An ATP and Oxalate Generating Variant Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle Counters Aluminum Toxicity in Pseudomonas fluorescens
Although the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle is essential in almost all aerobic organisms, its precise modulation and integration in global cellular metabolism is not fully understood. Here, we report on an alternative TCA cycle uniquely aimed at generating ATP and oxalate, two metabolites critical for the survival of Pseudomonas fluorescens. The upregulation of isocitrate lyase (ICL) and acylating glyoxylate dehydrogenase (AGODH) led to the enhanced synthesis of oxalate, a dicarboxylic acid involved in the immobilization of aluminum (Al). The increased activity of succinyl-CoA synthetase (SCS) and oxalate CoA-transferase (OCT) in the Al-stressed cells afforded an effective route to ATP synthesis from oxalyl-CoA via substrate level phosphorylation. This modified TCA cycle with diminished efficacy in NADH production and decreased CO2-evolving capacity, orchestrates the synthesis of oxalate, NADPH, and ATP, ingredients pivotal to the survival of P. fluorescens in an Al environment. The channeling of succinyl-CoA towards ATP formation may be an important function of the TCA cycle during anaerobiosis, Fe starvation and O2-limited conditions
Individual differences and rating errors in first impressions of psychopathy
The current study is the first to investigate whether individual differences in personality are related to improved first impression accuracy when appraising psychopathy in female offenders from thin-slices of information. The study also investigated the types of errors laypeople make when forming these judgments. Sixty-seven undergraduates assessed 22 offenders on their level of psychopathy, violence, likability, and attractiveness. Psychopathy rating accuracy improved as rater extroversion-sociability and agreeableness increased and when neuroticism and lifestyle and antisocial characteristics decreased. These results suggest that traits associated with nonverbal rating accuracy or social functioning may be important in threat detection. Raters also made errors consistent with error management theory, suggesting that laypeople overappraise danger when rating psychopathy.N/
System Safety Engineering for Social and Ethical ML Risks: A Case Study
Governments, industry, and academia have undertaken efforts to identify and
mitigate harms in ML-driven systems, with a particular focus on social and
ethical risks of ML components in complex sociotechnical systems. However,
existing approaches are largely disjointed, ad-hoc and of unknown
effectiveness. Systems safety engineering is a well established discipline with
a track record of identifying and managing risks in many complex sociotechnical
domains. We adopt the natural hypothesis that tools from this domain could
serve to enhance risk analyses of ML in its context of use. To test this
hypothesis, we apply a "best of breed" systems safety analysis, Systems
Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA), to a specific high-consequence system with
an important ML-driven component, namely the Prescription Drug Monitoring
Programs (PDMPs) operated by many US States, several of which rely on an
ML-derived risk score. We focus in particular on how this analysis can extend
to identifying social and ethical risks and developing concrete design-level

Lower hybrid counter-current drive experiment in JET
12th International Congress on Plasma Physics, 25-29 October 2004, Nice (France)Lower hybrid current drive has been demonstrated to be an efficient tool to modify the current profile in order to access to high energy confinement regimes. Counter-current drive could be an alternative scenario provided the current drive efficiency is not too small when fast electrons flow in the opposite way to the DC electric field. By reversing the toroidal field (Bt=-3.1T) and the plasma current (Ip=-1.45MA), counter current drive with lower hybrid waves has been investigated for the first time in JET. The experiments were carried out at low plasma density ( =1.0 x1019m-3 , ne(0)=1.6 x 1019m-3) with 2.9MW of lower hybrid power. The CRONOS code[1], which couples the diffusion equations to a 2-D equilibrium code, has been used to estimate the RF driven current. Runs indicate that loop voltage and internal inductance are best simulated with a current drive efficiency of –1.0 x 1019 A.W-1.m-2 with a peaked central LH power deposition deduced from DELPHINE[2]. This efficiency is indeed very close to the one found for co-LHCD at similar plasma current and density. Current profile evolves from a hollow profile (with a minimum at r/a ~0) and a maximum at r/a~0.4-0.5) to a rather flat profile (up to r/a=0.3)
The History, Development, and Purpose of the Sensory Integration Global Network
The Sensory Integration Global Network (SIGN) is a Web-based resource developed by a loosely structured group of international volunteers dedicated to protecting the integrity and promoting the work of Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI). SIGN provides an international resource to educate the public and professionals about A. Jean Ayres and sensory integration theory and practice to help them to discriminate between ASI and other interventions, especially those that use similar descriptors of improving sensory integration and sensory processing.
This article aims to increase awareness of the existence of SIGN within the readership of the American Occupational Therapy Association\u27s (AOTA\u27 s) Sensory Integration Special Interest Section. The persons working with SIGN hope that by informing the public about the trademark and exposing both the public and professionals to the underlying principles incorporated within the trademarked ASI approach, consumers will be able to make educated choices about the types of interventions they access. Additionally, the network hopes to assist practitioners by clarifying the terminology used when describing sensory integration practice
