K₂O/Na₂O content as a possible index to the chronological sequence of some Precambrian igneous rocks of Missouri

    Get PDF
Flame photometric analyses for K₂O and Na₂O were run on 31 samples of the Precambrian igneous rocks of Missouri. Samples were collected from the field, physically prepared and dissolved by a standard method and a modified standard method of rapid silicate analyses. The K₂O, Na₂O values obtained are averages between two methods of analyses. The modified method reduces by 80% the time required to chemically digest a rock sample. The results for both methods are not significantly different. Curtin and Company Advanced Flame Photometer was used. Results have been plotted on graphs and a chronological sequence for the named Precambrian igneous rock units of Missouri is indicated. It is suggested that the Middlebrook Group belongs to a separate magmatic cycle; that the Van East, Musco, and Bevos Groups belong to the same magmatic cycle; and that the basic intrusive rocks belong to a separate magmatic cycle --Abstract, page ii

Variation in gold content of minerals of the Marysville quartz diorite stock, Montana

The purpose of this thesis was to study the amount and distribution of gold in the minerals of the Marysville quartz diorite stock, Montana. Twenty-eight rock samples were collected from various parts of the Marysville Stock, using a NS-EW grid sample pattern. Thirty additional samples were collected from selected localities and from the vicinity of the gold mines which occur around the periphery of the stock. By use of a hand magnet and a Frantz isodynamic separator, the magnetite, biotite, hornblende, and quartz-feldspar portions of the various rock samples were isolated and purified to between 90-99 percent purity. Eighteen thin sections of selected samples were made and studied. Because of the small quantity of gold believed to be present in the samples, neutron activation was chosen as the method of analysis --Abstract, page ii

Interpreting the images in a picture book: Students make connections to themselves, their lives and experiences

    Get PDF
Picture books are an important and accessible form of visual art for children because they offer, among other things, opportunities for making connections to personal experiences and to the values and beliefs of families and communities. This paper reports on the use of a picture book to promote Year 4 students\u27 making of text-to-self connections, which they expressed through visual art. A funds of knowledge (Moll, Amanti, Neff, & Gonzalez, 1992) lens was used to analyse the representation of students\u27 out-of-school lives and experiences within the artworks. In this paper, we argue for a pedagogical approach that creates opportunities for children to respond to picture books through visual art, identifying artworks as powerful avenues of insight into children\u27s funds of knowledge that can inform literacy pedagogy

A Framework for Computer Support in Managerial Decision Making

    Get PDF
As with many growing computer areas, the first attempts at developing a framework for the field were based on the software tools being built and the specific tasks undertaken. This paper attempts to draw decision support systems out of these early stages by proposing a more generally applicable framework for computer decision support. To build this framework the paper first examines existing dimensions in decision support system frameworks and evaluates them both in their ability to facilitate communication among researchers and designers The dimension degree of decisionstructure (unstructured vs structured) is borrowed from existing frameworks and incorporated into a new framework along with the dimension phase of decision mal ng process (intelligence, design, and choice). The proposed framework is then evaluated by the same two criteria used earlier in the paper

Variation In Gold Content Of Minerals Of The Marysville Quartz Diorite Stock, Montana

Neutron activation analysis for gold has been carried out on 135 mineral samples from throughout the Marysville stock with the following results: (1) the gold content of 44 biotite ranges from 0·002 to 0·924 ppm with an average of 0·076 ppm; (2) 37 hornblende samples gave a range of 0·003-0·823 ppm and an average of 0·100 ppm; (3) for 44 magnetite samples the range was 0·003-0·329 ppm and the average 0·037 ppm; (4) 10 quartz-feldspar samples varied from 0·006 to 0·176 ppm with an average of 0·065 ppm. High gold values mainly occur near the edge of the stock and the lowest values in the center of the stock. The highest values are found near the old gold mines located along the periphery of the stock. Because it could not form bonds in crystallizing minerals, the gold was concentrated in the residual fluids of the Marysville magma and was finally deposited in quartz veins at the edge of the stock. The gold in the minerals is probably entrapped as uncharged gold atoms. The amount of gold in a given mineral was determined by the structure of the mineral and the concentration of gold in the magma at the time of crystallization of that mineral. © 1967
