Optical properties and electronic band structure of topological insulators (on A5 2B6 3 compound based)
Cataloged from PDF version of article. We have performed a first principles study of structural, electronic, and optical properties of rhombohedral Sb2Te3 and Bi 2Te3 compounds using the density functional theory within the local density approximation. The lattice parameters, bulk modulus, and its pressure derivatives of these compounds have been obtained. The linear photon-energy dependent dielectric functions and some optical properties such as the energy-loss function, the effective number of valance electrons and the effective optical dielectric constant are calculated and presented in the study. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC
Mechanical, electronic and optical properties of Bi2S3 and Bi2Se3 compounds: first principle investigations
Cataloged from PDF version of article. The structural, mechanical, electronic, and optical properties of orthorhombic Bi2S3 and Bi2Se3 compounds have been investigated by means of first principles calculations. The calculated lattice parameters and internal coordinates are in very good agreement with the experimental findings. The elastic constants are obtained, then the secondary results such as bulk modulus, shear modulus, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, anisotropy factor, and Debye temperature of polycrystalline aggregates are derived, and the relevant mechanical properties are also discussed. Furthermore, the band structures and optical properties such as real and imaginary parts of dielectric functions, energy-loss function, the effective number of valance electrons, and the effective optical dielectric constant have been computed. We also calculated some non-linearities for Bi2S3 and Bi2Se3 (tensors of elasto-optical coefficients) under pressur
Electron Spectroscopy and the Electronic Structure of KNbO3: First Principle Calculations
Cataloged from PDF version of article. The electronic structures of KNbO(3)were calculated within the density functional theory, and their evolution was analyzed as the crystal-field symmetry changes from cubic to rhombohedral via tetragonal phase. We carried out electron-energy loss spectroscopy experiments by using synchrotron radiation and compared the results with the theoretical spectra calculated within Density Functional Theory. The dominant role of the NbO(6)octahedra in the formation of the energy spectra of KNbO(3)compound was demonstrated. The anomalous behavior of plasmons in ferroelectrics was exhibited by the function representing the characteristic energy loss in the region of phase transition
Structure, bonding and morphology of hydrothermally synthesised xonotlite
The authors have systematically investigated the role of synthesis conditions upon the structure and morphology of xonotlite. Starting with a mechanochemically prepared, semicrystalline phase with Ca/Si=1, the authors have prepared a series of xonotlite samples hydrothermally, at temperatures between 200 and 250 degrees C. Analysis in each case was by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, environmental scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The authors’ use of a much lower water/solid ratio has indirectly confirmed the ‘through solution’ mechanism of xonotlite formation, where silicate dissolution is a key precursor of xonotlite formation. Concerning the role of temperature, too low a temperature (~200 degrees C) fails to yield xonotlite or leads to increased number of structural defects in the silicate chains of xonotlite and too high a temperature (>250 degrees C) leads to degradation of the xonotlite structure, through leaching of interchain calcium. Synthesis duration meanwhile leads to increased silicate polymerisation due to diminishing of the defects in the silicate chains and more perfect crystal morphologies
Probing New Physics Models of Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay with SuperNEMO
The possibility to probe new physics scenarios of light Majorana neutrino
exchange and right-handed currents at the planned next generation neutrinoless
double beta decay experiment SuperNEMO is discussed. Its ability to study
different isotopes and track the outgoing electrons provides the means to
discriminate different underlying mechanisms for the neutrinoless double beta
decay by measuring the decay half-life and the electron angular and energy
distributions.Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, to be published in E.P.J.
Challenges facing an understanding of the nature of low-energy excited states in photosynthesis
© 2016 Elsevier B.V. While the majority of the photochemical states and pathways related to the biological capture of solar energy are now well understood and provide paradigms for artificial device design, additional low-energy states have been discovered in many systems with obscure origins and significance. However, as low-energy states are naively expected to be critical to function, these observations pose important challenges. A review of known properties of low energy states covering eight photochemical systems, and options for their interpretation, are presented. A concerted experimental and theoretical research strategy is suggested and outlined, this being aimed at providing a fully comprehensive understanding
Free-standing polyelectrolyte membranes made of chitosan and alginate
Free-standing films have increasing applications in the biomedical field as drug delivery systems for wound healing and tissue engineering. Here, we prepared free-standing membranes by the layer-by-layer assembly of chitosan and alginate, two widely used biomaterials. Our aim was to produce a thick membrane and to study the permeation of model drugs and the adhesion of muscle cells. We first defined the optimal growth conditions in terms of pH and alginate concentration. The membranes could be easily detached from polystyrene or polypropylene substrate without any postprocessing step. The dry thickness was varied over a large range from 4 to 35 μm. A 2-fold swelling was observed by confocal microscopy when they were immersed in PBS. In addition, we quantified the permeation of model drugs (fluorescent dextrans) through the free-standing membrane, which depended on the dextran molecular weight. Finally, we showed that myoblast cells exhibited a preferential adhesion on the alginate-ending membrane as compared to the chitosan-ending membrane or to the substrate side. This work was financially supported by Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through the Scholarship SFRH/BD/64601/2009 granted to S.G.C.
