensor.N

    The urban soils of Seville have been studied within a European project (URBSOIL) during recent years. Relatively high levels of some metals (Cu, Pb and Zn) have been found in the nearest sites to the historical city centre suggesting a definite human influence. In general, a high metal availability has been found, which is a cause of concern. The object of this work was to study the relations between some general parameters in soils (pH, texture, electrical conductivity, calcium carbonate equivalent, organic carbon, N, C/N ratio) and the Cu and Zn contents, as well as to study the effect of depth on and the relations between them.Los suelos urbanos de Sevilla han sido estudiados en los últimos años dentro del proyecto URBSOIL. Previamente se habían encontrado niveles relativamente elevados de algunos metales (Cu, Pb y Zn) en las zonas más cercanas al centro histórico de la ciudad, con lo que parece evidente la influencia humana en el origen de estos metales. En general se había encontrado una alta disponibilidad de los metales, lo que incrementa la preocupación por este tipo de contaminación. El objetivo de este trabajo es estudiar las relaciones entre los parámetros generales de los suelos (pH, granulometría, conductividad eléctrica, carbonato, carbono orgánico, nitrógeno y relación C/N) y los contenidos de Cu y Zn, así como estudiar la variación con la profundidad. Para ello, se han tomado muestras en un total de 32 puntos, a dos profundidades (0 a 10 cm y 10 a 20 cm) en varios parques y jardines de Sevilla, desde diciembre de 2003 a marzo de 2004. Las muestras se caracterizaron midiendo sus propiedades más importantes y sus contenidos pseudototales de Cu y Zn por digestión con agua regia.

    Properties of polyplexes formed between a cationic polymer derived from l-arabinitol and nucleic acids

    In this work a sugar-based cationic polymer derived from l-arabinitol, PUArab, was prepared and its interactions with the linear calf thymus DNA and with the circular plasmid pEGFP-C1 were investigated at different N/P ratios. The polyplexes were characterized by using several techniques. For both nucleic acids, a charge inversion was observed, together with a conformational change from a coiled structure to a more compacted one. However, the N/P ratio required to observe the DNA condensation depended on the nucleic acid architecture. PUArab presents low toxicity in several cell lines. The transfection efficiency, TE, of the PUArab/pEGFP-C1 polyplexes was investigated at several N/P ratios in order to study their potential as vectors in gene transfection
