Options for organization and operation of space applications transfer centers
The benefits of developing regional facilities for transfer of NASA developed technology are discussed. These centers are designed to inform, persuade, and serve users. Included will be equipment for applications and demonstrations of the processes, a library, training facilities, and meeting rooms. The staff will include experts in the various techniques, as well as personnel involved in finding and persuading potential users

Quasi-diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (QDI): A fast, high b-value diffusion imaging technique.
To enable application of non-Gaussian diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) techniques in large-scale clinical trials and facilitate translation to clinical practice there is a requirement for fast, high contrast, techniques that are sensitive to changes in tissue structure which provide diagnostic signatures at the early stages of disease. Here we describe a new way to compress the acquisition of multi-shell b-value diffusion data, Quasi-Diffusion MRI (QDI), which provides a probe of subvoxel tissue complexity using short acquisition times (1-4 min). We also describe a coherent framework for multi-directional diffusion gradient acquisition and data processing that allows computation of rotationally invariant quasi-diffusion tensor imaging (QDTI) maps. QDI is a quantitative technique that is based on a special case of the Continuous Time Random Walk model of diffusion dynamics and assumes the presence of non-Gaussian diffusion properties within tissue microstructure. QDI parameterises the diffusion signal attenuation according to the rate of decay (i.e. diffusion coefficient, D in mm2 s-1) and the shape of the power law tail (i.e. the fractional exponent, α). QDI provides analogous tissue contrast to Diffusional Kurtosis Imaging (DKI) by calculation of normalised entropy of the parameterised diffusion signal decay curve, Hn, but does so without the limitations of a maximum b-value. We show that QDI generates images with superior tissue contrast to conventional diffusion imaging within clinically acceptable acquisition times of between 84 and 228 s. We show that QDI provides clinically meaningful images in cerebral small vessel disease and brain tumour case studies. Our initial findings suggest that QDI may be added to routine conventional dMRI acquisitions allowing simple application in clinical trials and translation to the clinical arena
Prognosis of carotid dissecting aneurysms: Results from CADISS and a systematic review.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the natural history of dissecting aneurysm (DA) and whether DA is associated with an increased recurrent stroke risk and whether type of antithrombotic drugs (antiplatelets vs anticoagulants) modifies the persistence or development of DA. METHODS: We included 264 patients with extracranial cervical artery dissection (CAD) from the Cervical Artery Dissection in Stroke Study (CADISS), a multicenter prospective study that compared antiplatelet with anticoagulation therapy. Logistic regression was used to estimate age- and sex-adjusted odds ratios. We conducted a systematic review of published studies assessing the natural history of DA and stroke risk in patients with non-surgically-treated extracranial CAD with DA. RESULTS: In CADISS, DA was present in 24 of 264 patients at baseline. In 36 of 248 patients with follow-up neuroimaging at 3 months, 12 of the 24 baseline DAs persisted, and 24 new DA had developed. There was no association between treatment allocation (antiplatelets vs anticoagulants) and whether DA at baseline persisted at follow-up or whether new DA developed. During 12 months of follow-up, stroke occurred in 1 of 48 patients with DA and in 7 of 216 patients without DA (age- and sex-adjusted odds ratio 0.84; 95% confidence interval 0.10-7.31; p = 0.88). Published studies, mainly retrospective, showed a similarly low risk of stroke and no evidence of an increased stroke rate in patients with DA. CONCLUSIONS: The results of CADISS provide evidence suggesting that DAs may have benign prognosis and therefore medical treatment should be considered
LArPix: Demonstration of low-power 3D pixelated charge readout for liquid argon time projection chambers
We report the demonstration of a low-power pixelated readout system designed
for three-dimensional ionization charge detection and digital readout of liquid
argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). Unambiguous 3D charge readout was
achieved using a custom-designed system-on-a-chip ASIC (LArPix) to uniquely
instrument each pad in a pixelated array of charge-collection pads. The LArPix
ASIC, manufactured in 180 nm bulk CMOS, provides 32 channels of
charge-sensitive amplification with self-triggered digitization and multiplexed
readout at temperatures from 80 K to 300 K. Using an 832-channel LArPix-based
readout system with 3 mm spacing between pads, we demonstrated low-noise
(500 e RMS equivalent noise charge) and very low-power (100
W/channel) ionization signal detection and readout. The readout was used
to successfully measure the three-dimensional ionization distributions of
cosmic rays passing through a LArTPC, free from the ambiguities of existing
projective techniques. The system design relies on standard printed circuit
board manufacturing techniques, enabling scalable and low-cost production of
large-area readout systems using common commercial facilities. This
demonstration overcomes a critical technical obstacle for operation of LArTPCs
in high-occupancy environments, such as the near detector site of the Deep

