Antennal phenotype variation in sylvatic, peridomestic and domestic populations of Triatoma dimidiata (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) from Santander, Colombia
Introduction. Triatoma dimidiata is one of the widely distributed triatomines in Colombia. The phenotype of the antenna is a characteristic of populations that can differ among habitats and can give information concerning its biology and behavior. This information in turn can be used in the development of new methodological proposals for its control. Objective. The behavior of populations of Triatoma dimidiate was studied in several different habitats, using the antennal phenotype. Materials and methods. A mechanoreceptor and three chemoreceptors were compared in the antennae of 60 Triatoma dimidiata adults from several defined habitats in Santander, using unvariate and multivariate analyses. Results. The multivariate analysis differentiated the female populations significantly. These differences were associated with variations in the number of thick-walled trichoids and with the numerical increase of the thin walled trichoids in habitats close to human housing. The males, with a larger number of sensilla and thin walled trichoids, were not differentiated significantly, although, similar tendencies were observed. Sexual dimorphism was clear in these characters in the total population, but less pronounced in the domestic populations. Conclusions. The antennal sensilla patterns were useful in the intraspecific differentiation of Triatoma dimidiata in different habitats. The differences in the female population shed light on new sensorial arrangements for the exploration of the habitat, in contrast with the male populations that, because of their great capacity for dispersion, were not differentiated in the distinct habitats. The differences in sensilla patterns between females from urban areas and those from rural surroundings may be a simple and efficient marker of the origin of individual Triatominae attempting to colonize new habitats.Fil: Arroyo, Corina Macia. Beamforming filtering with real-time constraints on mobile embedded devices
Proceedings of the First PhD Symposium on Sustainable Ultrascale
Computing Systems (NESUS PhD 2016) Timisoara, Romania. February 8-11, 2016.Nowadays Tables and Smart phones are equipped with low power processor. Some of them, like the NVIDIA Tegra
SoC, also come with a GPU integrated so that both, the CPU and the GPU have access directly to the same RAM
memory. In another vein, one the main limitations of microphone array algorithms for audio processing is the high
computational cost required to reproduce real acoustics environments when real-time signal processing is absolutely
required. One of these algorithms is the Beamforming Algorithm, which is used to recover acoustic signals from
their observations when they are corrupted by noise, reverberation and other interfering signals. In order to achieve
real-time processing executing this algorithm we have employed high performance libraries such as OPENBLAS,
LAPACK, CUBLAS, PLASMA and MAGMA, and a particular tune programming for these mobile devices.European Cooperation in Science and Technology. COS
A Novel Loss-of-Function Mutation (N48K) in the PTEN Gene in a Spanish Patient with Cowden Disease
Cowden disease, also known as multiple hamartoma syndrome, is a rare disease inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, which confers a high risk of developing breast and thyroid carcinomas. Mutations in PTEN, a tumor suppressor gene located on chromosome 10q23, have been identified in patients with Cowden disease. In this work, the direct sequencing of all coding regions of the PTEN gene led us to the identification of N48K, a new germline PTEN missense mutation, in a patient suffering from Cowden disease. The genetic analysis of 200 chromosomes from healthy individuals revealed that the variant was not common in our population. Moreover, by functional analysis we found that the ability of PTEN N48K mutant protein to inhibit the activation of the proto-oncogene PKB/Akt was impaired, supporting the involvement of N48K mutation in Cowden disease. Loss of heterozygosity using three microsatellites (D10S215, D10S541, and D10S564) and the complete sequence analysis of PTEN exons in breast and endometrial tumor samples from the same patient were also carried out in an attempt to identify additional PTEN somatic mutations. The lack of loss of heterozygosity or additional mutations in tumor samples suggests that abnormalities of the regulatory regions of the PTEN gene or haplo-insufficiency might occur in tumors from Cowden disease patients
A projected cost-utility analysis of avacopan for the treatment of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis in Spain
Avacopan; Cost-utility analysis; VasculitisAvacopan; Anàlisi cost-utilitat; VasculitisAvacopan; Análisis costo-utilidad; VasculitisBackground
Antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV) are rare autoimmune diseases characterized by inflammation of blood vessels. This study aimed to assess the cost-utility of avacopan in combination with rituximab (RTX) or cyclophosphamide (CYC) compared with glucocorticoids (GC) for the treatment of severe, active AAV in Spain.
