Recently there has been an increase in the research of Hyaluronic Acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid is a non-sulfated, high molecular weight glycosaminoglycan found in the connective tissue of vertebrates. HA is the most abundant glycosaminoglycan of extracellular matrix of soft periodontal tissues.
Due to its unique physiochemical properties and its non-immunogenicity, hyaluronan has been proved to have some advantages in various medical applications and in the treatment of inflammatory conditions.
HA can be injected intradermally or can be used topically and it has been used as a dermal filler for cosmetic dermatology; in formation of scars in surgical procedures; in orthopedics for the treatment of osteoarthritis; in ophthalmology for the treatment of cataracts and it has also been explored in the field of tissue engineering. More recently, HA has been investigated as a pharmacological agent for treatments in Dentistry due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties
The Quest for Biomarkers from Acute Disease to Disease Resolution
Background: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an inflammatory disease of the pancreas with incompletely known pathogenic mechanisms. This study aimed to explore the temporal changes in serum cytokines in patients with AP and to assess the association of these changes with disease severity. Methods: Fifty patients hospitalized with AP were enrolled, and their serum cytokine levels were analyzed at four different time points. A healthy control (HC) group of 30 outpatients was included. Results: AP patients showed increased levels of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, IL-10, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, and monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1 at admission when compared with HC. IL-6, VEGF, and EGF remained elevated 1 month after hospitalization and 6 months after discharge. Conclusions the Bedside Index of Severity in Acute Pancreatitis (BISAP) and severity classification of the revised Atlanta classification system, IL-6 and VEGF, determined 48 h after hospitalization, were the two cytokines consistently elevated in the most severe patients. Increased levels of IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-alpha at admission and MCP-1 48 h after admission are also related to the length of hospital stay. Conclusions: Our study highlights the role cytokines play in the pathogenesis of AP and can be useful in the development of future drug trials for AP.publishersversionpublishe
Tese de mestrado, Design de comunicação e novos media, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Belas Artes, 2013Based on the proposal for a critical research laboratory in communication design, we propose a theoretical and projectual model acting in the various extensions of design in the context of the network culture. Assuming that the network culture is the exponent of contemporary communication, this paper seeks to examine the extent in which transdisciplinarity contributes to the widening of the field of action and research of communication desig
saúde pública e à prevenção do contágio.
As
The COVID-19 pandemic brought the need to take measures to promote public health and prevent
contagion. All sports shows, including football matches, were banned from access by the public,
taking place without fans in the stands. This exploratory study, with a quantitative and qualitative
approach, aimed to know how football fans perceived the impact that the ban on the public in
football stadiums had on their well-being. A total of 431 football fans (71% men) living in Portugal,
aged between 18 and 74 years old, participated in this investigation. Data were collected through
an online questionnaire, which included questions on sociodemographic characterization and
characterization of the type of supporter; Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS) and Mental
Health Continnum Short Form (MHCF-SF), adapted to assess subjective well-being in this context,
as well as some open-ended questions. It was concluded that the ban on the public in football
stadiums had a negative impact on the subjective well-being of supporters, especially on
participants with a high degree of affection for the club. The themes emerging from the content
analysis process proved the negative effects on subjective well-being, highlighting the areas in
which it was most felt, namely in the change and break of routines, the perceived feelings and
emotions and the impossibility of expressing support for the team. The implications of the study
refer to the importance that attending football matches in person has on the subjective well-being
of the respective supporters. Future investigations are necessary to support these results, studying
in more depth the impact that football has on the well-being of its fans, regardless of the pandemic
context that framed our investigation
