    Feasibility of Methyl Mercaptane as Probe Molecule for Supported Gold Nanoparticle Surface Area Determination

    Gold nanoparticles supported on TiO2 were probed by adsorption of methyl mercaptane (MM), and the process was quantified gravimetrically. This method allowed discrimination between weakly adsorbed (physisorbed) and strongly bound (chemisorbed) methyl mercaptane. Strong adsorption of MM occured on exposed Au faces, while low-temperature pre-treatment (30 °C) completely suppressed adsorption of MM on the TiO2 support. The thus obtained high selectivity of MM adsorption on Au enabled characterization of the gold surface area and the resulting values are comparable with other noble metal systems of similar average particle size. The estimated adsorption stoichiometry indicates that the entire Au surface is probed

    Compact molecular disc and ionized gas outflows within 350 pc of the active nucleus of Mrk 1066

    We present stellar and gaseous kinematics of the inner 350 pc radius of the Seyfert galaxy Mrk1066 derived from J and Kl bands data obtained with the Gemini NIFS at a spatial resolution of 35 pc. The stellar velocity field is dominated by rotation in the galaxy plane but shows an S-shape distortion along the galaxy minor axis which seems to be due to an oval structure seen in an optical continuum image. Along this oval, between 170 and 280 pc from the nucleus we find a partial ring of low sigma (~50 km/s) attributed to an intermediate age stellar population. Fro measurements of the emission-line fluxes and profiles ([PII]1.19um, [FeII]1.26um, Pa-beta and H2 2.12um), we have constructed maps for the gas centroid velocity, velocity dispersion, as well as channel maps. The velocity fields for all emission lines are dominated by a similar rotation pattern to that observed for the stars, but are distorted by the presence of two structures: (i) a compact rotating disc with radius r~70 pc; (ii) outflows along the radio jet which is oriented approximately along the galaxy major axis. The compact rotating disc is more conspicuous in the H2 emitting gas, which presents the smallest sigma values and most clear rotation pattern, supporting a location in the galaxy plane. We estimate a gas mass for the disc of ~10^7Msun. The H2 kinematics further suggests that the nuclear disc is being fed by gas coming from the outer regions. The outflow is more conspicuous in the [FeII] emitting gas, which presents the highest sigma values (up to 150 km/s) and the highest blue and redshifts of up to 500 km/s, while the highest stellar rotation velocity is only 130 km/s. We estimate a mass-outflow rate in ionized gas of 0.06 Msun/yr. The derived kinematics for the emitting gas is similar to that observed in previous studies supporting that the H2 is a tracer of the AGN feeding and the [FeII] of its feedback.Comment: Accepted by MNRAS; 18 pages; 15 figue

    Gender specific quality of life in patients with oral squamous cell carcinomas

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The goal of this study was to evaluate the somatic and psychological effects by means of QUALITY OF LIFE (QOL) of surgical treatment of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma. The factors gender, age, nicotine consumption, and tumour stage were taken into consideration.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>54 patients after surgical resection of oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) were analysed from 01.09.2005 to 31.05.2008. Inclusion criteria for the study were: age at least 18 years, no indication or treatment of synchronous and metachronous tumours.</p> <p>German translations of the EORTC H&N-35 and EORTC QLQ-C-30 questionnaires, as well as a general socioeconomic patient history were used as measuring instruments. The questionnaires were completed independently by the patients. The answers were translated into scale values for statistical evaluation using appropriate algorithms.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Analysis of the EORTC-QLQ-C-30 questionnaires demonstrated a tendency of more negative assessment of emotional function among the female participants, and a more negative evaluation of social function among the male participants. Greater tumour sizes showed significantly lower bodily function (p = 0.018). While a smaller tumour size was significantly associated with lower cognitive functioning (p = 0.031). Other cofactors such as age, nicotine consumption, and tumour stage only showed a tendency to influence the quality of sleep and daily life.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The data obtained within this investigation demonstrated that gender had the most significant power on the subjectively perceived postoperative quality of life. This factor is important e.g. in preoperative decision making regarding immediate microvascular reconstruction after e.g. mandibular resection and therefore QOL assessment should become integral component of the care of patients with OSCC.</p

    NUScon: a community-driven platform for quantitative evaluation of nonuniform sampling in NMR

