    Interdisciplinary investigation of naming practices of cafes signages in Jordan

    Various studies have extensively examined the linguistic aspects of signage, especially in the context of store signs. However, scholarly research on Jordanian café culture is limited. Therefore, conducting a comprehensive study of Jordan's café scene is relevant and promising in providing valuable sociocultural insights. This research explores the sociocultural values, norms, and practices associated with café signs in Jordan. Three hundred forty café signs from various neighbourhoods in Amman provided the linguistic data for this research. The findings revealed that English predominates in café signage due to its liveliness, strong connection to globalisation, and favourable client perceptions. The data also showed that trendy café names and English cultural references enhance visibility. These establishments use alliteration, blending, compounding, and connotation techniques to attract customers. This study highlights the significance of English-language signage in Jordan and its implications for linguistic landscape research. Thus, the research proves beneficial for linguistic landscape researchers seeking insights into sociocultural values, norms, and practices in Jordanian society

    Relationship Between Organisational Trust and Decision - Making Participation

    The purpose of this study is to evaluate the degree of trust among the Amman Education Directorates and how much educational supervisors participated in decision-making. The study sample is made up of 240 academic supervisors. The study’s findings showed that the Education Directorate appeared to have a moderate level of faith in organizational elements such management style, administrative policies, creative possibilities, and organizational values. Furthermore, the study revealed a significant relationship between organizational trust and the level of involvement in decision-making processes, with a significance level of (a≤0.5). However, no statistically significant variations in the sample members’ replies according to their gender, education, or experience were found. Based on these findings, the research recommends that educational directors give priority to strengthening supervisors’ organizational commitment to support educational policies that promote trust and provide them chances to apply their creative thinking to administrative tasks

    Sexual Harassment and Its Impact on Employees

    Sexual harassment remains a prevalent type of mistreatment of employees that frequently transpires within the confines of the workplace. The present study endeavors to address the lacuna in prior research and examine the effects of sexual harassment on employee depression, employee satisfaction, and turnover intention. The research employs a quantitative methodology utilizing structural equation modeling (SEM) to scrutinize the gathered data. The study's sample comprises 406 employees who have encountered incidents of sexual harassment in Indonesia. The SmartPLS 3 program was utilized to analyze questionnaires that were distributed to 406 employees via Google Forms. The results show that sexual harassment affects depression (p = 0.000), sexual harassment does not affect job satisfaction (p = 0.209), depression affects job satisfaction (p = 0.001), depression affects turnover intention (p = 0.000), and job satisfaction affects turnover intention (p = 0.001). The implication of this research is that organizations must take action to prevent sexual harassment in the work environment and reduce its negative effects by making sexual harassment prevention training and rules related to sexual harassment

    Impact of Layoff on Entrepreneurial Intentions and Willingness to Job Application

    Many companies are currently stopping and experiencing losses as a result of facing the pressure of the Covid-19 pandemic and also massive competition amidst technological improvements in all sectors. Companies that are not strong enough to face pressure finally use a strategy of massive layoffs to increase business efficiency. In this regard, it is necessary to know the impact of employee layoffs at the end of the Covid-19 pandemic on interest in working again and willingness to apply for jobs. This study is very important to provide implications for the government in providing policies and regulations to reduce unemployment and improve the country's economy. Therefore, a study was conducted by distributing questionnaires to 400 employees affected by layoffs from 10 regions in Indonesia. Analysis using the structural equation model shows that although layoffs have no effect on stress, stress does have an effect on entrepreneurial intentions and willingness to apply for jobs. However, layoffs affect entrepreneurial intentions and willingness to apply for jobs. This study makes an important contribution to the existing literature by empirically examining the relationship between layoffs, stress, entrepreneurial intentions and willingness to job application

    Mobile-Assisted Listening Instructions with Jordanian Audio Materials: A Pathway to EFL Proficiency

    This research examined the impact of mobile devices and Jordanian audio resources on the listening abilities of English as a foreign language (EFL) learners. The research included 100 EFL students from Jadara University in Jordan, with 50 students in the experimental group and 50 students in the control group. Quantitative research and ANOVA testing were used to analyze the data. Both groups were pre- and post-tested on listening comprehension, vocabulary, and proficiency. ANOVA was used to compare the mean scores between the experimental and control groups. The ANOVA test determined the impact of mobile devices and Jordanian audio on participants’ listening abilities. The test compared the mean scores of the experimental and control groups to determine whether the intervention significantly improved listening skills. The ANOVA test showed that mobile devices and Jordanian audio resources improved the listening abilities of EFL learners. The experimental group had a superior understanding of vocabulary and listening skills compared to the control group. These studies show that mobile devices and realistic audio content improve EFL listening training. ANOVA showed that this training strategy improved listening skills. This research contributes to the literature on EFL pedagogy literature and assists EFL teachers and curriculum designers in enhancing their listening skills. Future studies may examine other factors that could impact the effectiveness of mobile devices and audio resources in EFL listening training, including intervention duration and learner proficiency.     Impact of Toxic Leadership on Employee Performance

