Mechanical Manipulation of Facial Expressions as Means of Inducement, Suppression, and Feedback of Emotional States

This paper hypothesizes that tape placed strategically upon the face will provide feedback to the users emotional state by giving feedback to muscle tension. It is also hypothesized that females will greater utilize the feedback than males. Participants in the experiment were 30 college students (18 males and 12 females). Participants were randomly selected to either the experimental or control group. The experimental group had a Band-Aid placed at the outer eyebrow toward the upper ear, while the control group had a Band-Aid placed at a neural location on the upper forehead. Although there was no statistical significance between groups or between males and females, the experiment was preliminal and further experimentation might prove fruitful

Combined Electroweak Analysis

Recent developments in the measurement of precision electroweak measurements are summarised, notably new results on the mass of the top quark and mass and width of the W boson. Predictions of the Standard Model are compared to the experimental results which are used to constrain the input parameters of the Standard Model, in particular the mass of the Higgs boson. The agreement between measurements and expectations from theory is discussed. Nachweis von saurem glialen Faserprotein (GFAP) in humanem Serum und erste klinische Ergebnisse

Seit Jahrzehnten wird versucht, spezifische Proteine oder Peptide zu bestimmen, deren Konzentrationsänderungen im Liquor und oder im Blut eine diagnostische Aussage über den Zustand des ZNS bzw. über das quantitative Ausmaß des Schadens im Gehirn und Rückenmark zulassen. Der Wert eines biochemischen Markers insbesondere bei akuten Ereignissen, ähnlich wie die Herzenzymdiagnostik in der Kardiologie, erscheint hoch. GFAP wurde 1971 von Eng erstmalig aus Multiple Sklerose Plaques isoliert. GFAP ist ein 50 ± 1 kDa großes Protein, welches in einer wasserlöslichen und wasserunlöslichen Form existiert. GFAP gehört zu der Gruppe der Intermediärfilament-Proteine, die am Aufbau des Zytoskeletts beteiligt sind. GFAP konnte bisher nur in Gliazellen und Zellen glialen Ursprungs gefunden werden. Fast jede Reaktion von Astrozyten geht mit einer morphologisch sichtbaren Veränderung einher. Die Zellform verändert sich von einer runden protoplasmatischen Zelle mit wenigen Zellfortsätzen in eine verzweigte Zelle mit zahlreichen Zellfortsätzen. Diese Vorgänge sind immer mit einer Vermehrung zytoplasmatischer Filamente und einer Veränderung des GFAP Gehaltes verknüpft. Deshalb ist GFAP ein wichtiger Funktionsmarker. Bisher konnte GFAP in wäßrigen Gewebsextrakten mittels Immundiffusion und Elektrophorese, Immunradiometrie, Immunelektrophorese und Radioimmunoassays nachgewiesen werden. Die hauptsächlich angewendeten Nachweise beruhen auf immunhistochemischen Verfahren. Es gelang auch GFAP im Liquor mittels Radioimmunoassay und Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay nachzuweisen und bei Erkrankungen, die mit einer Gliose einhergehen, erhöhte GFAP-Konzentrationen nachzuweisen. Der in dieser Arbeit vorgestellte Nachweis von GFAP in humanem Serum basiert auf der Messung von GFAP in humanem Blut mit Hilfe eines zerfallsunterstützten Lanthanide Immunfluoresenzassays (Dissociation Enhanced Lanthanide Fluorescence Immunoassay = DELFIA). Die Messung beruht auf der Bindung von in Standardlösungen und Proben enthaltenem GFAP an Festphasen-Anti-GFAP. Anschließend wird das gebundene GFAP in mehreren Schritten mittels eines anti-GFAP Antikörpers und Europium detektiert. Die Fluoreszenz des gebundenen Europiums wird nach Anregung durch einen Lichtimpuls gemessen und so die in der Probe enthaltene Menge GFAP quantifiziert, die der Menge des gebundenen GFAP proportional ist. In dieser Arbeit konnte erstmalig GFAP zuverlässig, empfindlich und quantitativ bestimmt werden. Damit wird es erstmalig möglich ein für das Zentralnervensystem spezifisches Protein im Blut zu messen. Uns gelang es mit einem Kollektiv von Schädel-Hirn-Trauma Patienten eine Korrelation zwischen klinisch gesicherten Affektionen des Zentralnervensystems und dem Ansteigen des GFAP-Spiegels im Blut nachzuweisen

