Mortality and Longevity Projections for the Oldest-Old in Portugal
The mortality decline observed in developed countries over the last decades significantly
increased the number of those surviving up to older ages. Mortality improvements are
naturally viewed as a positive change for individuals and as a substantial social achievement
for societies, but create new challenges in a number of different areas, ranging from the
planning of all components of social security systems to labour markets. Understanding
mortality and survival patterns at older ages is crucial. In this paper, we compare the results
provided by a number of different methods designed to project mortality for the oldest-old in
the Portuguese population. We identify the merits and limitations of each method and the
consequences of their use in constructing complete life tables
Complete convergence and records for dynamically generated stochastic processes
We consider empirical multi-dimensional Rare Events Point Processes that keep
track both of the time occurrence of extremal observations and of their
severity, for stochastic processes arising from a dynamical system, by
evaluating a given potential along its orbits. This is done both in the absence
and presence of clustering. A new formula for the piling of points on the
vertical direction of bi-dimensional limiting point processes, in the presence
of clustering, is given, which is then generalised for higher dimensions. The
limiting multi-dimensional processes are computed for systems with sufficiently
fast decay of correlations. The complete convergence results are used to study
the effect of clustering on the convergence of extremal processes, record time
and record values point processes. An example where the clustering prevents the
convergence of the record times point process is given
STOXX Europe 600 index: Corporate debt maturity analysis
This dissertation consists of an empirical study about corporate debt maturity structure in STOXX EUROPE 600’ firms. The observation period dates from year 2000 to 2013. Balance sheet yearly observations were used to build firm specific variables (determinants) to use in the model. Through different techniques of regression analysis we assess the changes in the relevance of the determinants in explaining debt maturity by model and throughout the sample period with particular focus to the periods before and after the 2008 subprime crisis. A complementary study on Euro Area yield curve AAA volatility also provides plausible evidence to support main conclusions. The results suggest an optimized structure trend of debt into firm’s balance sheet. A flat amount of debt remains since 2008 but, short-term debt has been replaced by long-term debt, thereby causing an increase of the debt maturity ratio. The specific purpose analysis to Euro Area Yield curve AAA revealed that shorter time interest rates had their volatility in highest levels after the subprime crisis, making riskier for firms to finance themselves using short-term strategies, suggesting this fact to be one plausible cause for the preference for long-term debt. Liquidity determinant dramatically lost his significance after the subprime crisis, while Growth Options determinant increased his. The results also suggested that debt maturity decision is not driven only by firm specific factors, i.e. macro-economic factors also contribute to impact debt maturity, but in a more significant way after the 2008 subprime crisis than before.
empresas do índice STOXX EUROPE 600.
a usar no modelo.
do subprime.
Improvement in the management of processes for the acquisition and standardization of pharmaceutical ingredients in a school laboratory
The pharmaceutical industry is a dynamic sector in terms of innovation and management. The sector generates around US$ 1.5 trillion a year. In this sense, continuous improvement actions in the management of its processes are constantly present. However, the training of its professionals permeates strict knowledge in the field of quality, pharmaceutical legislation, and public health since education generates knowledge and provides innovation. Therefore, studying quality management, processes and innovation for the education sector and industry are fundamental for companies and organizations in the health area in the 21st century to improve the management of the acquisition of inputs. The results point to gains for the implementation of the Guideline for Standardization and Acquisition of pharmaceutical ingredients in their respective processes.publishersversionpublishe
Augmented reality over maps
Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Engenharia InformáticaMaps and Geographic Information System (GIS) play a major role in modern society,
particularly on tourism, navigation and personal guidance. However, providing geographical
information of interest related to individual queries remains a strenuous task. The main
constraints are (1) the several information scales available, (2) the large amount of information
available on each scale, and (3) difficulty in directly infer a meaningful geographical context
from text, pictures, or diagrams that are used by most user-aiding systems. To that extent,
and to overcome the aforementioned difficulties, we develop a solution which allows the
overlap of visual information over the maps being queried — a method commonly referred
to as Augmented Reality (AR).
With that in mind, the object of this dissertation is the research and implementation of a
method for the delivery of visual cartographic information over physical (analogue) and
digital two-dimensional (2D) maps utilizing AR. We review existing state-of-art solutions and
outline their limitations across different use cases. Afterwards, we provide a generic modular
solution for a multitude of real-life applications, to name a few: museums, fairs, expositions,
and public street maps. During the development phase, we take into consideration the
trade-off between speed and accuracy in order to develop an accurate and real-time solution.
Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility of our methods with an application on a real use case
based on a map of the city of Oporto, in Portugal.
sociedade, particularmente no turismo, navegação e orientação pessoal. No entanto, fornecer

Design of a Single Expansion Ramp Nozzle and Numerical Investigation of Operation at OverExpanded Conditions
In the present thesis, a single expansion ramp nozzle (SERN) is designed and investigated.
