Electronic structure and chemical bonding of nc-TiC/a-C nanocomposites
The electronic structure of nanocrystalline (nc-) TiC/amorphous C
nanocomposites has been investigated by soft x-ray absorption and emission
spectroscopy. The measured spectra at the Ti 2p and C 1s thresholds of the
nanocomposites are compared to those of Ti metal and amorphous C. The
corresponding intensities of the electronic states for the valence and
conduction bands in the nanocomposites are shown to strongly depend on the TiC
carbide grain size. An increased charge-transfer between the Ti 3d-eg states
and the C 2p states has been identified as the grain size decreases, causing an
increased ionicity of the TiC nanocrystallites. It is suggested that the
charge-transfer occurs at the interface between the nanocrystalline TiC and the
amorphous C matrix and represents an interface bonding which may be essential
for the understanding of the properties of nc-TiC/amorphous C and similar

Electronic structure investigation of the cubic inverse perovskite Sc3AlN
The electronic structure and chemical bonding of the recently discovered
inverse perovskite Sc3AlN, in comparison to ScN and Sc metal have been
investigated by bulk-sensitive soft x-ray emission spectroscopy. The measured
Sc L, N K, Al L1, and Al L2,3 emission spectra are compared with calculated
spectra using first principle density-functional theory including dipole
transition matrix elements. The main Sc 3d - N 2p and Sc 3d - Al 3p chemical
bond regions are identified at -4 eV and -1.4 eV below the Fermi level,
respectively. A strongly modified spectral shape of 3s states in the Al L2,3
emission from Sc3AlN in comparison to pure Al metal is found, which reflects
the Sc 3d - Al 3p hybridization observed in the Al L1 emission. The differences
between the electronic structure of Sc3AlN, ScN, and Sc metal are discussed in
relation to the change of the conductivity and elastic properties.Comment: 11 pages, 5 picture
Bonding mechanism in the nitrides Ti2AlN and TiN: an experimental and theoretical investigation
The electronic structure of nanolaminate Ti2AlN and TiN thin films has been
investigated by bulk-sensitive soft x-ray emission spectroscopy. The measured
Ti L, N K, Al L1 and Al L2,3 emission spectra are compared with calculated
spectra using ab initio density-functional theory including dipole transition
matrix elements. Three different types of bond regions are identified; a
relatively weak Ti 3d - Al 3p bonding between -1 and -2 eV below the Fermi
level, and Ti 3d - N 2p and Ti 3d - N 2s bonding which are deeper in energy
observed at -4.8 eV and -15 eV below the Fermi level, respectively. A strongly
modified spectral shape of 3s states of Al L2,3 emission from Ti2AlN in
comparison to pure Al metal is found, which reflects the Ti 3d - Al 3p
hybridization observed in the Al L1 emission. The differences between the
electronic and crystal structures of Ti2AlN and TiN are discussed in relation
to the intercalated Al layers of the former compound and the change of the

Children\u27s Judgments of Age
Age judgments of human figures by children, ranging in age from 3 through 9 years, were investigated. The stimuli consisted of 4 different male figures drawn according to typical physical characteristics of the middle-aged adult, adolescent child, and infant. The figures were reproduced in 2 sizes and were matched in all possible pairings. Ss\u27 accuracy in age judgments increased steadily over the 7 age levels. The errors of young Ss were primarily due to a figural-size response set. Older Ss made increasing use of other physical features in making their judgments. Implications of these findings were discussed with references to the theoretical framework of Piaget
Mitochondrial Hydrogen Peroxide and Defective Cholesterol Efflux Prevent In Vitro Fertilization by Cryopreserved Inbred Mouse Sperm1
Recent advances in the cryopreservation of mouse sperm have resulted in dramatically improved in vitro fertilization (IVF) rates, but the biological mechanisms underlying the techniques remain unclear. Two different classes of compounds have been widely utilized to improve the IVF rates of cryopreserved mouse sperm: antioxidants and cyclodextrins. To determine how cryopreservation reduces mouse sperm IVF and how antioxidants and cyclodextrins mitigate this effect, we examined sperm function and oxidative damage after cryopreservation, with and without treatments, in mouse strains important for biomedical research. Our investigation revealed mouse strain-specific effects on IVF by modulation of oxidative stress and cholesterol efflux of cryopreserved sperm. Antioxidants improved IVF rates of C57Bl6/J cryopreserved mouse sperm by reducing hydrogen peroxide produced by sperm mitochondria and ameliorating peroxidative damage to the sperm acrosome. Enhancing cholesterol efflux with cyclodextrin restored capacitation-dependent sperm function and IVF after cryopreservation of C57Bl/6J, C57Bl/6N, and 129X1 mouse sperm. Our results highlight two accessible pathways for continued development of IVF techniques for mouse sperm and provide novel endpoints prognostic of IVF success. These insights may improve sperm cryopreservation methods of other mouse strains and species
Resonant Auger spectroscopy at the L2,3 shake-up thresholds as a probe of electron correlation effects in nickel
The excitation energy dependence of the three-hole satellites in the
L3-M4,5M4,5 and L2-M4,5M4,5 Auger spectra of nickel metal has been measured
using synchrotron radiation. The satellite behavior in the non-radiative
emission spectra at the L3 and L2 thresholds is compared and the influence of
the Coster-Kronig channel explored. The three-hole satellite intensity at the
L3 Auger emission line reveals a peak structure at 5 eV above the L3 threshold
attributed to resonant processes at the 2p53d9 shake-up threshold. This is

The Prevalence and Clinical Implications of Comorbid Back Pain in Shoulder Instability: A Multicenter Orthopaedic Outcomes Network (MOON) Shoulder Instability Cohort Study.
Background:Understanding predictors of pain is critical, as recent literature shows that comorbid back pain is an independent risk factor for worse functional and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) as well as increased opioid dependence after total joint arthroplasty. Purpose/Hypothesis:The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether comorbid back pain would be predictive of pain or self-reported instability symptoms at the time of stabilization surgery. We hypothesized that comorbid back pain will correlate with increased pain at the time of surgery as well as with worse scores on shoulder-related PRO measures. Study Design:Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods:As part of the Multicenter Orthopaedic Outcomes Network (MOON) Shoulder Instability cohort, patients consented to participate in pre- and intraoperative data collection. Demographic characteristics, injury history, preoperative PRO scores, and radiologic and intraoperative findings were recorded for patients undergoing surgical shoulder stabilization. Patients were also asked, whether they had any back pain. Results:The study cohort consisted of 1001 patients (81% male; mean age, 24.1 years). Patients with comorbid back pain (158 patients; 15.8%) were significantly older (28.1 vs 23.4 years; P < .001) and were more likely to be female (25.3% vs 17.4%; P = .02) but did not differ in terms of either preoperative imaging or intraoperative findings. Patients with self-reported back pain had significantly worse preoperative pain and shoulder-related PRO scores (American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons score, Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index) (P < .001), more frequent depression (22.2% vs 8.3%; P < .001), poorer mental health status (worse scores for the RAND 36-Item Health Survey Mental Component Score, Iowa Quick Screen, and Personality Assessment Screener) (P < .01), and worse preoperative expectations (P < .01). Conclusion:Despite having similar physical findings, patients with comorbid back pain had more severe preoperative pain and self-reported symptoms of instability as well as more frequent depression and lower mental health scores. The combination of disproportionate shoulder pain, comorbid back pain and mental health conditions, and inferior preoperative expectations may affect not only the patient's preoperative state but also postoperative pain control and/or postoperative outcomes
