    Logistics providers are developing competitive advantage by coordinating different customers logistics solutions. We are presenting some of the basic factors taken into consideration for a TPL firm when coordinating its customers. The possibilities to coordinate are dependent not only on activities of different customers, suppliers and customers´customers but also the attitudes and behavior reflected from their strategies. The dimensions of main importance for coordination are used as a base for finding suitable customer profiles. Finally we are discussing how the logistics providers effectively cope with the dynamic interaction and the network fit between customers.Customer coordination; Third party logistics providers (TPLs); Networks;

    In this thesis, we applied the ambient noise correlation method in the very heterogeneous region of the Pyrenees and the surrounding areas (mountain belt and thick sedimentary basins). The dataset used is a combination of two temporary broadband arrays from France and Spain (PYROPE and IBERARRAY) and stations of the French and Catalan permanent broadband arrays. Seismic noise recorded over years by the 158 stations was used to calculate correlations in a period range of 5-55 s. Observed Rayleigh and Love wave group velocities between pairs of stations were used as input to a linearized inversion scheme, where we obtained for each period group velocities maps, with a lateral resolution of approximately 40 km. The comparison between the two type of waves demonstrates radial anisotropy at short periods, while little or no radial anisotropy is present at long periods. We developed a new strategy for the inversion of dispersion curves to shear wave velocity models and applied it to the Rayleigh waves group velocity. This approach is based on the combination of a full exploration of the model space and a linearized inversion. The obtained model, validated by the comparison of our results with the results of other methods, is the first complete 3-D crustal Vs model of the region. We in particular note : (1) Atypical S-waves profiles in the Eastern part of the Massif Central which indicate a thinned crust and low velocities in the uppermost mantle. (2) High-velocity anomalies at 25 km depth beneath the Labourd-Mauléon area and the on-land continuation of the Parentis basin. We suggest that they are the traces of the hyper-extension which might have preceded the collision phase which lead to the formation of the Pyrenees. The strong heterogeneity of our study region is also well-adapted to analyze the influence of the ray deviations on the reconstruction of the model. First results show that the reconstructed model, using great-circle paths, does not explain the ray deviations as observed by beamforming. Observed deviations therefore carry the potential of improving the model in a combined inversion scheme.Durant cette thèse, nous appliquons la méthode de la corrélation de bruit ambiant dans la région particulièrement hétérogène des Pyrénées et des ses alentours (socle rocheux affleurant et bassin sédimentaires épais). Le jeu de données utilisé est une combinaison de deux réseaux temporaires large-bande français et espagnol (PYROPE et IBERARRAY) et de stations des réseaux permanents large-bande français et catalan. Le bruit sismique, enregistré pendant un an par les 158 stations est utilisé pour calculer les corrélations dans la gamme de période 5-55 s. Les vitesses de groupe de l'onde de Rayleigh et de l'onde de Love entre paires de stations sont inversées de manière linéarisée et nous obtenons, pour chaque période, des cartes de vitesses de groupe avec une résolution latérale d'environ 40 km. La comparaison entre les deux types d'ondes montre qu'il existe une anisotropie radiale à courtes périodes, alors que peu ou pas d'anisotropie radiale n'est visible aux périodes plus longues. Nous avons développé une nouvelle stratégie d'inversion des courbes de dispersion en modèle de vitesse d'onde S que nous avons appliqué sur les vitesses de groupe de l'onde de Rayleigh. Cette approche d'inversion est basée sur une exploration complète de l'espace des modèles et une inversion linéarisée. Le modèle obtenu, validé par la comparaison avec des résultats provenant d'autres méthodes, est le premier modèle 3-D crustale en vitesse d'onde S de la région et il permet d'apporter des contraintes sur la géodynamique des Pyrénées et de ses alentours. Deux points importants sont soulevés : (1) Des profils de vitesses atypiques sous l'Est du Massif Central, avec une croûte amincie et des vitesses anormalement faibles dans le manteau supérieur. (2) Deux anomalies de vitesses rapides sous la zone du Labourd-Mauléon et dans le prolongement du bassin de Parentis. Ces anomalies, situées à 25 km de profondeur, sont interprétées comme les traces de l'hyper-extension qui aurait précédée la phase de collision amenant à la formation des Pyrénées. La forte hétérogénéité de la zone permet également de faire l'analyse de l'influence de la non prise en compte des déviations de rais lors de l'inversion. Les premiers résultats montrent que le modèle obtenu en utilisant la théorie des rais droits ne permet pas d'expliquer les déviations calculées par la méthode de formation de voie. Ces déviations observées peuvent donc apporter une amélioration du modèle en considérant l'utilisation d'une inversion combinée