A Python algorithm based on the method of characteristics (MOC) is developed, which generates the optimised contour of a 2D supersonic calorically perfect minimum length nozzle (MLN), for ideal shockfree flow expansion, and calculates various flowfield properties
within the nozzle. The algorithm results shows good agreement with theoretical background,
previous literature and CFD simulations, thus validating the code. An optimised SERN geometry is then designed using the algorithm, operating with an exit Mach number of ME = 4
and a specific heat ratio of ? = 1.4. The optimal geometry is truncated at 40% of its length for
viable integration into a vehicle, without significant loss in thrust. A numerical framework
is created in ANSYS FLUENT 16.2, and validated by comparison with data from previous
experimental investigations conducted on SERN’s. The validated model is then applied to
the SERN designed in this study, where various simulations of design and offdesign conditions are conducted. The numerical simulations are solved in a steadystate 2D environment, using the densitybased solver and the k - e RNG turbulence model. Case A simulates
SERN operation at design altitude (22 km) and speed (Mach 4), through nozzle pressure
ratios (NPR’s) 133.65 (design), 100, 75, 50 and 25. Near perfect expansion of the gases is
achieved at the design NPR. As the NPR is reduced, the flow becomes overexpanded, with
the formation of incident shockwaves at the nozzle exit and reflected shockwaves further
downstream, reduction of exhaust flow speed and contraction of the exhaust plume. From
NPR = 133.65 to NPR = 25, the SERN’s thrust, lift and moments suffer a linear reduction
of 81.33%, 80.7% and 81.17%, respectively. Case B simulates SERN operation at offdesign
speed (Mach 0.4) and altitude (8 km), through NPR’s 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15 and 20. Severe
overexpanded flow and complex shockwave patterns are observed, such as the restricted
shock separation (RSS) pattern, including separation and reattachment of the main jet to the
ramp, formation of a separation bubble on the ramp, a large recirculation region on the flap,
Mach disks, ? shock structures and shocktrains. From NPR = 4 to NPR = 20, the SERN’s
thrust, lift and moments varied to some degree, with an overall increase of 38.2%, 5.27% and
42.3% respectively.
várias propriedades do escoamento no interior do bocal.
38,2%, 5,27% e 42,3%, respetivamente
A narrative review of current striae treatments
Striae (striae cutis distensae) are a common disfiguring skin condition, characterised by the appearance of linear bands on the skin, with an atrophic look. The striae development is still unknown, being more common in women than in men. The prevalence of this condition ranges from 50% to 90%. Regarding treatment, there are various treatment strategies currently available for stretch marks, including topical preparations such as tretinoin and glycolic acid, and also laser. The goal of this work is to discover the main treatments available for striae management. For that, a search was performed based on the definition of specific scientific keywords, by exploring PubMed, ScienceDirect and Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS). MeSH thesaurus (Medical Subject Headings) descriptors were used. The results indicate that, to date, no treatment is fully effective. More clinical trials are needed to validate the efficacy of these therapies and their long-term use in this type of skin lesion.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Applying an adaptation of the Prado Project Management Maturity Model in an academic context
Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Engenharia e Gestão de Sistemas de InformaçãoThe organization’s strategy of a company is determinant in its performance. Failing strategies compromise the achievement of its goals. Thus, the interest in the field of project management has been increasing and has generated several tools used by companies.
The need to develop methodologies to evaluate the performance of projects in organizations has a strong contribution to the development of maturity models. Maturity models help organizations to define their organizational strategy. The lack of knowledge of these maturity models causes organizations to experience problems in the development and improvement of their project management processes.
In this dissertation, it was developed an analysis of the most relevant models of project management maturity by comparing them. The main objective of this dissertation is to adapt and apply a maturity model to assess the evolution of the maturity of project management practices in development teams in the academic environment.
Afterward the theoretical study of the different maturity models, it was applied the Prado Project Management Maturity Model. This simplified model assesses the performance and maturity to development teams in the IT area. The model is applied to the project teams of curricular subjects of Development of Computer Applications of the second academic year and Information Systems and Technologies Project of the fourth academic year of the Integrated Masters in Engineering and Management of Information Systems course at the University of Minho.
To achieve this goal, the methodology used was the Case Study because its purpose is to gather information about the real context that allows a greater and more detailed knowledge about the topic. The Case Study was developed through questionnaires answered by the project managers of the different teams.
Through the application of the model, it was possible to compare the maturity between the two curricular units and to verify the effectiveness of the learning methods and strategies, and results in project management competencies throughout the course. Observing that there is a significant evolution in maturity from the Information Systems and Technologies Project teams compared to Development of Computer Application teams.
Interface OpenSCENARIO for CARLA simulator using ROS control
The potential impact self-driving cars could have in our society's future inspired many researchers to switch their focus to further develop this technology. In the recent years its popularity and financing has increased substantially with startups and some major car companies getting involved. Regardless of this trend, the technology still faces many challenges ahead. The leading advances are based on machine learning techniques, which require training on a variety of situations in real-life or with large datasets. However, security liabilities and ethical questions prevent these vehicles from performing freely on the public roads, halting the development progress. Urban driving simulators present themselves as the solution, allowing to train ADSs in realistic and complex urban scenarios while reducing costs and without endangering human lives. Many urban driving simulators are available nowadays but all of them developed their own interface and APIs resulting in a largely non-standard industry. This thesis proposes the development of a communication layer for CARLA simulator providing a standard method to interface with the control algorithms. This implementation, although tuned specifically for this simulator, will allow full interaction with the simulator using only ROS and OpenScenario standard
The roman theatre of Bracara Augusta
This paper aims to present the main features of the roman theatre of Bracara Augusta identified in 1999. Although it is still under study, a significant set of evidence made it possible to present its characteristics, to value the socioeconomic issues related with its construction and to discuss the aspects related to the development of the NW Iberian Peninsula cities, where traditionally this type of equipment was believed to be absent, and to understand the diffusion of roman public architecture models in peripheral regions within the Western Empire
