Lepton mixing angle with a horizontal symmetry
We discuss a model for the lepton sector based on the seesaw mechanism and on
a family symmetry. The model predicts the mixing angle to
vanish. The solar mixing angle is free--it will in general be
large if one does not invoke finetuning. The model has an enlarged scalar
sector with three Higgs doublets, together with two real scalar gauge singlets
() which have vacuum expectation values _0\theta_{23}\tan
\theta_{23} = _0, and it is maximal if the Lagrangian is
-invariant; but may be broken softly, by a term of dimension two in
the scalar potential, and then < \chi_2_0 becomes different from < \chi_1_0.
Thus, the strength of the soft breaking controls the deviation of
from . The model predicts a normal neutrino mass
spectrum () and allows successful leptogenesis if ; these properties of the model are independent of
the presence and strength of the soft breaking.Comment: 13 pages, one figur
Neutrino Phenomenology, Dark Energy and Leptogenesis from pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone Bosons
We consider a model of dynamical neutrino masses via the see-saw mechanism.
Nambu-Goldstone bosons (majorons) arise associated with the formation of the
heavy right-handed majorana masses. These bosons then acquire naturally soft
masses (become pNGB's) at loop level via the Higgs-Yukawa mass terms. These
models, like the original neutrino pNGB quintessence schemes of the 1980's that
proceed through the Dirac masses, are natural, have cosmological implications
through mass varying neutrinos, long range forces, and provide a soft potential
for dark energy. We further argue that these models can explain leptogenesis
naturally through the decays of the right-handed neutrinos.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figure
Nonlinear Realization of N=2 Superconformal Symmetry and Brane Effective Actions
Due to the incompatibility of the nonlinear realization of superconformal
symmetry and dilatation symmetry with the dilaton as the compensator field, in
the present paper it shows an alternative mechanism of spontaneous breaking the
N=2 superconformal symmetry to the N=0 case. By using the approach of nonlinear
transformations it is found that it leads to a space-filling brane theory with
Weyl scale W(1,3) symmetry. The dynamics of the resulting Weyl scale invariant
brane, along with that of other Nambu-Goldstone fields, is derived in terms of
the building blocks of the vierbein and the covariant derivative from the
Maurer-Cartan oneforms. A general coupling of the matter fields localized on
the brane world volume to these NG fields is also constructed.Comment: 22 pages, more references and comments are adde
Calculation of Reggeon Vertices in QCD
The method of calculation of effective vertices of interaction of the
Reggeized gluon and quark with particles in QCD in the next-to-leading order is
developed. The method is demonstrated in the case of already known vertices of
both gluon-gluon and quark-quark transitions in the scattering of gluons and
quarks on the Reggeized gluon. It is used for the calculation of the
gluon-quark transition in the scattering on the Reggeized quark.Comment: 27 pages, LaTex, 1 figure, uses axodraw.st
Dilaton gravity approach to three dimensional Lifshitz black hole
The z=3 Lifshitz black hole is an exact black hole solution to the new
massive gravity in three dimensions. In order to understand this black hole
clearly, we perform a dimensional reduction to two dimensional dilaton gravity
by utilizing the circular symmetry. Considering the linear dilaton, we find the
same Lifshitz black hole in two dimensions. This implies that all thermodynamic
quantities of the z=3 Lifshitz black hole could be obtained from its
corresponding black hole in two dimensions. As a result, we derive the
temperature, mass, heat capacity, Bekesnstein-Hawking entropy, and free energy.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, version to appear in EPJ
Quantum measurement in a family of hidden-variable theories
The measurement process for hidden-configuration formulations of quantum
mechanics is analysed. It is shown how a satisfactory description of quantum
measurement can be given in this framework. The unified treatment of
hidden-configuration theories, including Bohmian mechanics and Nelson's
stochastic mechanics, helps in understanding the true reasons why the problem
of quantum measurement can succesfully be solved within such theories.Comment: 16 pages, LaTeX; all special macros are included in the file; a

Decoherence of Histories and Hydrodynamic Equations for a Linear Oscillator Chain
We investigate the decoherence of histories of local densities for linear
oscillators models. It is shown that histories of local number, momentum and
energy density are approximately decoherent, when coarse-grained over
sufficiently large volumes. Decoherence arises directly from the proximity of
these variables to exactly conserved quantities (which are exactly decoherent),
and not from environmentally-induced decoherence. We discuss the approach to
local equilibrium and the subsequent emergence of hydrodynamic equations for
the local densities.Comment: 37 pages, RevTe
Summer CO2 evasion from streams and rivers in the Kolyma River basin, north-east Siberia
Inland water systems are generally supersaturated in carbon dioxide (CO2) and are increasingly recognized as playing an important role in the global carbon cycle. The Arctic may be particularly important in this respect, given the abundance of inland waters and carbon contained in Arctic soils; however, a lack of trace gas measurements from small streams in the Arctic currently limits this understanding. We investigated the spatial variability of CO2 evasion during the summer low-flow period from streams and rivers in the northern portion of the Kolyma River basin in north-eastern Siberia. To this end, partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) and gas exchange velocities (k) were measured at a diverse set of streams and rivers to calculate CO2 evasion fluxes.
We combined these CO2 evasion estimates with satellite remote sensing and geographic information system techniques to calculate total areal CO2 emissions. Our results show that small streams are substantial sources of atmospheric CO2 owing to high pCO2 and k, despite being a small portion of total inland water surface area. In contrast, large rivers were generally near equilibrium with atmospheric CO2. Extrapolating our findings across the Panteleikha-Ambolikha sub-watersheds demonstrated that small streams play a major role in CO2 evasion, accounting for 86% of the total summer CO2 emissions from inland waters within these two sub-watersheds. Further expansion of these regional CO2 emission estimates across time and space will be critical to accurately quantify and understand the role of Arctic streams and rivers in the global carbon budget
Gravitation and inertia; a rearrangement of vacuum in gravity
We address the gravitation and inertia in the framework of 'general gauge
principle', which accounts for 'gravitation gauge group' generated by hidden
local internal symmetry implemented on the flat space. We connect this group to
nonlinear realization of the Lie group of 'distortion' of local internal
properties of six-dimensional flat space, which is assumed as a toy model
underlying four-dimensional Minkowski space. The agreement between proposed
gravitational theory and available observational verifications is satisfactory.
We construct relativistic field theory of inertia and derive the relativistic
law of inertia. This theory furnishes justification for introduction of the
Principle of Equivalence. We address the rearrangement of vacuum state in
gravity resulting from these ideas.Comment: 17 pages, no figures, revtex4, Accepted for publication in Astrophys.

Absorption cross section in Lifshitz black hole
We derive the absorption cross section of a minimally coupled scalar in the
Lifshitz black hole obtained from the new massive gravity. The absorption cross
section reduces to the horizon area in the low energy and massless limit of
s-wave mode propagation, indicating that the Lifshitz black hole also satisfies
the universality of low energy absorption cross section for black holes.Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, version to appear in EPJ
