Photoproduction of Mesons off Light Nuclei -- the Search for \eta -Mesic Nuclei
Photoproduction of \eta mesons off light nuclei (d, 3He, 7Li) has been
measured at the tagged photon beam of the Mainz MAMI accelerator with the
combined Crystal Ball/TAPS detection system. Special attention was given to the
threshold behavior of the reactions in view of possible indications for the
formation of (quasi-) bound \eta -nucleus states, so-called \eta -mesic nuclei.
A very strong threshold enhancement of coherent \eta photoproduction off 3He
was found and coherent \eta photoproduction off 7Li was observed for the first

Performance of a Large-Area GEM Detector Prototype for the Upgrade of the CMS Muon Endcap System
Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) technology is being considered for the forward
muon upgrade of the CMS experiment in Phase 2 of the CERN LHC. Its first
implementation is planned for the GE1/1 system in the region of the muon endcap mainly to control muon level-1 trigger rates
after the second long LHC shutdown. A GE1/1 triple-GEM detector is read out by
3,072 radial strips with 455 rad pitch arranged in eight -sectors.
We assembled a full-size GE1/1 prototype of 1m length at Florida Tech and
tested it in 20-120 GeV hadron beams at Fermilab using Ar/CO 70:30 and
the RD51 scalable readout system. Four small GEM detectors with 2-D readout and
an average measured azimuthal resolution of 36 rad provided precise
reference tracks. Construction of this largest GEM detector built to-date is
described. Strip cluster parameters, detection efficiency, and spatial
resolution are studied with position and high voltage scans. The plateau
detection efficiency is [97.1 0.2 (stat)]\%. The azimuthal resolution is
found to be [123.5 1.6 (stat)] rad when operating in the center of
the efficiency plateau and using full pulse height information. The resolution
can be slightly improved by 10 rad when correcting for the bias due
to discrete readout strips. The CMS upgrade design calls for readout
electronics with binary hit output. When strip clusters are formed
correspondingly without charge-weighting and with fixed hit thresholds, a
position resolution of [136.8 2.5 stat] rad is measured, consistent
with the expected resolution of strip-pitch/ = 131.3 rad. Other

Quality control and beam test of GEM detectors for future upgrades of the CMS muon high rate region at the LHC
Gas Electron Multipliers (GEM) are a proven position sensitive gas detector technology which nowadays is becoming more widely used in High Energy Physics. GEMs offer an excellent spatial resolution and a high particle rate capability, with a close to 100% detection efficiency. In view of the high luminosity phase of the CERN Large Hadron Collider, these aforementioned features make GEMs suitable candidates for the future upgrades of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector. In particular, the CMS GEM Collaboration proposes to cover the high-eta region of the muon system with large-area triple-GEM detectors, which have the ability to provide robust and redundant tracking and triggering functions. In this contribution, after a general introduction and overview of the project, the construction of full-size trapezoidal triple-GEM prototypes will be described in more detail. The procedures for the quality control of the GEM foils, including gain uniformity measurements with an x-ray source will be presented. In the past few years, several CMS triple-GEM prototype detectors were operated with test beams at the CERN SPS. The results of these test beam campaigns will be summarised
Photoproduction of pi0-mesons off neutrons in the nucleon resonance region
Precise angular distributions have been measured for the first time for the
photoproduction of -mesons off neutrons bound in the deuteron. The
effects from nuclear Fermi motion have been eliminated by a complete kinematic
reconstruction of the final state. The influence of final-state-interaction
effects has been estimated by a comparison of the reaction cross section for
quasi-free protons bound in the deuteron to the results for free protons and
then applied as a correction to the quasi-free neutron data. The experiment was
performed at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz Microtron MAMI with the
Crystal Ball and TAPS detector setup for incident photon energies between
~GeV and ~GeV. The results are compared to the predictions from
reaction models and partial-wave analyses based on data from other isospin
channels. The model predictions show large discrepancies among each other and
the present data will provide much tighter constraints. This is demonstrated by
the results of a new analysis in the framework of the Bonn-Gatchina
coupled-channel analysis which included the present data.Comment: accepted for publication in Phys; Rev. Let
Quasifree photoproduction of mesons off protons and neutrons
Differential and total cross sections for the quasifree reactions and have been determined at the
MAMI-C electron accelerator using a liquid deuterium target. Photons were
produced via bremsstrahlung from the 1.5 GeV incident electron beam and
energy-tagged with the Glasgow photon tagger. Decay photons of the neutral
decay modes and and coincident recoil nucleons were detected in a combined setup of
the Crystal Ball and the TAPS calorimeters. The -production cross
sections were measured in coincidence with recoil protons, recoil neutrons, and
in an inclusive mode without a condition on recoil nucleons, which allowed a
check of the internal consistency of the data. The effects from nuclear Fermi
motion were removed by a kinematic reconstruction of the final-state invariant
mass and possible nuclear effects on the quasifree cross section were
investigated by a comparison of free and quasifree proton data. The results,
which represent a significant improvement in statistical quality compared to
previous measurements, agree with the known neutron-to-proton cross-section
ratio in the peak of the resonance and confirm a peak in the
neutron cross section, which is absent for the proton, at a center-of-mass
energy MeV with an intrinsic width of MeV
Photoproduction of π0-pairs off protons and off neutrons
Total cross sections, angular distributions, and invariant-mass distributions have been measured for the photoproduction of π0π0 pairs off free protons and off nucleons bound in the deuteron. The experiments were performed at the MAMI accelerator facility in Mainz using the Glasgow photon tagging spectrometer and the Crystal Ball/TAPS detector. The accelerator delivered electron beams of 1508 and 1557MeV, which produced bremsstrahlung in thin radiator foils. The tagged photon beam covered energies up to 1400MeV. The data from the free proton target are in good agreement with previous measurements and were only used to test the analysis procedures. The results for differential cross sections (angular distributions and invariant-mass distributions) for free and quasi-free protons are almost identical in shape, but differ in absolute magnitude up to 15%. Thus, moderate final-state interaction effects are present. The data for quasi-free neutrons are similar to the proton data in the second resonance region (final-state invariant masses up to ≈1550 MeV), where both reactions are dominated by the N(1520)3/2−→Δ(1232)3/2+π decay. At higher energies, angular and invariant-mass distributions are different. A simple analysis of the shapes of the invariant-mass distributions in the third resonance region is consistent with strong contributions of an N⋆→Nσ decay for the proton, while the reaction is dominated by a sequential decay via a Δπ intermediate state for the neutron. The data are compared to predictions from the Two-Pion-MAID model and the Bonn-Gatchina coupled-channel analysis

