Una nueva mirada sobre los "oppida" de la Europa Templada

The development of the oppida, large Late Iron Age agglomerations, is one of the most notable phenomena of European Protohistory, and also one of the most studied. However, the research of recent decades currently offers us a new insight into their origin, characteristics and functions. In addition to purely economic aspects, recent studies emphasize the important political and religious role played by these centres. Similarly, the discovery of a growing number of large open agglomerations shows that settlement structure was much more complex than traditionally thought. In this article I shall try to deconstruct some quite firmly entrenched myths, propose numerous qualifications and offer an at least partially alternative view on the oppida of Temperate Europe.El desarrollo de los oppida, grandes aglomeraciones de finales de la Edad del Hierro, constituye uno de los fenómenos más destacados y también estudiados de la Protohistoria europea. No obstante, las investigaciones de las últimas décadas permiten ofrecer actualmente una visión renovada sobre su génesis, características y funciones. Junto a los aspectos puramente económicos, estudios recientes ponen el acento en el importante papel político y religioso desempeñado por dichos centros. Asimismo, el descubrimiento de un creciente número de grandes aglomeraciones abiertas muestra que la estructura del poblamiento fue mucho más compleja de lo tradicionalmente pensado. En el marco del presente artículo trataré de desmontar algunos mitos en principio firmemente establecidos, proponer numerosos matices y aportar una visión al menos parcialmente alternativa sobre los oppida de la Europa Templada

Socio-political levels and government organs in late protohistoric gaul

El estudio del mundo galo ha experimentado importantes avances durante los últimos años, gracias tanto a nuevas miradas sobre los textos clásicos como al desarrollo de las investigaciones arqueológicas y a la realización de aproximaciones interdisciplinares. "Celts" in Andalusia? A historiographical look on an (almost) forgotten issue

La presencia de poblaciones célticas en el sur de la Península Ibérica es un hecho generalmente aceptado desde los inicios de las modernas investigaciones lingüísticas y arqueológicas, si bien su interpretación ha variado notablemente a lo largo del tiempo. En este trabajo se pretende realizar una aproximación historiográfica a esta interesante, pero indudablemente compleja, problemática. A través de un análisis diacrónico se mostrará cómo ha variado la importancia atribuida al elemento celta en la Protohistoria meridional, y cómo en la actualidad éste, si bien no es negado, se encuentra prácticamente ausente de las agendas investigadoras.The presence of celtic populations in the south of the Iberian Peninsula is a fact which has generally been accepted since the beginnings of modern linguistic and archaeological investigations. However, ideas and interpretations have varied notably. This work aims to carry out a historiographic approximation of this interesting but also undoubtedly complex problem. Through a diachronic analysis it will be shown how the importance attributed to the celtic element in the southern protohistory has varied. It will also be demonstrated how at present this issue, even though not denied, is practically absent from the research agendas

Contemporary and Past Perspectives

Boundaries are a complex topic, with different categories being distinguishable depending on the language and with a number of terms often used interchangeably. This discussion paper offers an overview on definitions and introduces different types of boundaries such as geographic, political and social. Drawing on disciplines as varied as border studies, international relations, post-/decolonial thought, and on examples from anthropological fieldwork, insights can be derived for archaeological approaches. In this context, the role of boundaries in the dynamic construction of ethnic identities is highlighted. A discussion of ancient Egyptian terms and concepts of political boundaries underlines the comparative potential of studies in premodern political thought and lived experience

Esencialismo, normativismo, posmodernismo: las interpretaciones sobre la etnicidad en la Arqueología española

En el marco del presente artículo se ofrece una perspectiva diacrónica de las formas en las que la Arqueología española ha abordado el estudio de la etnicidad pretérita y por ende de la imagen generada sobre los "pueblos" peninsulares. Para ello se comienza con un repaso de los antecedentes presentes en la historiografía de la Edad Moderna, para pasar posteriormente a las etapas iniciales de la disciplina, a la introducción del método de la escuela alemana y a la influencia del franquismo. Por último, en la parte final del trabajo se abordan las aproximaciones llevadas a cabo desde inicios de los años 1980, así como el notable interés y debate que viene generando la temática en el ámbito popular de la mano del desarrollo del Estado de las Autonomías.This article presents a diachronic view of the ways in which Spanish Archaeology has approached the study of past ethnicity and consequently the image this has created of the peninsular “peoples”. This article presents a diachronic view of the ways in which Spanish Archaeology has approached the study of past ethnicity and consequently the image this has created of the peninsular “peoples”. To this end we begin with a review of the precedents contained in the historiography of the Early Modern Period which will be followed by a look at the initial phases of the discipline, the introduction of the cultural-historical method of the German School and the influence of the Franco regime. La etnicidad desde una perspectiva arqueológica : propuestas teórico-metodológicas

Hacer hoy una ‘arqueología de la etnicidad’ es sin duda una tarea complicada, pero no imposible. Aunque los excesos de las primeras décadas del siglo XX siguen tiñendo de connotaciones negativas este campo de estudio, la redefinición del concepto de ‘etnicidad’ en disciplinas como la Antropología y la Sociología ofrece a arqueólogos e historiadores de la Antigüedad valiosos puntos de partida para una renovada aproximación a la problemática. Tras un breve repaso de la historia de la investigación, en este artículo se pretende plantear toda una serie de reflexiones y propuestas teórico-metodológicas que puedan contribuir a esta tarea de repensar la etnicidad.Developing an ‘archaeology of ethnicity’ today is, without a doubt, a difficult task, but not an impossible one. Although the excesses of the first decades of the 20th century have imbued this field of study with negative connotations, the redefinition of the concept of ‘ethnicity’ in disciplines such as Anthropology and Sociology provides archaeologists and ancient historians with valid starting points for a renewed approximation to the subject. Following a brief review of research history, this article attempts to put forward a set of theoretical-methodological reflections and proposals that may contribute to the task of rethinking ethnicity
