Formality conjecture for minimal surfaces of Kodaira dimension 0

    Get PDF
Let be a polystable sheaf on a smooth minimal projective surface of Kodaira dimension 0. Then the differential graded (DG) Lie algebra of derived endomorphisms of is formal. The proof is based on the study of equivariant minimal models of DG Lie algebras equipped with a cyclic structure of degree 2 which is non-degenerate in cohomology, and does not rely (even for K3 surfaces) on previous results on the same subject

In this paper we construct a simply connected, minimal, complex surface of general type with p_g=0 and K^2=2 using a rational blow-down surgery and Q-Gorenstein smoothing theory.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures. To appear in Inventiones Mathematica

DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND EVALUATION OF A THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY METER BASED ON ASTM E1225 STANDARD

The focus of this work is the design, construction and evaluation of a thermal conductivity meter apparatus based on ASTM E- 1225 standard. The thermal conductivity is a heat-transport propriety and with the development of new materials the determination of thermophysical properties for its correct use becomes necessary. The apparatus was projected in CAD software and the material selection was done following the standard recommendations. For the meter bars were used 304 stainless steel, since its thermal conductivity is known. The heater was made with an aluminum cylinder block and a cartridge electric resistance. The cooling system was assembled using a Peltier thermoelectric plate and a fin heat sink equipped with a fan. Lastly, a steel pipe was used for building the guard cylinder. In order to evaluate the apparatus, the first specimen tested was the 304 stainless steel, the same material as the meter bars. The result of thermal conductivity showed an error of 6% relative to the value found in literature. However, in this test the temperature of isothermal guard cylinder was lower than the temperature required by the standard. Thus, the future goals will be the development of a temperature control for the guard cylinder and realization of more tests with different materials

A crustal seismic profile across Sicily

A crustal reflection seismic profile, more than 100 km long, was recorded across central Sicily, from the Tyrrhenian shore to the Sicily Channel, to understand the deep structures and the collision mechanisms between Europe and Africa and the subsequent geodynamic evolution. The profile was acquired using explosive sources and 240 active channels recorded by a Sercel 408-XL, 24 bits A/D converter, with a 12 km spread and a 24-fold coverage. The data were processed following a non-conventional procedure in order to preserve the relative amplitudes of the reflections and to better investigate the Sicily deep structures down to the Moho. The main highlighted structures are the dramatic flexure of the Iblean crust, the huge, deeper than expected, trough of Caltanissetta consisting of deep seated thrusts and nappes, and the imbricate thrust system of rigid bodies characterizing the northern Maghrebian chain. We designed an ad hoc acquisition and processing in order to highlight these main geological features in the seismic stacked section. Moreover, the deepest parts of the Caltanissetta trough are imaged for the first time, and its bottom is now fixed at more than 7 s TWT. The giant crustal wedge flexuring the Iblean foreland and the Moho geometries are examinated

Altered Immunoregulation in Rheumatoid Arthritis: The Role of Regulatory T Cells and Proinflammatory Th17 Cells and Therapeutic Implications

    Get PDF
In recent years several studies investigated the role of T lymphocyte subpopulations in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Pathogenic Th17 cells mediate pannus growth, osteoclastogenesis, and synovial neoangiogenesis; hence they are key players in the development of the disease. On the other hand, regulatory T (Treg) cells are a T cell subset whose peculiar function is to suppress autoreactive lymphocytes. The imbalance between Th17 and Treg cells has been identified as a crucial event in the pathogenesis of RA. In addition, the effects of currently employed RA therapeutic strategies on these lymphocyte subpopulations have been extensively investigated. This review article aims to discuss current knowledge on Treg and Th17 cells in RA and possible implications of their therapeutic targeting in this disorder

Autopsy findings in COVID-19-related deaths. A literature review

    Get PDF
Although many clinical reports have been published, little is known about the pathological post-mortem findings from people who have died of the novel coronavirus disease. The need for postmortem information is urgent to improve patient management of mild and severe illness, and treatment strategies. The present systematic review was carried out according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review (PRISMA) standards. A systematic literature search and a critical review of the collected studies were conducted. An electronic search of PubMed, Science Direct Scopus, Google Scholar, and Excerpta Medica Database (EMBASE) from database inception to June 2020 was performed. We found 28 scientific papers; the total amount of cases is 341. The major histological feature in the lung is diffuse alveolar damage with hyaline membrane formation, alongside microthrombi in small pulmonary vessels. It appears that there is a high incidence of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism among COVID-19 decedents, suggesting endothelial involvement, but more studies are needed. A uniform COVID-19 post-mortem diagnostic protocol has not yet been developed. In a time in which international collaboration is essential, standardized diagnostic criteria are fundamental requirements

    Fowl typhoid in Argentine Republic

After a Typhoid outbreak in a farm with 100.000 birds in production in cages (50% Leghorn and 50% AA-Harco), 8,38% of positive reactors to the quick agglutination test (Harco) were transferred to an individual house also in cages. After 50 negative coprocultures, the birds are again assayed by the same test 30-60-90 and 120 days after, finding that said positives decreased from 100 to 32%. No difference was noted during that period with the similar lot. After that time, 30 birds are challenged with a virulent strain and only 1% die of Typhoid; as compared with the control group where mortality was 50%. These facts are statistically analyzed finding that the agglutination test should not be used with the same criteria as for pullorum, since, according to the findings, its value is quite relative. At the same time, immunological considerations were effected on the possible importance of Ig G and Ig A in the defense mechanisms of birds against infections caused by enterobacteria.Facultad de Ciencias Veterinaria