Photoproduction of ηπ pairs off nucleons and deuterons
Quasi-free photoproduction of πηπη -pairs has been investigated from threshold up to incident photon energies of 1.4 GeV, respectively up to photon-nucleon invariant masses up to 1.9 GeV. Total cross sections, angular distributions, invariant-mass distributions of the πηπη and meson-nucleon pairs, and beam-helicity asymmetries have been measured for the reactions γp→pπ0ηγp→pπ0η , γn→nπ0ηγn→nπ0η , γp→nπ+ηγp→nπ+η , and γn→pπ−ηγn→pπ−η from nucleons bound inside the deuteron. For the γpγp initial-state data for free protons have also been analyzed. Finally, the total cross sections for quasi-free production of π0ηπ0η pairs from nucleons bound in 3 He nuclei have been investigated in view of final state interaction (FSI) effects. The experiments were performed at the tagged photon beam facility of the Mainz MAMI accelerator using an almost 4 ππ covering electromagnetic calorimeter composed of the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. The shapes of all differential cross section data and the asymmetries are very similar for protons and neutrons and agree with the conjecture that the reactions are dominated by the sequential Δ⋆3/2−→ηΔ(1232)→πηNΔ⋆3/2−→ηΔ(1232)→πηN decay chain, mainly with Δ(1700)3/2−Δ(1700)3/2− and Δ(1940)3/2−Δ(1940)3/2− . The ratios of the magnitude of the total cross sections also agree with this assumption. However, the absolute magnitudes of the cross sections are reduced by FSI effects with respect to fre
First measurement of the helicity asymmetry for in the resonance region
The first measurement of the helicity dependence of the photoproduction cross
section of single neutral pions off protons is reported for photon energies
from 600 to 2300\,MeV, covering nearly the full solid angle. The data are
compared to predictions from the SAID, MAID, and BnGa partial wave analyses.
Strikingly large differences between data and predictions are observed which
are traced to differences in the helicity amplitudes of well known and
established resonances. Precise values for the helicity amplitudes of several
resonances are reported
Quasi-free photoproduction of η -mesons off the deuteron
Abstract.: Precise data for quasi-free photoproduction of η-mesons off the deuteron have been measured at the Bonn ELSA accelerator with the combined Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector for incident photon energies up to 2.5GeV. The η-mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and neutrons. Possible nuclear effects like Fermi motion and re-scattering can be studied via a comparison of the quasi-free reaction off the bound proton to η-production off the free proton. No significant effects beyond the folding of the free cross-section with the momentum distribution of the bound protons have been found. These Fermi motion effects can be removed by an analysis using the invariant mass of the η-nucleon pairs reconstructed from the final-state four-momenta of the particles. The total cross-section for quasi-free η-photoproduction off the neutron reveals even without correction for Fermi motion a pronounced bump-like structure around 1GeV of incident photon energy, which is not observed for the proton. This structure is even narrower in the invariant-mass spectrum of the η-neutron pairs. Position and width of the peak in the invariant-mass spectrum are W ≈ 1665 MeV and FWHM Γ ≈ 25 MeV.
