    Adsorption of Externally Stretched Two-Dimensional Flexible and Semi-flexible Polymers near an Attractive Wall

    We study analytically a model of a two dimensional, partially directed, flexible or semiflexible polymer, attached to an attractive wall which is perpendicular to the preferred direction. In addition, the polymer is stretched by an externally applied force. We find that the wall has a dramatic effect on the polymer. For wall attraction smaller than the non-sequential nearest neighbor attraction, the fraction of monomers at the wall is zero and the model is the same as that of a polymer without a wall. However, for greater than, the fraction of monomers at the wall undergoes a first order transition from unity at low temperature and small force, to zero at higher temperatures and forces. We present phase diagram for this transition. Our results are confirmed by Monte-Carlo simulations.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure

    Interplay between antiferromagnetic order and spin polarization in ferromagnetic metal/electron-doped cuprate superconductor junctions

    Recently we proposed a theory of point-contact spectroscopy and argued that the splitting of zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in electron-doped cuprate superconductor point-contact spectroscopy is due to the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) and d-wave superconducting orders [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 76}, 220504(R) (2007)]. Here we extend the theory to study the tunneling in the ferromagnetic metal/electron-doped cuprate superconductor (FM/EDSC) junctions. In addition to the AF order, the effects of spin polarization, Fermi-wave vector mismatch (FWM) between the FM and EDSC regions, and effective barrier are investigated. It is shown that there exits midgap surface state (MSS) contribution to the conductance to which Andreev reflections are largely modified due to the interplay between the exchange field of ferromagnetic metal and the AF order in EDSC. Low-energy anomalous conductance enhancement can occur which could further test the existence of AF order in EDSC. Finally, we propose a more accurate formula in determining the spin polarization value in combination with the point-contact conductance data.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure

    The Response Phase - The First Six Hours After Acute Airway Injury by SO2 Inhalation: An in vivo and in vitro Study

    We have identified an airway epithelial response following acute injury that cannot be termed \u27repair\u27 or regeneration. It precedes these well characterized events and it is termed the \u27response phase\u27. We tested the hypothesis that for the first 6 h following acute injury to the tracheal mucosa, the initial cellular events of the response phase will continue as in vivo even if the tissue is maintained in vitro in an Ussing chamber. The tracheal mucosa of anesthetized, intubated mongrel dogs was injured by the inhalation of SO2 500 ppm for 1 h (7 dogs); controls (3 dogs) breathed filtered, compressed air for 1 h. 4 dogs were killed, in pairs, at 1 and 6 h after 500ppm of SO2; their tracheas were removed and fixed for microscopic examination. 3 dogs were killed immediately after the SO2 exposure, their tracheas were removed and epithelium isolated from the posterior-membranous sheath was mounted in Ussing chambers in oxygenated, Krebs-Henseleit buffer (8 per dog with aperature area of 1.5 cm2). These tissues (and those from control dogs prepared identically) were fixed after 1 and 6 h incubation for microscopic examination. Epithelial damage was not observed in any controls but was in all tissues exposed to SO2. A wide spectrum of mucosal cell injury during the response phase was observed. The patterns of exfoliation noted were: individual cells, rows (several cells wide) of mucosal cells and entire regions (several hundred ÎŒm2). At 1 h after exposure, in some lesions, the injury is difficult to assess because the tracheal surface was either blanketed in exfoliated cells or appeared in total disarray. By 6 h, the lesions were well defined and large flattened cells (130 ÎŒm2 in surface area) covered the basement membrane in areas where mucosal cells had exfoliated. Some ciliated cells still remained attached at their base in these areas. These were the findings whether the tissues were taken fresh from the animal or have been maintained in Ussing chambers for up to 6 h. These results show that cellular repair of the tracheal epithelium can be studied in vitro during the first 6 h after injury, even if the injury has occurred in situ

    Moyal star product approach to the Bohr-Sommerfeld approximation

    The Bohr-Sommerfeld approximation to the eigenvalues of a one-dimensional quantum Hamiltonian is derived through order ℏ2\hbar^2 (i.e., including the first correction term beyond the usual result) by means of the Moyal star product. The Hamiltonian need only have a Weyl transform (or symbol) that is a power series in ℏ\hbar, starting with ℏ0\hbar^0, with a generic fixed point in phase space. The Hamiltonian is not restricted to the kinetic-plus-potential form. The method involves transforming the Hamiltonian to a normal form, in which it becomes a function of the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian. Diagrammatic and other techniques with potential applications to other normal form problems are presented for manipulating higher order terms in the Moyal series.Comment: 27 pages, no figure

    Are the New Physics Contributions from the Left-Right Symmetric Model Important for the Indirect CP Violation in the Neutral B Mesons?