    This research intends to shed additional light on the effects of toxic leadership on employee satisfaction, motivation, and performance. Such a study on toxic leadership is required since, to date, no research in Indonesia have sought to quantify the consequences of toxic leadership on organizational leaders. Using surveys and structural equation modeling, a quantitative strategy was adopted (SEM). The research sample amounted to 400 taken from 8 locations in Indonesia. Using Google Forms, questionnaires were distributed to 400 employees and analyzed using the Lisrel 8.5 program. The results show that toxic leadership has an effect on job satisfaction (p > 0.00), toxic leadership has an effect on work motivation (p > 0.00), toxic leadership has no effect on employee performance (p 0.00), job satisfaction has effect on employee performance (p > 0.00) work motivation has no effect on employee performance (p < 0.00). The consequences of the study findings for organizations range from the process of screening and selection of leaders to creating stress management and self-resilience training to help employees deal with their emotions in healthy ways and strengthen their defenses

    Pea Protein Nanoemulsion Effectively Stabilizes Vitamin D in Food Products: A Potential Supplementation during the COVID-19 Pandemic

    Vitamin D deficiency is a global issue which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic-related lockdowns. Fortification of food staples with vitamin D provides a solution to alleviate this problem. This research explored the use of pea protein nanoemulsion (PPN) to improve the stability of vitamin D in various food products. PPN was created using a pH-shifting and ultrasonication combined method. The physicochemical properties were studied, including particle size, foaming ability, water holding capacity, antioxidant activity, and total phenolic contents. The fortification of several food formulations (non-fat cow milk, canned orange juice, orange juice powder, banana milk, and infant formula) with vitamin D–PPN was investigated and compared to raw untreated pea protein (UPP) regarding their color, viscosity, moisture content, chemical composition, vitamin D stability, antioxidant activity, and morphology. Finally, a sensory evaluation (quantitative descriptive analysis, and consumer testing) was conducted. The results show that PPN with a size of 21.8 nm protected the vitamin D in all tested products. PPN may serve as a potential carrier and stabilizer of vitamin D in food products with minimum effects on the taste and color. Hence, PPN may serve as a green and safe method for food fortification during the COVID-19 pandemic

    Impediments of Using E-Learning Platforms for Teaching English: A Case Study in Jordan

    E-learning platforms are essential tools used widely for teaching and learning English, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. They are also used to communicate and interact with students, assess progress, evaluate assignments, and provide feedback. However, teachers of English face potential barriers when they use such platforms. This study examines the use of e-learning platforms in teaching English as a foreign language in Jordan. The study employed a quantitative research method. The findings revealed that using e-learning platforms for educational purposes is beneficial regarding accessibility when attending courses. E-learning enabled the students to practise more and to be more engaged in the learning process, which improved their language skills. Effective e-learning platform strategies significantly broaden students' perceptions and increase the opportunity to exchange information with their classmates. Nonetheless, several impediments may hinder the application of e-learning platforms, including teacher-related, technical, and technological factors. The study recommends that teachers use interactive methods, including images, sounds, videos, and multimedia, to engage learners with various needs and abilities. The study also suggests building codified standards when designing e-learning to develop students' skills at all levels and training teachers on using modern technological strategies in e-learning

    Pancreatic surgery outcomes: multicentre prospective snapshot study in 67 countries

    Background: Pancreatic surgery remains associated with high morbidity rates. Although postoperative mortality appears to have improved with specialization, the outcomes reported in the literature reflect the activity of highly specialized centres. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes following pancreatic surgery worldwide.Methods: This was an international, prospective, multicentre, cross-sectional snapshot study of consecutive patients undergoing pancreatic operations worldwide in a 3-month interval in 2021. The primary outcome was postoperative mortality within 90 days of surgery. Multivariable logistic regression was used to explore relationships with Human Development Index (HDI) and other parameters.Results: A total of 4223 patients from 67 countries were analysed. A complication of any severity was detected in 68.7 percent of patients (2901 of 4223). Major complication rates (Clavien-Dindo grade at least IIIa) were 24, 18, and 27 percent, and mortality rates were 10, 5, and 5 per cent in low-to-middle-, high-, and very high-HDI countries respectively. The 90-day postoperative mortality rate was 5.4 per cent (229 of 4223) overall, but was significantly higher in the low-to-middle-HDI group (adjusted OR 2.88, 95 per cent c.i. 1.80 to 4.48). The overall failure-to-rescue rate was 21 percent; however, it was 41 per cent in low-to-middle-compared with 19 per cent in very high-HDI countries.Conclusion: Excess mortality in low-to-middle-HDI countries could be attributable to failure to rescue of patients from severe complications. The authors call for a collaborative response from international and regional associations of pancreatic surgeons to address management related to death from postoperative complications to tackle the global disparities in the outcomes of pancreatic surgery (NCT04652271; ISRCTN95140761)