    An investigation into how strategic marketing is done in practice : insights towards components of more effective strategic marketing application.

    Thesis (MCom.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2005.This study seeks to engage in a discourse on the praxis of strategy and more specifically, marketing strategy. Within the confines of this study, an exploratory analysis is done looking at the difference between the theory and praxis of marketing, as motivated by concerns about the current emphasis and methodology in which marketing theory is taught and applied in practice. The findings of the study showed that the majority of practitioners working in senior strategic marketing positions had not received specific marketing training. This suggests that marketing, in the current degree structure, is not reaching its desired target market. Although there was an acknowledgement of the value of theory as a frame for thinking, the majority of practitioners spoke to the need for compromise between the ideal and the 'practical-implementable'; the need to augment the strategic theory with practical, tactical skills and a dualistic approach to the dissemination of the theory. This approach should work firstly, to master the theory and/or theoretical model as designed and written and secondly, to enable creative use of the model in different contexts. The practitioners further pointed to the need for marketing and accountancy as core subjects in the Bachelor of Commerce degree, explaining that both subjects provide a meaningful platform for understanding how business works. Practitioners expressed a lack of support for marketing in their organizations using ongoing internal education and feedback to massage a fundamental overhaul of current perceptions relating to the ineffectiveness of marketing. Practitioners suggested a lack of full utilization of marketing capacity explaining that their primary responsibility related to the promotion function only. Finally, they discussed the need for tools to assist in the management of marketing in a complex environment. In terms of practitioner responses to theoretical constructs, it was suggested that strategy developed for the organisation and for marketing specifically did not follow a linear, traditional format, but was more flexible and adaptive working inclusively and consultatively to develop core objectives and issues used as a working frame. In terms of the measurement of implementation success, most of them alluded to the use of feedback as a monitoring mechanism, talking further about the benefit of communication, internal marketing, teams, education and learning as drivers of successful implementation

    State of Flux: Rescuing Nelson's Waterfront

    No full text
    The neglected coastal edge of the port landscape has left behind unreceptive scars on the city’s urban fabric. These prominent locations are pivotal links between coastal towns and the sea; they are currently in very poor condition.¹ This thesis explores a site with these characteristics, Nelson, nestled between the Southern Alps at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. The compact and intimate geography of the Nelson region is surrounded by the ocean; with the city growing central to its port. Due to the once thriving local exports and industrial trade the port hastily expanded, the inevitable decline of the industrial era has resulted in a landscape of disregard which has distanced the city from the water. These neglected waterfront locations now taint the pristine image of the Nelson Haven. This thesis examines how a carefully considered architectural design can reintegrate this pivotal location back into the city’s urban fabric while reinforcing the relationship between the people of Nelson and the water. This design-led research utilises the sport of rowing with its link to the water as the catalyst to reconnect the people of Nelson to the waterfront and the water itself. This design-led thesis employs the ideologies of atmospheric experiences to materialise the importance of water to sense of place. This is achieved by exploiting the atmospheric experiences of material, space and time through an architectural dialogue with the water’s duality. The Nelson Haven experiences vast tidal movements which forms the foundations for the experience observed at the interface of architecture and water. This thesis further argues that this framework of architectural experience has the potential to serve as a catalyst project to rejuvenate and reintegrate the city of Nelson with its prime waterfront location. ¹ “Rutherford & Trafalgar Parks & Maitai Walkway” Nelson City Council. accessed July 15, 2015. http://nelson.govt.nz/assets/Leisure/Downloads/R-and-T-parks-redevelopment.pdf