    Several works analyzing the new physics contributions from the Left-Right Symmetric Model to the CP violation phenomena in the neutral B mesons can be found in the literature. These works exhibit interesting and experimentally sensible deviations from the Standard Model predictions but at the expense of considering a low right scale \upsilon_R around 1 TeV. However, when we stick to the more conservative estimates for \upsilon_R which say that it must be at least 10^7 GeV, no experimentally sensible deviations from the Standard Model appear for indirect CP violation. This estimate for \upsilon_R arises when the generation of neutrino masses is considered. In spite of the fact that this scenario is much less interesting and says nothing new about both the CP violation phenomenon and the structure of the Left-Right Symmetric Model, this possibility must be taken into account for the sake of completeness and when considering the see-saw mechanism that provides masses to the neutrino sector.Comment: LaTex file. 19 pages, 4 figures.     An overview of nine disused Paleogene regional stages from Belgium is presented. Some of these regional chronostratigraphic units were already brought into use in the nineteenth century, but are nowadays considered ill defined and of no use in the light of the modern stratigraphic concepts. An overview of their definition and history is given, together with the argumentation for the abandonment of each unit and its present status. The disused chronostratigraphic units belong to the Paleocene, Eocene and Oligocene series

    Statistics of Gravitational Microlensing Magnification. I. Two-Dimensional Lens Distribution

    (Abridged) In this paper we refine the theory of microlensing for a planar distribution of point masses. We derive the macroimage magnification distribution P(A) at high magnification (A-1 >> tau^2) for a low optical depth (tau << 1) lens distribution by modeling the illumination pattern as a superposition of the patterns due to individual ``point mass plus weak shear'' lenses. We show that a point mass plus weak shear lens produces an astroid- shaped caustic and that the magnification cross-section obeys a simple scaling property. By convolving this cross-section with the shear distribution, we obtain a caustic-induced feature in P(A) which also exhibits a simple scaling property. This feature results in a 20% enhancement in P(A) at A approx 2/tau. In the low magnification (A-1 << 1) limit, the macroimage consists of a bright primary image and a large number of faint secondary images formed close to each of the point masses. Taking into account the correlations between the primary and secondary images, we derive P(A) for low A. The low-A distribution has a peak of amplitude ~ 1/tau^2 at A-1 ~ tau^2 and matches smoothly to the high-A distribution. We combine the high- and low-A results and obtain a practical semi-analytic expression for P(A). This semi-analytic distribution is in qualitative agreement with previous numerical results, but the latter show stronger caustic-induced features at moderate A for tau as small as 0.1. We resolve this discrepancy by re-examining the criterion for low optical depth. A simple argument shows that the fraction of caustics of individual lenses that merge with those of their neighbors is approx 1-exp(-8 tau). For tau=0.1, the fraction is surprisingly high: approx 55%.     Trends in oral anticoagulant prescribing in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a population-based study in the UK

    OBJECTIVE: To evaluate oral anticoagulant (OAC) prescribing trends in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the UK from 2001 to 2015. DESIGN: A cross-sectional drug utilisation study. SETTING: Electronic health records from The Health Improvement Network primary care database in the UK. PARTICIPANTS: Individuals with T2DM who received a record of OAC prescription. OUTCOME MEASURES: The prescribing trends of OAC medications in individuals with T2DM were examined from 2001 to 2015, stratified by age, gender and therapeutic classifications. RESULTS: A total of 361 635 individuals with T2DM were identified, of whom 36 570 were prescribed OAC from 2001 to 2015. The prevalence of OAC prescribing increased by 50.0%, from 1781 individuals receiving OAC prescriptions (IROACP) (4.4 (95% CI 4.2 to 4.6) per 100 persons) in 2001, to 17 070 IROACP (6.6 (95% CI 6.5 to 6.7) per 100 persons) in 2015. The prevalence of warfarin prescribing decreased by 14.0%, from 1761 individuals receiving warfarin prescriptions (IRWP) (98.9 (95% CI 98.4 to 99.4) per 100 persons) in 2001, to 14 533 IRWP (85.1 (95% CI 84.6 to 85.7) per 100 persons) in 2015. This corresponded with increased prescribing of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), from 18 individuals receiving DOAC prescriptions (IRDOACP) (0.1 (95% CI 0.08 to 0.23) per 100 persons) in 2010, to 3016 IRDOACP (17.6 (95% CI 17.1 to 18.2) per 100 persons) in 2015, during the same period. CONCLUSIONS: Prescribing of OACs in individuals with T2DM increased from 2001 to 2015. Since the introduction of DOACs, there has been a clear shift in prescribing towards these agents. Future studies are needed to assess the safety of coadministration of OAC medications and antidiabetic therapy with T2DM
