Maltreated and non-maltreated children's true and false memories of neutral and emotional word lists in the DRM task
Maltreated (n = 26) and non - maltreated (n = 31) 7 - to 12 - year - old children were tested on the Deese/Roediger - McDermot (DRM) false memory task using emotional and neutral word lists. True recall was significantly better for non - maltreated than maltreated children regardless of list valence. The proportion of false recall for neutral lists was comparable regardless of maltreatment status. However, maltreated children showed a significantly higher false recall rate for the emotional lists than non - maltreated children. Together, these results provide new evidence that maltreated children could be more prone to false memory illusions for negatively - valenced information than their non - maltreated counterparts
Evidences on overweight of regular blood donors in a center of Southern Italy
Objective: Smoking, unhealthy diet and obesity, sedentary behavior and inability to maintain adequate exercise have significant consequences for several chronic disorders. Blood centers can play a public health role in obesity surveillance and interventions. The purpose study was to evaluate the health status of the blood donors by monitoring the nutritional habits and lifestyle. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional face-to-face questionnaire was developed. It included a 41 item dietary assessment, reporting semi-quantitative food frequency, dietary behavior and questions on self-rated health status. Donors were regular repeat blood donors, eligible to donate. Results: Of the 2468 blood donors enrolled between July 2017 and January 2018, 1390 were repeat donors. Only 205 agreed to respond to the questionnaire. Data showed that donors followed mainly a Mediterranean diet and had more awareness to lifestyle, women more than men, in comparison with general population. The prevalence of overweight was found 50.7% in men and 16.9% in women. Conclusions: Overweight and obesity are common among regular blood donors and it is more frequent in men than women. The female blood donors seem to be characterized by better knowledge on the relationship between lifestyle and health, and by a better “putting into practice” of the information possessed
Long-term follow-up of disability pensioners having musculoskeletal disorders

Abstract

Background

Previously we have conducted a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate the effect of a brief cognitive behavioural program with a vocational approach aiming to return disability pensioners with back pain to work, as compared to no intervention. One year after the intervention, 10 participants (22%) who received the program and 5 (11%) in the control group reported to have entered a return to work process. The aims of this study were to evaluate long-term effects of the intervention, and compare this effect to 2 reference populations not participating in the original trial.

Methods

Three groups of disability pensioners were investigated: 1) Disability pensioners having back pain (n = 89) previously participating in the RCT (randomized to either a brief cognitive behavioural intervention or to a control group), 2) 342 disability pensioners having back pain, but refusing to participate in the study and 3) 449 disability pensioners having other musculoskeletal disorders than back pain. Primary outcome was return to work, defined as a reduction in payment of disability pension.

Results

Only 2 of 89 (2.3%) participants from the RCT had reduced disability pension at 3-years follow-up, both from the control group. None of the participants that had been in a process of returning to work after 1 year had actually gained employment at 3-years follow-up. In the 2 groups not participating in the previous RCT, only 4 (1.2%) and 8 (1.6%) had returned to work after 3 years respectively.