Methods
A 9-state Markov model was designed to reflect the induction of remission and sustained remission of AAV over a lifetime horizon. Clinical data and utility values were mainly obtained from the ADVOCATE trial, and costs (€ 2022) were sourced from national databases. Quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), and incremental cost-utility ratio (ICUR) were evaluated. An annual discount rate of 3% was applied. Sensitivity analyses were performed to examine the robustness of the results.
Results
Avacopan yielded an increase in effectiveness (6.52 vs. 6.17 QALYs) and costs (€16,009) compared to GC, resulting in an ICUR of €45,638 per additional QALY gained. Avacopan was associated with a lower incidence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD), relapse and hospitalization-related adverse events. Sensitivity analyses suggested that the model outputs were robust and that the progression to ESRD was a driver of ICUR.
Conclusions
Avacopan is a cost-effective option for patients with severe, active AAV compared to GC in Spain. This cost-utility study has been funded by Vifor Fresenius Medical Care Renal Pharma
Engineering Education for Sustainable Development: The European Project Semester Approach
Contribution: An analysis of the extent to which sustainability is present in the syllabi, project briefs, report templates, and student final reports of the three Iberian European project semester (EPS) providers, over a five-year period. Background: EPS is a one-semester capstone project framework that adopts project-based learning and multicultural, multidisciplinary teamwork. Educating engineers for sustainable development requires fostering critical and ethical thinking and a desire for equity, solidarity and preservation of natural resources, and cultural and genetic diversity. Existing engineering capstone design programs emphasize solving real world problems, hands-on training, and soft skills, but few focus on sustainability aspects of engineering design. The three Iberian EPS providers adopt project-based learning and teamwork methodologies, promoting the development of transversal skills and addressing sustainability in a multicultural and multidisciplinary background. Intended Outcomes: To show that the three Iberian EPS providers follow these recommendations and contribute to raising students' awareness of sustainable development. Application Design: The proposed sustainability learning assessment method collects evidence from syllabi, project briefs, report templates, and final reports to extract faculty and student perspectives. The sustainability-related terms collected were processed into word cloud format, allowing a simple and intuitive interpretation of students' understanding of sustainability, and in co-occurrence network format, to understand if sustainability has a pervasive or confined presence within the reports. Findings: Iberian EPS faculty and students are aware of the social, economic, and environmental impact of their projects, in terms of quality of life, social responsibility, the use of resources, and environmentally friendly technology.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Defective Adaption of Erythrocytes During Acute Hypoxia Injury in an Elderly Population
The present study investigated the changes in several erythrocyte oxidative stress biomarkers in hypoxic elderly individuals to analyze the deleterious effects of low oxyhemoglobin saturation in an elderly population. We collected blood samples from one normoxic middle-aged group and two groups composed of individuals older than 75 years of age: one normoxic group and one hypoxic group. Aging appeared to provoke a defective erythrocyte antioxidant defense associated with increased oxidative damage in the elderly population. Acute hypoxia activated an insufficient antioxidant defense response as suggested by the oxidative damage observed. The oxidative imbalance presented in older participants and increased in hypoxia participants had a direct effect on glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase cell distribution. Oxidative stress levels altered Band 3 protein and mediated caspase-3 activation in erythrocyte from the aged group although it was not extended to hypoxic individuals. Therefore, aged participants appeared to activate an insufficient antioxidant response against hypoxia-related oxidative stress.Instituto Carlos III (FISS-06-RD06/0013/0011); Ministerio de Agricultura and FEDER (INIA RTA2007-00087-C02-02); FICYT (Gobierno del Principado de Asturias) (IB09-134)