Expression of HGF and c-met proteins in human keratoconus corneas
© 2015 Jingjing You et al. Keratoconus (KC) is a progressive degenerative inflammatory-related disease of the human cornea leading to decreased visual function. The pathogenesis of KC remains to be understood. Recent genetic studies indicate that gene variants of an inflammation-related molecule, hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), are associated with an increased susceptibility for developing KC. However HGF protein expression in KC has not been explored. In this initial study, we investigated late-stage KC and control corneas for the expression of HGF and its receptor mesenchymal-epithelial transition factor (c-Met/Met). KC buttons (8 mm diameter) (n = 10) and whole control corneas (n = 6) were fixed in 10% formalin or 2% paraformaldehyde, paraffin embedded and sectioned. Sections were immunolabelled with HGF and c-Met antibodies, visualised using immunofluorescence, and examined with scanning laser confocal microscopy. Semiquantitative grading was used to compare HGF and c-Met immunostaining in KC and control corneas. Overall, KC corneas showed increased HGF and c-Met immunostaining compared to controls. KC corneal epithelium displayed heterogeneous moderate-to-strong immunoreactivity for HGF and c-Met, particularly in the basal epithelium adjacent to the cone area. Taken together with the recent genetic studies, our results further support a possible role for HGF/c-Met in the pathogenesis of KC
The impact of realistic models of mass segregation on the event rate of extreme-mass ratio inspirals and cusp re-growth
One of the most interesting sources of gravitational waves (GWs) for LISA is
the inspiral of compact objects on to a massive black hole (MBH), commonly
referred to as an "extreme-mass ratio inspiral" (EMRI). The small object,
typically a stellar black hole (bh), emits significant amounts of GW along each
orbit in the detector bandwidth. The slowly, adiabatic inspiral of these
sources will allow us to map space-time around MBHs in detail, as well as to
test our current conception of gravitation in the strong regime. The event rate
of this kind of source has been addressed many times in the literature and the
numbers reported fluctuate by orders of magnitude. On the other hand, recent
observations of the Galactic center revealed a dearth of giant stars inside the
inner parsec relative to the numbers theoretically expected for a fully relaxed
stellar cusp. The possibility of unrelaxed nuclei (or, equivalently, with no or
only a very shallow cusp) adds substantial uncertainty to the estimates. Having
this timely question in mind, we run a significant number of direct-summation
body simulations with up to half a million particles to calibrate a much
faster orbit-averaged Fokker-Planck code. We then investigate the regime of
strong mass segregation (SMS) for models with two different stellar mass
components. We show that, under quite generic initial conditions, the time
required for the growth of a relaxed, mass segregated stellar cusp is shorter
than a Hubble time for MBHs with
(i.e. nuclei in the range of LISA). SMS has a significant impact boosting the
EMRI rates by a factor of for our fiducial models of Milky Way type

Serological evidence of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis in Switzerland
To investigate whether human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) is prevalent in Switzerland, 1515 human serum samples from individuals with different risks for tick exposure were tested for antibodies toEhrlichia phagocytophila, a surrogate marker of the agent of HGE. The distribution of titres showed marked differences between sera of individuals with no or low risk for tick exposure and those with a high risk. The results of serological testing provided evidence of HGE in Switzerland as well as evidence of two types of coinfections: those with the agent of HGE andBorrelia burgdorferi, and those with the agent of HGE and the central European tickborne encephalitis viru
RNA-Seq analysis and comparison of corneal epithelium in keratoconus and myopia patients

Keratoconus is a common degenerative corneal disease that can lead to significant visual morbidity, and both genetic and environmental factors have been implicated in its pathogenesis. We compared the transcriptome of keratoconus and control epithelium using RNA-Seq. Epithelial tissues were obtained prior to surgery from keratoconus and myopia control patients, undergoing collagen cross-linking and photorefractive keratectomy, respectively. We identified major differences in keratoconus linked to cell-cell communication, cell signalling and cellular metabolism. The genes associated with the Hedgehog, Wnt and Notch1 signaling pathways were down-regulated in keratoconus. We also identified plasmolipin and Notch1 as being significantly reduced in keratoconus for both gene and protein expression (p < 0.05). Plasmolipin is a novel protein identified in human corneal epithelium, and has been demonstrated to have a key role in epithelial cell differentiation in other tissues. This study shows altered gene and protein expression of these three proteins in keratoconus, and further studies are clearly warranted to confirm the functional role of these proteins in the pathogenesis of keratoconus

In the original version of this Article, a relevant paper on the detection of PLLP in human corneal epithelium during KC pathogenesis was not cited. This article is now cited as Ref 56 and discussed. As a result, in the Conclusion, "Notch1 and PLLP have not previously been linked to KC pathogenesis. PLLP has not been previously reported to be expressed in human corneal epithelium, although its roles in other tissues suggests it could play a critical role in normal corneal epithelial cellular activities, and interact with the Notch1 signaling pathway." now reads: "Notch1 has not previously been linked to KC pathogenesis. PLLP was reported to be upregulated in KC corneal epithelium compared to normal through proteomic analysis56.