Conclusion

The number of pensioners who returned to work was negligible in all groups regardless of having participated in a cognitive behavioural intervention or not.</p
Microscopic Surface Structure of Liquid Alkali Metals
We report an x-ray scattering study of the microscopic structure of the
surface of a liquid alkali metal. The bulk liquid structure factor of the
eutectic K67Na33 alloy is characteristic of an ideal mixture, and so shares the
properties of an elemental liquid alkali metal. Analysis of off-specular
diffuse scattering and specular x-ray reflectivity shows that the surface
roughness of the K-Na alloy follows simple capillary wave behavior with a
surface structure factor indicative of surface induced layering. Comparison of
thelow-angle tail of the K67Na33 surface structure factor with the one measured
for liquid Ga and In previously suggests that layering is less pronounced in
alkali metals. Controlled exposure of the liquid to H2 and O2 gas does not
affect the surface structure, indicating that oxide and hydride are not stable
at the liquid surface under these experimental conditions.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, published in Phys. Rev.
Adherence to subcutaneous interferon beta-1a treatment using an electronic injection device:a prospective open-label Scandinavian noninterventional study (the ScanSmart study)
Background: Disease modifying drugs help control the course of relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS); however, good adherence is needed for long-term outcomes.
Objective: To evaluate patient adherence to treatment with subcutaneous interferon beta-1a using RebiSmart® and assess injection-site reactions and treatment satisfaction.
Methods: This prospective, single-arm, open-label, noninterventional multicenter Phase IV trial included disease modifying drug-experienced mobile patients with RRMS. Adherence was measured over 12 weeks. Items 13–23, 35, 37, and 38 of the Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Concerns Questionnaire (injection-site reactions and treatment satisfaction) were recorded at 12 weeks.
Results: Sixty patients were recruited (mean age 43.7 [±SD 7.9] years; 83% female; mean years since multiple sclerosis diagnosis 6.7 [SD 4.5]). Adherence data were obtained in 54 patients only due to technical problems with six devices. Over 12 weeks, 89% (n=48) of patients had ≥90% adherence to treatment. Most patients experienced mild influenza-like symptoms and injection-site reactions, and global side effects were minimal. Most patients (78%) rated the convenience as the most important aspect of the device, and most experienced no or mild pain.
Conclusion: RRMS patients treated with subcutaneous interferon beta-1a, administered with RebiSmart, demonstrated generally good adherence, and the treatment was generally well tolerated
Surface Structure of Liquid Metals and the Effect of Capillary Waves: X-ray Studies on Liquid Indium
We report x-ray reflectivity (XR) and small angle off-specular diffuse
scattering (DS) measurements from the surface of liquid Indium close to its
melting point of C. From the XR measurements we extract the surface
structure factor convolved with fluctuations in the height of the liquid
surface. We present a model to describe DS that takes into account the surface
structure factor, thermally excited capillary waves and the experimental
resolution. The experimentally determined DS follows this model with no
adjustable parameters, allowing the surface structure factor to be deconvolved
from the thermally excited height fluctuations. The resulting local electron
density profile displays exponentially decaying surface induced layering
similar to that previously reported for Ga and Hg. We compare the details of
the local electron density profiles of liquid In, which is a nearly free
electron metal, and liquid Ga, which is considerably more covalent and shows
directional bonding in the melt. The oscillatory density profiles have
comparable amplitudes in both metals, but surface layering decays over a length
scale of \AA for In and \AA for Ga. Upon controlled
exposure to oxygen, no oxide monolayer is formed on the liquid In surface,
unlike the passivating film formed on liquid Gallium.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev.
Intravital three-dimensional bioprinting
Fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) structures and functional tissues directly in live animals would enable minimally invasive surgical techniques for organ repair or reconstruction. Here, we show that 3D cell-laden photosensitive polymer hydrogels can be bioprinted across and within tissues of live mice, using bio-orthogonal two-photon cycloaddition and crosslinking of the polymers at wavelengths longer than 850 nm. Such intravital 3D bioprinting\u2014which does not create by-products and takes advantage of commonly available multiphoton microscopes for the accurate positioning and orientation of the bioprinted structures into specific anatomical sites\u2014enables the fabrication of complex structures inside tissues of live mice, including the dermis, skeletal muscle and brain. We also show that intravital 3D bioprinting of donor-muscle-derived stem cells under the epimysium of hindlimb muscle in mice leads to the de novo formation of myofibres in the mice. Intravital 3D bioprinting could serve as an in vivo alternative to conventional bioprinting
Simultaneous X-Ray and TeV Gamma-Ray Observations of the TeV Blazar Markarian 421 during February and May 2000
In this paper we present the results of simultaneous observations of the TeV
blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) at X-ray and TeV Gamma-ray energies with the
Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the stereoscopic Cherenkov Telescope
system of the HEGRA (High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy) experiment, respectively.
The source was monitored from February 2nd to February 16th and from May 3rd to
May 8th, 2000. We discuss in detail the temporal and spectral properties of the
source. Remarkably, the TeV observations of February 7th/8th showed
statistically significant evidence for substantial TeV flux variability on 30
min time scale. We show the results of modeling the data with a time dependent
homogeneous Synchrotron Self-Compton (SSC) model. The X-ray and TeV gamma-ray
emission strengths and energy spectra together with the rapid flux variability
strongly suggest that the emission volume is approaching the observer with a
Doppler factor of 50 or higher. The different flux variability time scales
observed at X-rays and TeV Gamma-rays indicate that a more detailed analysis
will require inhomogeneous models with several emission zones.Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJ, 21 Pages, 5 Figure
