The rise of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been supported by the media, which have included this element of management in the news. Spanish Public Service Television faces the challenge to adapt and to adjust to the current expansion and consolidation of the global digital media. At the moment, RTVE lacks of stable solutions to the contradictions of editorial control, financial management, content and corporate governance, which makes difficult to establish the vision, the mission and the strategies to follow up. The modernization of the legal system, the autonomy of the newsroom and the excellent management of the digital channels are positive developments. However, the main policies maintain the given situation before these positive changes. Why? They do not appear linked in a common. Funding remains a thorny issue. The freedom that promotes the European Commission in the definition of public service broadcasting degenerates, in the Spanish case, in the uncertainty about the content and means of payment. The new audiovisual authority is called to lead these issues and establish parameters homogeneous in the European environment. The Spanish Government starts a new project that will have to lay the groundwork for the mission, the dynamics and scope of RTVE and, by extension, regional operators. Now is the time to think about where we want to steer public television in the next ten years

Globalization and power: The consolidation of international communication as a discipline. Review article

    Get PDF
A tour of the theoretical development and the main research lines of international communication is presented. To do this, the appearance of communication in the configuration of power in four aspects (hard, soft, sharp and strategic narrative) is analyzed. The critical perspective and the Anglo-Saxon mastery on the subject are examined, with evidence from France, Germany, or Latin America. Five axes of future research are anticipated, such as the strengthening of the theoretical and methodological bases with interdisciplinary methods; the nature and characteristics of the international journalists (correspondents versus false news); the management of populist communication in the face of a political globalization with leaders that hinder the conventional journalistic ethos; the analysis of the structures; and global information systems in a multipolar scenario and less “CNN effect” than expected, and the constant innovation dynamics of propaganda

    Brand activism

In this work, brand activism is defined as a strategy that seeks to influence citizen-consumers by means of campaigns created and sustained by political values. It involves a transformation in corporate communication management and social responsibility practices, which borrows from those of social movements to contribute to the social production of identity of citizen-consumers. This corporate political shift involves the use of messages, slogans and content based on final (of common interest) or instrumental (linked to the industry in which they are applied) political values. Political behaviour does not operate in a vacuum but is the response to a change in values of the young generations employing digital technologies and demanding a different behaviour from global firms. However, these political advertising practices have been heavily criticised in the field of political economy, insofar as it is contended that they are impostures lacking authenticity. Thus, 45 campaigns were analysed to determine the characteristics of brand activism in this new socio-political context. From the results it follows that this activist practice, of Anglo-Saxon origin, is a relevant trend in political communication because it aligns individual identity, the management of public assets and corporate action in the political sphere

This paper explores the challenges of Generative AI technologies to China’s diplomatic engagement worldwide. First, it examines the discourse in China about the development of ChatGPT, by focusing on the treatment of the technology and the possible risks and opportunities regarding international affairs. Second, the article highlights four challenges: (1) the securitization of AI, where import/export controls, data access, and semiconductors open a new field of research; (2) the (techno-) socialism with Chinese characteristics and the response to the arrival of cutting-edge technologies from U.S. capital and their impact on the development of a local model; (3) the soft censorship: the development of a technology that responds in the "correct" way (i.e., in line with the ruling ideology) by discriminating the suitability of sources/data deemed correct and appropriate for the public sphere; (4) the impact on public diplomacy, as AI projects an aura of innovation and technological reputation. In summary, this paper contributes to the theoretical debate on the challenges posed by Generative IA technologies in the context of China’s diplomatic practices

    Horizons of public information

Public information, including the right to know and the right to transparency, is one of the main topics in academic research and professional development. It is usually analyzed on three epistemological levels: constitutional, governance, and media citizenship. It is thought-provoking to the extent that we find a strong tension between transparency and confidentiality, when rebuilding trust in the public sphere. Using this information we can predict new areas of work, such as the quality data processes, literacy, integrity, and traceability of such data and the emergence of new professions in public communications
