    Dynamic characteristics and processing of fillers in polyurethane elastomers for vibration damping applications

    Polyurethane elastomers have the potential of being used to reduce vibrational noise in many engineering applications. The performance of the elastomer is directly related to matching the nature of the mechanical loss characteristics to the frequency and temperature dependence of the source of the vibration. Materials with a broad frequency response and good mechanical properties are desirable for situations were load bearing and isolation becomes an issue. Because automobile, and other related vehicles operate over a broad temperature range, it is desirable for the damping characteristics of the elastomer to ideally be independent of temperature and frequency. In practice, this is not possible and the creation of materials with a broad spectrum response is desirable. In this paper, the effects of various fillers on the breadth and temperature dependence of the vibration damping characteristics of a filled and crosslinked polyurethane elastomer are explored. The fillers studied are wollastonite, barium sulphate and talc. These materials have different shapes, sizes and surface chemistry and undergo different types of interaction with the matrix. The vibration damping characteristics were further varied by the use of a crosslinking agent. Data presented on the rheological characteristics indicate the strength of the filler-polyol interactions. Dielectric relaxation and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis demonstrate the way in which changes in the type of filler, concentration and amount of crosslinker lead to changes in the location and breadth of the energy dissipation process in these elastomers.     Actively stressed marginal networks

    We study the effects of motor-generated stresses in disordered three dimensional fiber networks using a combination of a mean-field, effective medium theory, scaling analysis and a computational model. We find that motor activity controls the elasticity in an anomalous fashion close to the point of marginal stability by coupling to critical network fluctuations. We also show that motor stresses can stabilize initially floppy networks, extending the range of critical behavior to a broad regime of network connectivities below the marginal point. Away from this regime, or at high stress, motors give rise to a linear increase in stiffness with stress. Finally, we demonstrate that our results are captured by a simple, constitutive scaling relation highlighting the important role of non-affine strain fluctuations as a susceptibility to motor stress.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    Influence of single-neutron stripping on near-barrier <sup>6</sup>He+<sup>208</sup>Pb and <sup>8</sup>He+<sup>208</sup>Pb elastic scattering

    The influence of single-neutron stripping on the near-barrier elastic scattering angular distributions for the 6,8He+208Pb systems is investigated through coupled reaction channels (CRC) calculations fitting recently published data to explore the differences in the absorptive potential found in the scattering of these two neutron-rich nuclei. The inclusion of the coupling reduces the elastic cross section in the Coulomb-nuclear interference region for 8He scattering, whereas for 6He its major impact is on the large-angle elastic scattering. The real and imaginary dynamic polarization potentials are obtained by inverting the CRC elastic scattering S-matrix elements. These show that the main absorptive features occur between 11 and 12 fm for both projectiles, while the attractive features are separated by about 1 fm, with their main structures occurring at 10.5 fm for 6He and 11.5 fm for 8He

    Spin 1 inversion: a Majorana tensor force for deuteron alpha scattering

    We demonstrate, for the first time, successful S-matrix to potential inversion for spin one projectiles with non-diagonal Sllâ€ČjS^j_{ll'} yielding a TRT_{\rm R} interaction. The method is a generalization of the iterative-perturbative, IP, method. We present a test case indicating the degree of uniqueness of the potential. The method is adapted, using established procedures, into direct observable to potential inversion, fitting σ\sigma, iT11{\rm i}T_{11}, T20T_{20}, T21T_{21} and T22T_{22} for d + alpha scattering over a range of energies near 10 MeV. The TRT_{\rm R} interaction which we find is very different from that proposed elsewhere, both real and imaginary parts being very different for odd and even parity channels.Comment: 7 pages Revtex, 4 ps figure

    Working for patient safety: a qualitative study of women's help-seeking during acute perinatal events.

    BACKGROUND: Women and their relatives can play an important role in early detection and help seeking for acute perinatal events. Recent UK reports indicate that patient-professional partnership in 'working for safety' can be difficult to achieve in practice, sometimes with catastrophic consequences. This research explored the experiences of women and relatives who had experienced early warning signs about their condition and sought help in escalating care. METHODS: Secondary analysis of case study data which included qualitative interviews with 22 women purposively sampled on account of experiencing a step up in care and 4 of their relatives from two NHS Trusts in England during 2010. Analysis focused on the type of safety work participants engaged in, and the opportunities and challenges reported by women and family members when negotiating safety at home and in hospital. RESULTS: Women and relatives took on a dual responsibility for self-diagnosis, self-care and seeking triage, whilst trying to avoid overburdening stretched services. Being informed, however, did not necessarily enable engagement from staff and services. The women's narratives highlighted the work that they engaged in to build a case for clinical attention, the negotiations that took place with health care professionals and the strategies women and partners drew on (such as objective signs and symptoms, use of verbal insistence and repetition) to secure clinical help. For some women, the events left them with a lasting feeling that their concerns had been disregarded. Some described a sense of betrayal and loss of trust in an institution they believed had failed to care for them. CONCLUSION: The notion of 'safety partnerships' which suggests a sense of equality and reciprocity was not borne out by our data, especially with regards to the experiences of teenage women. To enable women and families to secure a rapid response in clinical emergencies, strategies need to move beyond the provision of patient information about warning signs. Effective partnerships for safety may be supported by system level change such as improved triage, continuity of care, self-referral pathways and staff training to address asymmetries of power that persist within the health system