    Although the concepts of nonuniform sampling (NUS) and non-Fourier spectral reconstruction in multidimensional NMR began to emerge 4 decades ago (Bodenhausen and Ernst, 1981; Barna and Laue, 1987), it is only relatively recently that NUS has become more commonplace. Advantages of NUS include the ability to tailor experiments to reduce data collection time and to improve spectral quality, whether through detection of closely spaced peaks (i.e., “resolution”) or peaks of weak intensity (i.e., “sensitivity”). Wider adoption of these methods is the result of improvements in computational performance, a growing abundance and flexibility of software, support from NMR spectrometer vendors, and the increased data sampling demands imposed by higher magnetic fields. However, the identification of best practices still remains a significant and unmet challenge. Unlike the discrete Fourier transform, non-Fourier methods used to reconstruct spectra from NUS data are nonlinear, depend on the complexity and nature of the signals, and lack quantitative or formal theory describing their performance. Seemingly subtle algorithmic differences may lead to significant variabilities in spectral qualities and artifacts. A community-based critical assessment of NUS challenge problems has been initiated, called the “Nonuniform Sampling Contest” (NUScon), with the objective of determining best practices for processing and analyzing NUS experiments. We address this objective by constructing challenges from NMR experiments that we inject with synthetic signals, and we process these challenges using workflows submitted by the community. In the initial rounds of NUScon our aim is to establish objective criteria for evaluating the quality of spectral reconstructions. We present here a software package for performing the quantitative analyses, and we present the results from the first two rounds of NUScon. We discuss the challenges that remain and present a roadmap for continued community-driven development with the ultimate aim of providing best practices in this rapidly evolving field. The NUScon software package and all data from evaluating the challenge problems are hosted on the NMRbox platform

    The classification of Information and Communication Technology Investment in Financial Accounting

    Financial accounting is well known in its responsibility for book keeping the organisational expenditure and the preparation of the financial statements. ICT investment has become important to investors and not reporting these investments on financial statement leads to misevaluation of the organisation market value. Moreover, the misclassification of ICT investment has been indicated, yet not investigated in the past researches. The unreported ICT investment and the misclassification of ICT investment could affect the measurement of ICT investment at firm level. By analysing the content of the financial statement for 86 firms listing in Australian Stock Exchange, this study explains how ICT investments were being classified with the other investment in financial reports from 2006 to 2010. Differentiating between ICT asset and expense is an initial step into the understanding about the classification of ICT investment in financial accounting. The accounting standards requires the capitalisation conditions including future economic benefit, controllability, identifiability, existence, and reliability measurement to be justified for the expenditure before it can be capitalised as asset. The study use fuzzy set qualitative and comparative analysis (fsQCA) to analyse the information collected from the experts in the accounting fields. Base on fsQCA analysis, the study is able to shows that the factors considered by the organisation to differentiate ICT asset from ICT expense is beyond the requirement in definition of asset stated in the International Accounting Standards and the Australian Accounting Standards

    Electrical energy storage resources (ESRs) oer a promising solution to many of the issues facing the electric grid. In order for this promise to be fully realized,new intelligent decision-making technologies are required. This dissertation studies the operation and valuation of ESRs in an uncertain electric grid environment.ESRs can include both stationary battery energy storage systems (BESSs) and distributed deferrable loads such as plug-in electric vehicles (EVs). An ESR can be operated to provide multiple services simultaneously, maximizingits value. An EV can provide transportation services as well as participate in electric grid frequency regulation. A BESS can also provide frequency regulation while providing load peak shifting. In this thesis, we propose new andinnovative solutions that enable optimal operation and accurate valuation of multi-function ESRs under uncertainty. New Markov decision problems (MDPs) for smart charging of EVs are developed for cases of price, ancillary services, anddriver behavior uncertainty. In order to compare the proposed MDP approaches with deterministic optimization approaches, a Dynamic Monitoring and DecisionSystems (DYMONDS) energy market simulation is developed. We also propose an innite horizon MDP approach to estimating the net present value of a BESSthat degrades over time. In order to optimize the economic scheduling of an ESR that provides frequency regulation service, one needs a predictive model of theautomatic generation control (AGC) signal. We investigate timeseries and other statistical models for the prediction of an AGC signal and its cumulative effect on the state of charge of an ESR.<br
