Advanced vehicle separation apparatus
A method of obtaining test data from two independent models or bodies in a conventional wind tunnel is described. The system makes efficient use of wind tunnel test time with computer control performing complex coordinate transformations necessary for model positioning. The apparatus is designed to be used in any of the three Unitary Wind Tunnels at NASA-Ames Research Center. Mechanical design details and a brief description of the control system for the separation apparatus are presented

Quantum State Reconstruction of a Bose-Einstein Condensate
We propose a tomographic scheme to reconstruct the quantum state of a
Bose-Einstein condensate, exploiting the radiation field as a probe and
considering the atomic internal degrees of freedom. The density matrix in the
number state basis can be directly retrieved from the atom counting
probabilities.Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX file, no figures, to appear in Europhysics Letter
Molecular detection of parasites (Trematoda, Digenea: Bucephalidae and Monorchiidae) in the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis (Mollusca: Bivalvia)
Members of the globally distributed bivalve family Ostreidae (oysters) have a significant role in marine ecosystems and include species of high economic importance. In this work, we report the occurrence of digenean parasites of the families Bucephalidae (Prosorhynchoides sp.) and Monorchiidae (Postmonorchis sp.) in Mediterranean native populations of Ostrea edulis (but not in the introduced Magallana gigas). Molecular detection was based on DNA sequencing of the ribosomal intergenic spacer 2 (ITS2) marker. The importance of detecting the presence of overlooked digenean parasites in Mediterranean oysters is discussed. © 2018 The Author(s). Project Manager and Systems Engineer: a literature rich reflection on roles and responsibilities
There are several definitions of Systems Engineering (SE) in the literature, each with different definitions of its relationship with Project Management (PM), causing a great deal of misunderstanding. The paper offers a broad and critical discussion of the relevant literature with a deep reflection concerning the historical evolution and state-of-the-art of both the definition of SE and its relationship with PM. This endeavor provides two main results: (i) a conceptual framework to define SE in a project based environment and (ii) a model to identify the best formal interaction between the Project Manager and System Engineer based on the project characteristics
Electron-radiation interaction in a Penning trap: beyond the dipole approximation
We investigate the physics of a single trapped electron interacting with a
radiation field without the dipole approximation. This gives new physical
insights in the so-called geonium theory.Comment: 12 pages, RevTeX, 6 figures, Approved for publication in Phys. Rev.
Synthesis and characterization of entangled mesoscopic superpositions for a trapped electron
We propose a scheme for the generation and reconstruction of entangled states
between the internal and external (motional) degrees of freedom of a trapped
electron. Such states also exhibit quantum coherence at a mesoscopic level.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, RevTeX (twocolumn
Entangled light pulses from single cold atoms
The coherent interaction between a laser-driven single trapped atom and an
optical high-finesse resonator allows to produce entangled multi-photon light
pulses on demand. The mechanism is based on the mechanical effect of light. The
degree of entanglement can be controlled through the parameters of the laser
excitation. Experimental realization of the scheme is within reach of current
technology. A variation of the technique allows for controlled generation of
entangled subsequent pulses, with the atomic motion serving as intermediate
memory of the quantum state.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, revised version (new scheme for generation of
subsequent pairs of entangled pulses included). Accepted for publication in

Overcoming the false-minima problem in direct methods: Structure determination of the packaging enzyme P4 from bacteriophage φ13
The problems encountered during the phasing and structure determination of the packaging enzyme P4 from bacteriophage φ13 using the anomalous signal from selenium in a single-wavelength anomalous dispersion experiment (SAD) are described. The oligomeric state of P4 in the virus is a hexamer (with sixfold rotational symmetry) and it crystallizes in space group C2, with four hexamers in the crystallographic asymmetric unit. Current state-of-the-art ab initio phasing software yielded solutions consisting of 96 atoms arranged as sixfold symmetric clusters of Se atoms. However, although these solutions showed high correlation coefficients indicative that the substructure had been solved, the resulting phases produced uninterpretable electron-density maps. Only after further analysis were correct solutions found (also of 96 atoms), leading to the eventual identification of the positions of 120 Se atoms. Here, it is demonstrated how the difficulties in finding a correct phase solution arise from an intricate false-minima problem. © 2005 International Union of Crystallography - all rights reserved
The Pauli Equation for Probability Distributions
The "marginal" distributions for measurable coordinate and spin projection is
introduced. Then, the analog of the Pauli equation for spin-1/2 particle is
obtained for such probability distributions instead of the usual wave
functions. That allows a classical-like approach to quantum mechanics. Some
illuminating examples are presented.Comment: 14 pages, ReVTe
