High mobility of Polish women. The ethnographic inquiry of Barcelona

This article analyses migration narratives of a small group of Polish female “ repeat migrants ” currently residing in Barcelona. Before settling there they lived in at least three other countries. I argue that repeat migrants experience many challenges: learning multiple languages, integrat- ing into multiple labour markets, building multiple social networks, and adapting to cultural contexts. I asked whether these challenges have resulted in increased integration in the host societies or integration into international expatriate communities. The main ndings are that the two main subgroups were 1) women who adapted well to life in Barcelona because of their Catalan partners and 2) women with international partners who tended to live in clusters of internationals. Polish immigrant women in my eldwork perceived themselves as outsiders unless they quickly learned Spanish and Catalan. I also argue that the availability of different kinds of Urry’s mobilities might in uence and facilitate decisions on becoming more mobileInternational Migratio

Post-accession Female Mobility between Poland and Norway. New Trends and New Ways of Thinking about MigrationThis paper presents recent research on Polish female migration to Norway. We focus our discussion of existing literature on this subject on issues of gendered migration trajectories, children and adult education, career paths of migrant women, and the effects of migration on families and communities in Norway and Poland. There are many thematic and methodological gaps in recent scholarship on migration of Polish women to Norway despite an increased number of research projects and publications. Most scholars center on social attitudes towards migration, and consequently decisions on migration made by women and their families. Poakcesyjna mobilność kobiet pomiędzy Polską a Norwegią. Nowe kierunki myślenia o migracjiW tekście przedstawiamy trendy w badaniach migracji Polek do Norwegii we współczesnej literaturze. Mimo wzrostu liczby projektów badawczych i publikacji naukowych dotyczących ostatnich migracji Polaków do Norwegii wiele aspektów życia Polek-migrantek nie zostało dotąd przeanalizowanych

Medical Travels of Polish Female Migrants in Europe

The article discusses the medical travel (medical tourism) of Polish women migrants based on a study conducted between 2008 and 2011 on Polish women who migrated to London, Barcelona, and Berlin. The author argues that the principal reasons for medical travel to Poland are the lower costs of private treatment, the relatively easy access to specialised health care, and personal comfort derived from linguistic and cultural competency. The women in the study who travelled to Poland for medical treatment combined the economic resources acquired while living abroad with their knowledge of the cultural and medical system in Poland to choose the best options for them. The treatments they sought included gynaecological, dental, and other specialised treatments, for which they turned to the private health sector in Poland. Some of the women also sought treatment in other countries. The women in the study highlighted the advantages of medical travel and mobility while also reflected on the dilemmas they faced in choosing the best care. The author argues that medical travel poses a challenge to the national borders of health-care systems and the national availability of medical procedures, and found that while such mobility generates inequalities it also leads to greater agency and creativeness on the part of patients when they challenge the given regulations, authority, and expert knowledge in one country.89791

CHANGES OF CULINARY PRACTICES AMONG POLISH MIGRANT WOMEN IN BARCELONA AND BERLIN

    No full text
Migracja do innych społeczności etnicznych powoduje zetknięcie z odmiennym stylem życia, zwyczajami żywieniowymi, porami posiłków i produktami. Prowadzi to do kwestionowania własnych zwyczajów i przyjmowania w różnym stopniu nowych. Badanie praktyk kulinarnych pozwala mi zadać pytania o kwestie tożsamości, integracji, związków z krajem rodzinnym, transferu praktyk, zmiany stylu życia i stosunku do ciała oraz dbania o zdrowie.Migration to another ethnic community leads to encounters with other styles of living, eating habits, meals’ schedule and food products. It leads to questioning own practices and accepting new ones to varying degrees. The objective of this paper is to analyze local culinary practices taken by Polish migrant women from local communities in Barcelona and Berlin. I also question the reasons and ways of maintaining Polish and family-based culinary traditions as well as gustatory nostalgia for Polish dishes and food ingredients. I argue that some Polish migrants incorporate local culinary trends such as eating local, regional and bio foods into their diet. This article is based on ethnographic research among a heterogeneous group of Polish migrant women living in Barcelona and Berlin, conducted since 2010. My research of culinary practices gives an insight into questions of identity, integration, connection with one’s homeland, transfer of practices, change of style of living, attitude towards own body and caring for one’s own health