Behandlung der kindlichen proximalen Humerusfrakturen

Zusammenfassung: Frakturen des proximalen Humerus im Kindesalter können wegen des hohen Spontankorrekturpotenzials für Fehlstellungen in der Nähe der proximalen Humeruswachstumsfuge in der überwiegenden Mehrzahl der Fälle mit sehr gutem funktionellem Ergebnis konservativ behandelt werden. Ziel dieser Übersicht ist es, die Indikationen und Techniken für die operative Behandlung dieser Verletzungen im Wachstumsalter darzustellen. Indikationen zur primären Reposition und ggf. Stabilisation stellen kosmetisch störende Valgusfehlstellungen bei Kindern und dislozierte proximale Epiphysenlösungen und proximale Humerusfrakturen von vor dem Wachstumsabschluss stehenden Jugendlichen dar, da hier das Remodellingpotenzial fehlt. Während die geschlossene Reposition und perkutane Kirschner-Draht-Fixation von dislozierten proximalen Humerusfrakturen und Epiphysenlösungen sich durch die Möglichkeit die Drahtenden über die Hautoberfläche vorstehen zu lassen und dann ambulant zu entfernen, sowie die meist geringere Durchleuchtungszeit auszeichnet, fehlt dieser Methode die Übungsstabilität im Vergleich zur elastisch stabilen intramedullären Schienung ("elastic stable intramedullary nailing",  ESIN). Die ESIN zeichnet sich dagegen durch Übungsstabilität aus, jedoch um den Preis eines 2.Eingriffes in Narkose für die Metallentfernung. Die für die ESIN notwendige exakte Vorreposition für die korrekte Einbringung der Markschienen erfordert meist eine längere Durchleuchtungszeit im Vergleich zur Stabilisation mit perkutan eingebrachten Kirschner-Drähten. Die Interposition von Weichteilen wie Periost oder selten der Sehne des langen Bizepskopfs vorne im Frakturspalt bedingt einen erheblichen Anteil offener Repositionen (bis 50%) bei operativer Frakturstabilisatio

BOLLOCKS!! Designing pervasive games that play with the social rules of built environments

We propose that pervasive games designed with mechanics that are specifically in opposition with, or disruptive of, social rules of the environment in which they are played, have unique potential to provide interesting, provocative experiences for players. We explore this concept through the design and evaluation of an experimental game prototype, Shhh!, inspired by the juvenile game Bollocks, and implemented on Android mobile devices, which challenges players to make loud noises in libraries. Six participants played the game before engaging in semi-structured interviews, explored through inductive thematic analysis. Results suggest that the game provoked in players a heightened awareness of social rules, as well as a complex social dilemma of whether or not to act. We conclude by presenting a model for designing games that play with the social, as well as physical, rules of the environments in which they are set

Plains Minimalism

Plains Minimalism is a set of four musical scores that seeks to reconcile classical and folk music styles in a semi-improvisatory style. In each piece, the musicians are asked to interact with each other in different ways, alternating between a specifically-notated classical score and esoteric text descriptions. Additionally, this body of work includes instruments traditionally associated with American folk music, including banjo, manolin, and acoustic guitar. Through both the textural and notational fusion, these pieces are designed to be performed by musicians with variable degrees of reading ability, thus widening access to traditional classical music spaces

An intuitive tangible game controller

This paper outlines the development of a sensory feedback device providing a low cost, versatile and intuitive interface for controlling digital environments, in this example a flight simulator. Gesture based input allows for a more immersive experience, so rather than making the user feel like they are controlling an aircraft the intuitive interface allows the user to become the aircraft that is controlled by the movements of the user's hand. The movements are designed to feel intuitive and allow for a sense of immersion that would be difficult to achieve with an alternative interface. In this example the user's hand can become the aircraft much the same way that a child would imagine it

Paralabral cysts in the hip joint: findings at MR arthrography

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to retrospectively characterize paralabral cysts of the hip as seen at MR arthrography. Materials and methods: After Institutional Review Board approval, 704 patients who had MR arthrography were identified over a 3-year period and 40 patients were identified as having a cyst or fluid collection at the hip by MR report. MR images from these 40 patients were retrospectively reviewed by three radiologists where 18 were found to have a paralabral cyst, which were characterized as follows: location, configuration, contrast filling, size of the cyst, extent, direction, and whether associated osseous changes were present. In addition, the acetabular labrum was assessed for tears and, if present, the location and pattern were characterized. Results: Paralabral cysts were located anterosuperiorly in 56%, anteriorly in 22%, posterosuperiorly in 17%, and anteroinferiorly in 6% of cases. The vast majority (94%) were multilocular and filled with intra-articular contrast medium. The average dimensions were 8 × 7 × 11mm. The paralabral cyst demonstrated extracapsular extension in 72% of cases, with 39% located between the ilium and gluteus minimus, and 22% between the ilium and iliopsoas. Remodeling of the ilium adjacent to the cyst was observed in 50% of these cases. A labral tear was at the base of the labrum adjacent to the cyst in 78% of cases, while the tear was isolated to the body of the labrum in 22%. Tears were most commonly anterosuperior (55%) or anterior (28%) in location. Conclusion: Our results show that paralabral cysts of the hip are most commonly located anterosuperiorly, are multilocular, fill with intra-articular contrast medium, have average dimensions up to 11mm, and often extend extracapsularly between muscle and bone where they may remodel the adjacent iliu
