Boston-Halifax Ferry Service: Capturing an Existing Market
The viability of a Boston to Halifax ferry service is examined in light of the existing vehicle traffic entering that Province from the United States. The current cruise ship industry is outlined and the role which the Port of Boston plays in this market describes the Port\u27s incentive for instituting such a ferry service. Statistics provided by the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism show that a significant volume of vehicle traffic which enters Nova Scotia originates at points in the United States which are to the south and west of Boston. The existence of this traffic supports the assumption that such a ferry system is feasible
On the 1H NMR spectra of weak electrolytes under the influence of strong electrolytes at low concentrations
Physical chemistry has yet to provide a convincing explanation for the many distinct ways the cosolute's properties are perturbed when under the field of action of salt ions. For that reason, a systematic and gradual approach to the problem was sought, with the present work being a step in that direction. Thus, acetic acid and n-butylamine were selected as simple models for the charged carboxyl and amine groups in more complex solutes, like proteins. The influence of the gradual addition of inorganic salts on these compounds' proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra was analyzed. The salt concentration varied from 0.01 to roughly 100 mmol.L−1.
The reported results suggest that at a low salt concentration ( divalent > monovalent.
Therefore, the experimental facts herein reported show that the effect of salt ions at low concentrations upon the properties of other solutes can be rationalized by conventional chemical concepts, in which chemical equilibrium plays an important role. Furthermore, the results strongly support the classical interpretation of salt ions, which are charged bodies that, in solution, exert chiefly electrostatic forces.publishe
First record of the Mediterranean asteroid Sclerasterias richardi (Perrier in Milne-Edwards 1882) in the Azores Archipelago (NE Atlantic Ocean)
The first occurrence of the Mediterranean fissiparous asteroid Sclerasterias richardi (Perrier in Milne-Edwards 1882) is reported from the Azores based upon dredged material off the south coast of São Miguel Island at 135 m depth. This record represents a considerable expansion of the species’ geographic range, otherwise reported with certainty only from the Mediterranean Sea. S. richardi is capable of producing long-lived planktotrophic larvae with high dispersal potential to reach remote areas such as the Azores. Alternatively, this species is also capable of reproducing asexually through fission, which could insure the maintenance of viable numbers in a stranded population. The presence of S. richardi in Azorean waters and its rarity in an otherwise thoroughly investigated area does not necessarily imply a recent arrival nor a human-mediated introduction, as the depths in consideration (80-700 m) are also the least studied in the archipelago.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Impact of harvest residues, fertilisers and N-fixing plants on growth and nutritional status of young Eucalyptus globulus plantations under Mediterranean conditions
Growth and nutritional status of young plants
of Eucalyptus were assessed in a field trial, under different
scenarios of harvest residue management and nutrient
availability. Treatments were as follows: incorporation of
harvest residues into the soil by harrowing (I); I with N
fertiliser application (IF); I with leguminous, Lupinus
luteus L., seeding (IL); removal of harvest residues (R); R
with N fertiliser application (RF); R with leguminous
seeding (RL); distribution of harvest residues on the soil
surface (S); S with N fertiliser application (SF). Treatments
were replicated four times in four blocks with a fully
randomised design. Tree growth (height and diameter at
breast height) was measured and understory biomass
destructively recorded. Tree nutritional status was assessed
by foliar analysis (N, Ca, Mg, P, K and leaf area). Significant
differences in growth between I, R and S treatments
were only detected at early stage. Intercropping with
Lupinus decreased tree growth during the early phase, but
after 5 years growth was similar to that measured in the I
and R treatments. Application of fertiliser enhanced tree
growth especially when harvest residues were retained on
the soil surface. Combining incorporation of harvest residues
with fertiliser application (IF) was the best option to
increase tree growth, which was significantly greater than
in the R and S. Initially, leaf N was positively affected by
the leguminous (RL and IL), but, after the first fertiliser
application (1 year after planting), greater N was observed in the IF, RF and SF, the difference decreasing gradually
over the following year
Major studies regarding mapping and classification of soils in Cap Verde territory, published
between 1962 and 1987, are identified. Take into account these studies, the main soil physical
and chemical characteristics are highlighted, as well as their taxonomy and distribution. The
main deficiencies are described and actions to deepen its knowledge are identified. Finally,
crucial actions needed for a functional organization of the available information on Cape Verde
soils are outlined, considering territory management, agrarian development, natural resources
management and conservation and environmental quality

À semelhança do anterior,
Zacon Grou
