Physical chemistry has yet to provide a convincing explanation for the many distinct ways the cosolute's properties are perturbed when under the field of action of salt ions. For that reason, a systematic and gradual approach to the problem was sought, with the present work being a step in that direction. Thus, acetic acid and n-butylamine were selected as simple models for the charged carboxyl and amine groups in more complex solutes, like proteins. The influence of the gradual addition of inorganic salts on these compounds' proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra was analyzed. The salt concentration varied from 0.01 to roughly 100 mmol.L−1. The reported results suggest that at a low salt concentration ( divalent > monovalent. Therefore, the experimental facts herein reported show that the effect of salt ions at low concentrations upon the properties of other solutes can be rationalized by conventional chemical concepts, in which chemical equilibrium plays an important role. Furthermore, the results strongly support the classical interpretation of salt ions, which are charged bodies that, in solution, exert chiefly electrostatic forces.publishe

The work will be divided into three parts. The first theory, where reflections are made on the public space in the city as an element of the whole generator; the city as a system, based on the Urban Structuring study of the architects Alison and Peter Smithson; to sum up, the reflection of light and water elements which not only influenced, how were points of departure for formalizing plastic project. Then, in chapter Analyses, is made in macro scale a landscape study of the city of Lisbons addressing the morphological and territorial elements that constitute and define. In the last chapter Practice, is the culmination of the first two chapters in the development of a project for the construction of the Ateneu commercial of Lisbon, where a public program reborn as a urban knit artery, radically transforming the lives of not only the location but also the city.

Constraints on Dematerialisation and Allocation of Natural Capital along a Sustainable Growth Path

This paper extends the neoclassical growth model with natural capital by introducing two new concepts: allocation of natural capital and materialization. We consider that anthropogenic environmental impact is correlated with the throughput of the economy (materialisation). Materialisation is the material throughput per unit of economic activity. We capture the effect of the reduction of this throughput dematerialisation in the elasticities of materialisation and aggregate environmental impact. In our framework the fraction of natural capital devoted to production does not provide direct environmental services nor does it contribute to ecosystem functioning namely affecting the carrying capacity of natural capital. We analyse an optimal sustainable growth path, in the context of exogenous technological change. Our main conclusion is that the ratio of dematerialisation elasticities must equal the inverse of the share of natural capital in order to assure unbounded economic growth with constant natural capital

Three chapters in the history of femicide

This dissertation describes the genesis of the idea of femicide in a period of English and American Letters, the last decade of the eighteenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century, in which patriarchal values and constructions were entering a crisis which resulted in the revision of the idea of gender—in a way, that was the period in which the concept of gender was coded. In the first chapter, I look at the way the term femicide was first given currency in the English language in 1827 through Robert Macnish’s The Confessions of an Unexecuted Femicide, a fiction disguised as a true story, and how it spawned a short-lived literary sub-genre. In the second chapter, I examine Poe’s reworking of the femicide story, and to the ways in which he has drawn attention to its Gothic roots. Finally, in the third chapter, I offer a reading of Memoirs of the Author of ‘A Vindication of the Rights of Woman,’ in which I argue that Godwin’s “sentimentalised” portrait of Mary Wollstonecraft, and by extension of the female intellectual, constitutes an implicit refutation of her ideas, and therefore can be profitably compared to the portraits Poe’s femicide narrators make of Morella and Ligeia in the tales named after them.

Do founder-CEO firms outperform the market?

Research has been conducted that finds differences in firm performance according to the CEO status. This dissertation empirically examines founder-CEO firm’s performance. I use a sample of 96 listed US companies that are either founder or co-founder run to regress Fama and French’s (1992) independent variables SMB, HML, WML, RMW and CMA on equal-weighted and value-weighted excess returns using the OLS regression model. The results obtained are exciting and clarifying. Both portfolios produce very robust results and global statistical significance throughout. I find that the value-weighted and equal-weighted portfolios earn abnormal monthly returns ranging from 1.51% to 2.01%. This finding suggests there is a causal link between the existence of positive abnormal returns and founder-CEO firms and is of high importance for practitioners working in the finance industry