    A model of population dynamics of TB in a prison system and application to South Africa

    Get PDF
    BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) continues to spread in South African prisons in particular, as prisons are over-capacitated and have poor ventilation. The awaiting trial detainees are not screened on admission and are at high risk of getting infected with TB. RESULTS: We propose a compartmental model to describe the population dynamics of TB disease in prisons. Our model considers the inflow of susceptible, exposed and TB infectives into the prison population. Removal of individuals out of the prison population can be either by death or by being released from prison, as compared to a general population in which removal is only by death. We describe conditions, including non-inflow of infectives into the prison, which will ensure that TB can be eradicated from the prison population. The model is calibrated for the South African prison system, by using data in existing literature. The model can be used to make quantitative projections of TB prevalence and to measure the effect of interventions. Illustrative simulations in this regard are presented. The model can be used for other prison populations too, if data is available to calculate the model parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Various simulations generated with our model serve to illustrate how it can be utilized in making future projections of the levels of prevalence of TB, and to quantify the effect of interventions such as screening, treatment or reduction of transmission parameter values through improved living conditions for inmates. This makes it particularly useful as there are various targets set by the World Health Organization and by governments, for reduction of TB prevalence and ultimately its eradication. Towards eradication of TB from a prison system, the theorem on global stability of the disease-free state is a useful indicator

    An Arabidopsis flavonoid transporter is required for anther dehiscence and pollen development

    Get PDF
    FLOWER FLAVONOID TRANSPORTER (FFT) encodes a multidrug and toxin efflux family transporter in Arabidopsis thaliana. FFT (AtDTX35) is highly transcribed in floral tissues, the transcript being localized to epidermal guard cells, including those of the anthers, stigma, siliques and nectaries. Mutant analysis demonstrates that the absence of FFT transcript affects flavonoid levels in the plant and that the altered flavonoid metabolism has wide-ranging consequences. Root growth, seed development and germination, and pollen development, release and viability are all affected. Spectrometry of mutant versus wild-type flowers shows altered levels of a glycosylated flavonol whereas anthocyanin seems unlikely to be the substrate as previously speculated. Thus, as well as adding FFT to the incompletely described flavonoid transport network, it is found that correct reproductive development in Arabidopsis is perturbed when this particular transporter is missing

    Examination of the suitability of collecting in event cognitive processes using Think Aloud protocol in golf

    Get PDF
    Two studies examined the use of Think Aloud (TA) protocol as a means for collecting data of cognitive processes during performance in golf. In Study 1, TA was employed to examine if different verbalisation (Level 2 or Level 3 TA) instructions influence performance of high and low skilled golfers. Participants performed 30 putts using TA at either Levels 2, 3, or no verbalization condition. Although Level 3 verbalization produced a higher volume of verbal data than Level 2, TA at either Level 2 or 3 did not impair putting performance compared to no verbalization. Study 2 examined the congruence between data collected via TA at Level 3 and cued retrospective recall of cognitive processes during golf performance. Experienced golfers performed six holes of golf whilst engaging in Level 3 TA. After performance, three semi-structured retrospective interviews were conducted (10 min after performance, 24 h after performance and 48 h after performance). A comparison of the themes identified large discrepancies between the information reported during TA and at interview, with only 38–41% similarity in variables reported to influence decision making on each hole. Both studies suggest TA is a valuable method for recording cognitive processes of individuals during task performance. TA provides richer verbal data regarding decisions than cued retrospective recall, and TA does not negatively impact performance