    BACKGROUND: One of the challenges for treating pre-eclampsia and preventing further deterioration is determining how best to enable early detection. If women or their partners and families are able to raise early warnings about potential signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia in pregnancy, birth and in the postnatal period, women may be able to receive earlier intervention to prevent severe pre-eclampsia from developing. The aim of this study was to improve understanding of factors affecting the ability of women to recognise symptoms and signs of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia and seek appropriate medical help and factors affecting health care professionals' responses to women and their families who 'speak up' about early warning signs and symptoms. METHODS: A narrative synthesis was conducted of evidence relevant to address the research question. The following electronic data bases were searched for qualitative studies which met inclusion criteria from January 1980 to April 2016; Medline, CINAHL, HMIC, PsycINFO, Embase, BNI, ASSIA, Scopus, Maternity and Infant Care, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Cochrane, JBI and IBSS with the support of an Information Service Consultant. RESULTS: Following thematic analysis, three themes were identified; 1: Women's understanding and knowledge of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia; 2: Factors affecting help seeking behaviour from perspectives of women and their families'; 3: Factors affecting staff response. There was widespread lack of knowledge and understanding of signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia among women and their families, with some women not exhibiting signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia or unable to distinguish them from 'normal' pregnancy changes. CONCLUSIONS: Women and their families not only need to be made aware of signs and symptoms of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia but also require information on the most effective ways to seek urgent medical assessment and care. Some women did not experience prodromal signs and symptoms, which raises concerns about how women and families can detect early onset, and is an issue which needs further exploration. There is very limited research exploring clinical staff response to women who raise concerns about their health when experiencing symptoms and signs of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia with further research needed if safety and quality of care are to be improved

    The mechanical response of semiflexible networks to localized perturbations

    Previous research on semiflexible polymers including cytoskeletal networks in cells has suggested the existence of distinct regimes of elastic response, in which the strain field is either uniform (affine) or non-uniform (non-affine) under external stress. Associated with these regimes, it has been further suggested that a new fundamental length scale emerges, which characterizes the scale for the crossover from non-affine to affine deformations. Here, we extend these studies by probing the response to localized forces and force dipoles. We show that the previously identified nonaffinity length [D.A. Head et al.     Tectonic-sedimentary evolution of the northern margin of Gondwana during Late Palaeozoic – Early Cenozoic time in the Eastern Mediterranean region: evidence from the Central Taurus Mountains, Turkey.

    The Taurus Mountains are an E-W trending mountain range in southern Turkey, with an elevation of up to 3500 m. In the south central Taurides, the Beysehir-Hoyran-Hadim nappes, a series of thrust sheets of Palaeozoic to Early Cenozoic age, are emplaced onto a relatively autochthonous Tauride platform, known as the Geyik Dag. These thrust sheets consist of a variety of discrete tectonostratigraphic units of continental platform, rifted margin and oceanic (ophiolitic) origin. It is generally accepted that the relatively autochthonous Tauride platform and the associated thrust sheets restore as a north-facing passive margin during Jurassic–Cretaceous time; however, the Triassic and earlier tectonic setting of the Tauride units is contentious. New data (mainly structural and sedimentological) presented here tests contrasting tectonic models of Late Palaeozoic – Early Mesozoic Tethys ocean evolution. Also, new light is shed on the Late Cretaceous and Early Cenozoic break-up and emplacement of the Tauride units during closure of Tethys. The Late Palaeozoic Tauride stratigraphy consists of shallow-marine carbonate, sandstone and mudstone, characteristic of a proximal passive margin. Detailed stratigraphic logging, facies interpretation, compositional analysis and geochemical evidence supports a passive margin setting, with sediment derived from the Tauride “basement”. Early – Middle Triassic mixed siliciclastic/carbonate sediments are interpreted as representing rifting and subsidence. Late Triassic coarser terrestrial clastics (Cayir Formation) are considered to represent a pulse of rift-related flexural uplift. Sediment provenance during this time was from the underlying Tauride platform to the north of the studied area. A previous hypothesis that a Palaeotethyan ocean closed in this area during latest Triassic “Cimmerian” orogenesis is discounted. Instead, structural and sedimentary data suggest that all of the deformation relates to Late Cretaceous – Early Cenozoic southward emplacement of the Beysehir-Hoyran-Hadim nappes. A first phase of thrusting (thin-skinned) emplaced ophiolite and distal margin units, whilst a second phase (thick-skinned) thrust platform lithologies southwards onto the foreland. Evidence is also summarised, notably from the Palaeozoic – Early Mesozoic Konya Complex to the north, which illustrates the relation of the Tauride platform to other geological terranes in Turkey and elsewhere in the Alpine-Himalayan orogenic belt.
